People giving their email at tills

Northernlass99 · 14/04/2019 15:44

Went in three shops today which asked me for my email address. Not directly but....
‘Would you like a 10% off voucher emailed to you’
‘Have we got your details on our product registry’
‘Are you on our system’

I just say no thanks.

AIBU to be surprised how many people just gave their email address? They don’t know anything about what it would be used for, weather it would be sold on, would they receive spam, are the company GDPR compliant, do they have enough security to prevent hacking of your information etc.

Of course you can always unsubscribe but it may have been sold on by then.

An emailed receipt might be handy but surely at the end of the day they are just after your contact details to sell you more stuff?

No problem.

But do consumers always check when buying over the phone that the assistant has keyed their card details into the system or whether they are writing them down? That’s a bigger worry and I have had three thefts, all very small like someone using my card details to pay for a £9 item or so, that have been linked back to a retailer.

M4J4 · 14/04/2019 17:33

I have four email addresses, i give out my junk mail address to the till, it’s handy to have an email receipt.

BarbaraofSevillle · 14/04/2019 17:36

I like the idea of email receipts as in you don't end up with a pile of paper receipts and they are easy to search through, but giving an email address verbally and accurately is a pain in the arse, plus you just know they'll spam you to death once they have your email address as they've clearly found some way round the GDPR rules as I ignored all those 'please let us keep emailing you' emails and they've all started up again.

JemSynergy · 14/04/2019 17:45

I always say no. I went into Holland and Barrett and they asked for my postcode at the till. I just said no as I didn't want the whole of the shop knowing my home address.

Roussette · 14/04/2019 17:50

@JPK1510

It’s not a marketing ploy as they can’t send you marketing emails without your consent. Which you can say no to but still have a paper receipt. It’s people like you who we all hate serving it’s not personal we don’t want your email I don’t want to know your name I don’t care I’m just doing my job

Why then, when I bought a shirt for my husband from Charles Tyrwhitt seconds shop and they asked for my email address and I stupidly gave it and then I get loads of emails with offers from them? So I disagree. I learnt from that and never give out my email address. Of course I know it's not personal! I'm never rude. I just say No, I don't want to give you my email address

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/04/2019 17:55

Retailers do not have a right to ask for personal contact information Of course they do!

And you have the right to say no!

If you get an email with offers just opt out, 1 click and they are gone! But you still get to have that receipt in an email that you don't use for much else! Easy to find if you ever need it!

GoldenPineapples · 14/04/2019 17:58

If you shop online you give them your email address so what's the difference?

It's an email, not someone coming to your door asking to come in for a cup of tea.

Roussette · 14/04/2019 18:00

Because you can end up with absolute streams of marketing emails. In amongst those might be something very important but the 20 a day of absolute crap just gets in the way. That's why AFAIC

Roussette · 14/04/2019 18:02

Opting out can take weeks or months to actually take effect. I prefer paper receipts. If electrical goods, they are stapled to the handbook, or I have files for different ones. Easy peasy. Never lost a paper receipt yet. The thought of wading through streams of emails to find a receipt is not appealing for me.

TwistinMyMelon · 14/04/2019 18:02

I hate it when they offer to email your receipt to you. Paper copy is fine thanks. I spend half my life deleting spam shite from my personal email (don't get me started on work emails, I often wish there was an unsubscribe button for most of the people who email me)

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/04/2019 18:02

You can opt out of the marketing emails the first time you get one. Single click and they are gone!

I've just gone through my 'real' email account - now the Rollup no longers works, and have zubbed 30 years worth of accidental and incidental 'memberships' of all sorts of weird stuff. Apart from being interesting to see how my interests have changed over the years, it wasn't all that difficult. Just choose a letter of the alphabet and have at it Smile

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/04/2019 18:04

Opting out can take weeks or months to actually take effect. No! Really? It should take a day or so at most! It's bloody automated, so the next time their system updates it should delete you - and that should be daily!

In your case ROussette I'd probably also find it amusing to have at them with the GDPR stick Grin

ohmydaysagain · 14/04/2019 18:06

I have a separate email address for shopping and sign up stuff andantes different one for account and private stuff. It's easier that way for me and I don't care who has the crappy one

Roussette · 14/04/2019 18:15

But Curious even when you press the unsubscribe button, it can say it will take up to 28 days, or it wants a reason, or you have to tick loads of boxes to make sure you are unsubscribing from everything.

I am just unsubscribing from an airport parking co we used once. No I did not agree to emails at the time but had to give my email address to get the parking voucher. Here is everything I have to tick, untick or answer. A f**king nightmare!

Are you sure you no longer to receive exclusive discounted deals?
or how about updating your preference to receive fewer emails ?

Northernlass99 · 14/04/2019 18:24

Why give an email address that you never check, why not just say no?

OP posts:
CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/04/2019 18:27

That's a bloody nightmare! And really does flaunt the GDPR regs!

Bastards!

Roussette · 14/04/2019 18:30

Curious Grin Grin

Littlebelina · 14/04/2019 18:32

I don't mind except ( like Reastie said) they phrase it as if it's not optional mountain warehouse. I usually just say no unless it's a big ticket item at which point I'll give my Hotmail which is spammed to buggery anyway.

Purpleartichoke · 14/04/2019 18:34

I keep an email just for shopping. I only check it when I want to look for a coupon.

floribunda18 · 14/04/2019 18:34

I don't mind if I'm likely to want to know when their sales are or other special offers. I just unsubcribe if it isn't interesting.

Sparklingbrook · 14/04/2019 18:37

I don't mind at all. Email receipts are good-less paper use.

I just unsubscribe from the emails if I don't want them. No drama.

puppy23 · 14/04/2019 18:42

The staff must find it so tedious, especially the extra time it takes when they've already got a big queue building up

ARDuke · 14/04/2019 18:49

It's annoying but you just need to say no. Don't have a go at the staff on the till though because they get no say in the matter, they basically need to get a set % of emails out of all their customers every day or they get shouted at by management.

Purplehammer · 14/04/2019 18:57

I went to Pets at home to buy some tropical fish.
Was told by assistant unless I gave my email they wouldn’t process the purchase at the till.
I left without the fish.
Ridiculous.

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/04/2019 19:03

I gave mine to Halfords as the part I was buying had a three year warranty and I knew I would lose the receipt, so having one emailed was good, especially as the part failed less than a year later!

But everyone else gets told no thanks. The woman at TKMaxx seems to take it as a personal affront when I say no, "Oh but itll only take a minute" and I always reply with "I'm not bothered how long it takes, I dont want you having my personal information" and she invariably looks like I just shit in her slippers. I can only assume that they are given targets of the amount of information they can gather. They used to ask for postcode and house number and got told to bog off with that one too.

I am also surprised at the number of people who just hand this information over.
