To think Surrey is the most boring place on earth?

DSis has moved there recently with her two kids, so they can get a dog and have more of a villagey feel.
I visited and my lord was it dull.

The people I met were all the same. All of them commuted into the city. Law or Finance, take your pick. They all dressed in the same country-esque garb, thinking they were in the deep English countryside. (No Veronica put down countrylife, you live in Surrey). Probably went to Oxbridge.

It seems to be very tory, all very much competing with each other. Keeping up with the Joneses whilst thinking secretly they’re too good for their 4 bed semi worth £1mil.

They all talk about Surrey a lot, too.

I've never come across that geographical self-obsession anywhere else.

Sinead100 · 06/04/2019 09:30

Yep. (And I dont live in Surrey).

SuperMoonIsKeepingMeUpToo · 06/04/2019 09:31

I live in Surrey and I can assure you I'm nothing like that.

ForalltheSaints · 06/04/2019 09:33

Some of them voted in Chris Grayling and others Michael Gove. You have my sympathy

emmaluvseeyore · 06/04/2019 09:34

I also live in Surrey (and have grown up here) and I’m not anything like that. I don’t personally know anyone like that.

Home77 · 06/04/2019 09:34

My friend lives their and her MP is Michael Gove.

Home77 · 06/04/2019 09:34

oops, there

SoupDragon · 06/04/2019 09:34

Perhaps the problem is you rather than the whole of one county?

OhamIreally · 06/04/2019 09:35

Lived in Surrey when I was younger. Dullsville.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 06/04/2019 09:36

You haven't been to Staines, Woking or Camberley have you... Smile

There are lots of areas in the country which have this feel. It's always smaller towns and villages near a bigger city.

OhTheDramz · 06/04/2019 09:38

It’s a massive county, do you mean all of it is like that (but yes, all the MPs are Tory!)?

Dljlr · 06/04/2019 09:40

Come to Margate. There's no one like that 'ere.

Cranky17 · 06/04/2019 09:43

Don’t forget addlestone and Chertsey, they are Charmingly placing. I particularly like the bouncers in Staines McDonald’s on a Sunday afternoon and Woking town centre is a joy on a Friday night.

Cornettoninja · 06/04/2019 09:43

Amen to this. I’ve been living in one for a few years and it’s dire. People rave about it to each other but in truth it’s a dull, overpriced, little town with a severe lack of resources (schools, doctors, transport links (not going to London) amenities etc.) and is in fact just a massive housing estate with the odd pretty bit. Galls me to live in a supposedly ‘green’ place yet have to get in a car to enjoy any of it. When I lived in a city access to woods, fields and large parks was much easier.

I presume they have to talk up the hype to keep the house prices going.

BossAssBitch · 06/04/2019 09:52

Every county has it’s boring parts. I live in the Surrey Hills, it’s definitely not boring here, it’s absolutely beautiful, so wonderful that it was designated an AONB, Surrey is England's most wooded county, so I think I can safely say I live in the countryside Grin we have wonderful neighbours and real sense of community, I don’t know anyone who ‘keeps up with the joneses’.

As a family we go horse riding, mountain biking, running in the forest, go for lovely walks with the dogs to our many gorgeous country pubs, there is so much to do and it’s never ‘boring’.

I do work in finance in the city though Grin

Which county do you live in?

bricklanebagel · 06/04/2019 09:56

I live in Hampstead, so we have all the green space you need!Grin

I used to live in Hampstead... it’s not quite the same, OP Grin

RandomMess · 06/04/2019 10:00

@Cranky17 you beat me too it Grin

Surrey covers a large and diverse area...

I always say "I'm from Surrey but not the nice green leafy bit"

bricklanebagel · 06/04/2019 10:02

Well maybe I am being U in thinking all of Surrey is the same! Probably being influenced by a horribly snooty girl I had to live with at college from surrey.

Hampstead is horribly dull, IMO. A bit like Surrey. Just with better shops.

Alsohuman · 06/04/2019 10:04

Too much traffic, too many people, too manicured.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 06/04/2019 10:04

I live in Surrey, some parts are much nicer than others and I have a giggle at some of the "types" that take living in Surrey so seriously. My mum is not a native, she hates it here and finds it unfriendly, but I grew up here and I'm more used to it, I suppose.

I live in the London end but there's real variety through the county. It's not the real country side though, people who think Surrey is proper country are a bit deluded.

Chickydoo · 06/04/2019 10:05

Beautiful villages like Chiddingfold and Shere. Historic towns like Guildford & Dorking. Lots of shopping in Kingston on Thames.
Chessington world of Adventures, Thorpe park. Great Theatres in Woking & Guildford. Hampton court Palace (2 minutes walk from cosmopolitan Bridge road in Molesey)
Amazing schools. Tiffin for state, as for Independent schools, RGS,KGS,Hampton,Surbiton High, LEH,Reed's etc etc
Beautiful Newlands Corner, the South Downs. National trust Properties such as Claremont Gardens. Fabulous painshill Park with the gorgeous Santa's Crystal Grotto at Christmas.
30 mins to Waterloo from Woking, 20 mins from Surbiton. So London attractions and Theatres really accessible. 45 mins to the coast.
and sitting between Heathrow and Gatwick, so no more than than 35 minutes & you can be off to sunnier places. Although Surrey is actually quite warm and Sunny compared to the North of the country.
Just a few observations, people can be quite narrow minded without seeing the whole picture

RandomMess · 06/04/2019 10:05

Go to NW Surrey, it's erm "interesting".

It's increasingly more like an outer London suburb but with utterly shit/non-existent public transport. The poverty is awful living next to people with so much.

Sandsnake · 06/04/2019 10:05

I live in Surrey and commute into London. My bit’s not boring and the people are genuine and friendly! Maybe it’s your sister and who she hangs around with?

My brother lives in London. He probably manages to mention this every single time we see him. Now that’s boring...Wink
