Do you let your dog upstairs?

I have an 8 month old golden retriever puppy who is just amazing but bloody huge at nearly 30kg already. But I also have a 4 year old cat who is completely blind (and we think has been pretty much since kittenhood).

The cat and the dogs get on absolutely fine and up until now he hasn't been allowed upstairs as I've kept that as a sort of safe haven for the cats.. But I'm starting to feel a bit mean...

He has a nice bed and is allowed on the sofa etc.

So wondering if you let yours roam or if upstairs is a no no?

Not only is our dog not allowed upstairs but also not allowed on the sofas.

DieCryHate · 16/04/2019 18:04

Fellow goldie owner here and he's not allowed upstairs. He has commandeered a sofa of his own though.

He is allowed upstairs and sleeps in the hallway. He never goes into bedrooms. He's a labrador, the casting and moulting is horrendous so glad we kept him out of bedrooms, in hindsight wish we'd kept him downstairs.

It is not mean if he's comfy downstairs and he'll know no different, the other dogs won't let on they get upstairs.

pigsDOfly · 16/04/2019 18:15

My dog is pretty small 6.5 kilo and yes I do allow her upstairs but I'm not sure I would if she were a big dog.

She usually starts off the night on my bed, and at some point goes back downstairs, but I always make sure her paws are clean and there are no small creatures caught in her long tummy hair before we go to bed.

Please don't read anything my Cesar Milan OP. His ideas are nonsense and his treatment of dogs is cruel. Horrible man.

Chloemol · 16/04/2019 18:23

Mines allowed anywhere I am, and no doubt much to the horror of many on her sleeps down my bed. However if I had a animal here before her and she was as your cat is I would not allow her upstairs. My sister also has a dog, she is not allowed upstairs and as she has been trained like this since a puppy is not bothered

HarrysOwl · 16/04/2019 18:25

No. Not allowed on sofas or upstairs.

Parker231 · 16/04/2019 18:31

Cat and dog are allowed everywhere. Cat sleeps on our bed and the dog sleeps on the landing on the top floor to ‘guard ‘ DS and DD’s bedrooms. They are both at Uni but she still sleeps on their floor of the house.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 16/04/2019 18:33

No. He isn't allowed in the kitchen either as that is where the cats' food is.

On holiday he discovered stairs and waking up the kids with a wet nose to the face, but he hasn't bothered since we have been home

bengalcat · 16/04/2019 18:33

Yes my 22kg whippador sleeps on the bed but she usually curls into a ball - she rests on the pillows at other times but at night the cats usually there and in this household pussy rules

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 16/04/2019 18:43

I have two collies who sleep either on, under or next to the bed - they change positions frequently through the night. It feels entirely normal to us, we're a family group and family groups sleep together.

I don't understand how dogs can let people know if they're ill or need outside when they're sleeping downstairs?

Seymoursyourfriend · 16/04/2019 18:47

No. Dogs don't need to be upstairs. They have everything they need downstairs.

LakieLady · 16/04/2019 18:48

Mine is allowed wherever she likes and will snuggle up on the bed on cold nights. She's small, and doesn't moult, so we don't get hairy bedding.

She shares the sofa with me, too, unless it's very cold. Then she goes and lies on DP, as he emits more heat.

BettyJune07 · 16/04/2019 18:52

Our lab is allowed upstairs with us and will wander up there but doesn't sleep upstairs. At night he has two beds downstairs and the sofa. If he comes up in the day its normally because the DC have taught him how to get a drink from the bathroom tap so he will have a drink then lie on the landing. I don't think its cruel, he has 3 beds essentially, I have one Grin

starabara · 16/04/2019 19:00

No. We live in a bungalow but they don’t come past the middle door from reception areas to bedrooms, except if a child needs company after a nightmare when I’ll send an older dog through for a few hours.

I have five large breed short coated dogs. I need some canine free space!

Squigglesworth · 16/04/2019 19:10

We don't have an upstairs, but most of the time the dogs are allowed in the bedrooms and on the bed-- though we do shut them out of the bedroom at night (except for the new, young puppy, whose crate is in our room). We don't have cats, so that's not a consideration.

Our dogs are not a smelly breed, but they do shed and occasionally bring sandy dirt, leaves, etc. onto the bedspread. I gripe a little when they make a mess, but honestly, most of the time I enjoy having them there for snuggles before bed.

Squigglesworth · 16/04/2019 19:14

Forgot to add that our dogs have no problem letting us know if they need to go out in the night. A good bark or two does the trick. Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 16/04/2019 19:21

We do. I work from home and my office is upstairs, it'd be strange to leave him downstairs alone. But he's a short haired dachshund - I might feel differently if he was large and/or hairy.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/04/2019 19:22

He sleeps downstairs in the utility room at night though.

Mydollymolly · 16/04/2019 19:41

I don't allow mine in the house, let alone upstairs.

adaline · 16/04/2019 19:43

Yep - but only at night to go to bed. I wouldn't leave him up there unsupervised as there's too much to chew!

teacakes44 · 16/04/2019 21:12

Our bearded collie loves our bed & I love him sleeping with us. He is far too big for the bed really but couldn’t imagine it any other way. I love listening to his contented snores & as I’m often awake in the night I just find it comforting that he’s there. He gets really mardy when I change the bed & he can’t get on it. He throws himself around the floor making humph noises through his nose. Silly bugger but he’s adorable.
