People giving their email at tills

Went in three shops today which asked me for my email address. Not directly but....
‘Would you like a 10% off voucher emailed to you’
‘Have we got your details on our product registry’
‘Are you on our system’

I just say no thanks.

AIBU to be surprised how many people just gave their email address? They don’t know anything about what it would be used for, weather it would be sold on, would they receive spam, are the company GDPR compliant, do they have enough security to prevent hacking of your information etc.

Of course you can always unsubscribe but it may have been sold on by then.

An emailed receipt might be handy but surely at the end of the day they are just after your contact details to sell you more stuff?

Yabu a little bit. People can say no thanks if they want. Or people like me don’t care.

I agree with you OP and always refuse, it’s so unnecessary! And makes a simple transaction longer than it needs to be. Lose lose.

Just the same as having a reward card/clubcard

Lets think about this - you've put your debit/credit card in a chip and PIN and you're worried about your disposable email address. Ok then.

I give my email address for an e-receipt.
I have a separate email address specifically for this purpose. I fully expect it to be sold on, but actually it hasn't been yet and I've been using it like this for about 5 years. Literally the only emails I ever get on that address are from the companies I've given it to.

I do think a lot of people are scared of giving offence or of being and odd one out, or of somehow being 'wrong' and so give the details because they think it would be too awkward not to. I don't give a toss, so I just say no thanks. But I can totally understand how some people don't feel able to do that.

I love it. I much prefer an e-receipt; I’m not likely to lose it then and I’m not faffing about with bits of paper. It also means I get special offers from shops I’m interested in.

They’re not forcing people to give their email address and it is easy to decline. A polite no thank you works every time in my experience. Some people like to get an e-receipt so they don’t lose it and can easily pull it up on their phone or get discounts if they shop at a place often enough. Also, you can unsubscribe. When you surf the net, do you worry about advertisements popping up on other sites because you visited them beforehand? How is giving an email at a shop much different?

YANBU. It’s annoying. It takes time and it’s intrusive.

I do have a 'spare' email address for this, that I give to Argos, Homebase, New Look, Next etc.............

I get a bit more annoyed by being asked for my postcode to be honest. And I always give one about half a mile away.........

But yes, it is bloody annoying... which is why I have a throw away email for it. That way I don't miss any offers I may actually be interested in, but don't get my personal email full of crap!

I don’t mind if they ask if I’d like to give my email, but recently I was in the body shop and after I’d paid the cashier said ‘and what’s your email address?’ - no asking if she could have it, no telling me what it was for, just straight in! She looked very put out that I said no..

Went to topshop last week and she wanted my email for an email receipt. I asked for a paper one and she said you get both. What's the point then? Not to save paper is it (I know some places it is)! I said I'd just like paper and she kept trying to convince me, saying it will just take a minute and it's much easier and I will still get a paper receipt until I said never mind and walked off!

Many shops don't use the information except for sending an e-receipt. I give my email address every time I buy something from Argos for example. I have never had an email from Argos about anything other than a receipt - and as far as I can tell I don't get e-mails from anyone else because I gave Argos my email address either.

This bugs me because of the extra time it takes at the till. I just say I haven't got an email address!

I just say no thanks. I dont care how out of date this makes me appear. There are some advantages to being an old fuddy-duddy.

I hate it too. I don't get this modern culture of wanting to be inundated by advertising! When I want to buy something I'll investigate it. I do have throwaway email addresses, but who has the time to be constantly checking through crap?

What info is being hacked or sold on? My dress size? Literally all they have is your email, not a phone number, not a name, not an address. Dodgy companies could buy a simple piece of software to scan the internet and harvest email addresses without paying for a list which people here have already admitted are disposable.
