People giving their email at tills

Went in three shops today which asked me for my email address. Not directly but....
‘Would you like a 10% off voucher emailed to you’
‘Have we got your details on our product registry’
‘Are you on our system’

I just say no thanks.

AIBU to be surprised how many people just gave their email address? They don’t know anything about what it would be used for, weather it would be sold on, would they receive spam, are the company GDPR compliant, do they have enough security to prevent hacking of your information etc.

Of course you can always unsubscribe but it may have been sold on by then.

An emailed receipt might be handy but surely at the end of the day they are just after your contact details to sell you more stuff?

I've changed my mind on this. It felt intrusive to me and that the shop just wanted to bombard you with promotional stuff but listening to BBC news this morning I hadn't thought about the paperless benefits. So I think I will give mine from now on.

I'm Irish in Ireland which is actually worse than being Irish in the UK for email purposes. At least in the UK I can spell it out and they accept my spelling, in Ireland most people think they know how to spell my name so don't listen to me spelling it out for them and get it wrong because I have a non-standard spelling. Even if I write it down, they transfer it wrongly.

The reason they want your email address is absolutely to build a database and spam their customers to get them to try and spend more money with them. Why wouldn’t they want that when so many high street names are failing? With GDPR, they are meant to tell you exactly what they want your email for and what they will do with it.

In my work, we first have to ask if the customer would like their receipt emailed (they can have paper copy too if they want) If they say yes, we type the email and then we have to ask if they’d like to receive marketing emails from us. To which most people say no or that they already get our emails. This is an opt-in tick box so there is no accidental opting in, they just get their emailed receipt which can be really useful if buying electronics or anything with a warranty. We also have targets to meet and I can honestly say I have never met my target and am made to feel shit at my job by upper management because of this

Not uncommon to have an email address just for spam. I'm more bothered about giving my postcode.

DianaT1969 · 16/04/2019 14:44

Holland & Barrett. The goods in my hand go out of date while I queue. Who in the marketing team decided it's a good idea to keep the queue waiting while the single person at the till takes name, email and postal address for a loyalty card? Avoid avoid.

I've noticed some shops ask for your email to email you the receipt but then they send you marketing. Pretty sure this is not GDPR compliant as you haven't consented to that. Also they say it in a way that makes it sounds like you can't get a receipt unless you give them your email. What you need to do is say 'can I just have a paper receipt please'. That's what I do now so no more spam. I don't like being tempted to buy more crap all the time.

goingonabearhunt1 · 16/04/2019 17:16

I just think it's dodgy that they're not clear about what they're doing with it. It annoys me.

twosoups1972 · 16/04/2019 17:16

I get a bit more annoyed by being asked for my postcode to be honest. And I always give one about half a mile away

I once gave the postcode of the shop I was in. That confused them Grin

@Sarcelle there is no deadline for getting consent under GDPR

I've noticed some shops ask for your email to email you the receipt but then they send you marketing. Pretty sure this is not GDPR compliant as you haven't consented to that. You haven't said no at that point either.

Calling/emailing on the off chance is not banned under GDPR, as many people seem to think. Continuing contact once consent has been withdrawn, Unsubscribe selected is the behaviour that falls foul of GDPR.
