To think Surrey is the most boring place on earth?

bricklanebagel · 06/04/2019 09:26

DSis has moved there recently with her two kids, so they can get a dog and have more of a villagey feel.
I visited and my lord was it dull.

The people I met were all the same. All of them commuted into the city. Law or Finance, take your pick. They all dressed in the same country-esque garb, thinking they were in the deep English countryside. (No Veronica put down countrylife, you live in Surrey). Probably went to Oxbridge.

It seems to be very tory, all very much competing with each other. Keeping up with the Joneses whilst thinking secretly they’re too good for their 4 bed semi worth £1mil.

AIBU?

Kingston isn’t in Surrey. It’s in a London borough.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/04/2019 12:19

Kingston is a Surrey address.

checkingforballoons · 06/04/2019 12:19

I live in a posh bit of Surrey. I drove through Addlestone this morning though, it’s important to stay grounded isn’t it.

Enko · 06/04/2019 12:22

If you had come and said you lived anywhere else but Hampshire I would have perhaps thought I could understand your point OP. However Hampshire and Surrey there is really nothing in it.. Yes I have lived in both places..

In general YABU to think a entire county is all the same..

Additionally why is it a issue if they are happy with their lives?

grasspigeons · 06/04/2019 12:26

Its nice to have somewhere to keep all the boring people together though isn't it. Otherwise we might end up somewhere else and make that boring too.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 06/04/2019 12:26

Whereas Hampstead is soooo diverse and not full of snooty Oxbridge type people...

DontCallMeCharlotte · 06/04/2019 12:27

FFS what's with all the Surrey hate on MN? This is hardly the first thread I've seen on the subject and I don't imagine it will be the last.

(Kingston is paradoxically a London Borough as well as the administrative capital of Surrey.)

MamaLovesMango · 06/04/2019 12:29

I’m sorry to say, I have experienced this too bar ‘Surrey’ which is actually London (Croydon etc).

But YABU. I can confirm that the most boring place on Earth is Northamptonshire.

DontCallMeShitley · 06/04/2019 12:29

Much prefer Surrey to Hertfordshire, that is boring and pretty awful.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 06/04/2019 12:32

Enko she lives in Hampstead not Hampshire.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/04/2019 12:41

They all seem to have the same names in Surrey, too - half the men are named Balonz and most of the women are called Data.

Witchend · 06/04/2019 12:44

It's funny how people always feel they can come on here and say things like that about Surrey, when they wouldn't about any other area (other than London)

Of course having seen a small snapshot of probably no more than a couple of days of one village in Surrey they absolutely know everything about Surrey and can comment on that. Everything said above could have been said about my grandparents' village in Lancashire (with the addition they'd have still been referring to the dsis as a "newcomer" 30 years down the line)

I assume the Op has in her time there, to make sure she has a good knowledge of the area before she made her judgement, visited all of the following and more: Guildford, Chessington Theme Park, Heathland Ranges, Wisley Gardens, Surrey Hills: (area of "outstanding natural beauty" (including Devil's Punchbowl)which covers 1/4 of the county), Basingstoke Canal, Woking, Runnymede (where the Magna Carta was signed)….

Unfinishedkitchen · 06/04/2019 12:56

Anyone who says Surrey is boring clearly hasn’t been to Hertfordshire which is boring to the point of being depressing.

Delatron · 06/04/2019 13:04

I think that about many of the ‘home counties’ and I live in one. Bedfordshire, Berkshsire, Bucks. All a bit samey.

Now Northern counties are much better, Yorkshire: North and West, Cumbria, Northumberland...:

OhTheDramz · 06/04/2019 13:24

Kingston isn’t a Surrey address or anything to do with Surrey at all. Surrey county councils head office is in Kingston but that’s just the physical location of the offices. SCC has nothing to do with anywhere in RBK.

Anyway, off topic. I grew up in Ashford, Middx and I promise no one went to Oxbridge.

GinDaddy · 06/04/2019 13:44

This is just beyond parody: OP i feel deeply sorry for you.

As it happens, you’ve uncovered one of the people you think are boring: I grew up here (born in NW Surrey), went to Oxford from state school.

I live back here because when it came time to buy, I couldn’t afford Zone 2-3 in London.

Surrey is an entire county, which seems to be the point of projection for people with FOMO at not having a Surrey postcode. So we seem to regularly get posts saying “it’s boring, everyone wears country clothing, everyone commutes” as a way of putting down something that I reckon some folk secretly envy.

Yes I’m a cliche, I work in the City. I don’t wear country clothing and neither does my wife. We don’t drive a 4x4, we do enjoy walks in the countryside (there’s farmland within six minutes’ drive of a mainline station with 12 trains an hour to Waterloo).

I don’t consider myself boring, having worked and lived abroad, run music festivals, club nights, all manner of things that don’t involve buying a middle class label to parade on show.

I think people who post about this kind of stuff are deeply insecure, strangely class-obsessed folk, who have to project onto others in order to justify why it hasn’t happened for them.

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 06/04/2019 13:47

I agree, Chickidoo, there are some lovely places and interesting people in Surrey. The skating rink at Guildford, the canal and the wood, Heath and wetland nature reserves are some of my favourites.
I’ve lived in 9 different counties, there’s always something to discover.
Often something you’be not tried or considered before.
But then my grandfather used to say ‘If you’re bored, you are boring’

otterturk · 06/04/2019 13:48

Surrey Tory heartlands here. It's bloody lovely.

GinDaddy · 06/04/2019 13:50

Agreed with above poster, there’s so much beauty and places of interest in Surrey, a Google-click away

Yes there are plenty of white Overfinch Range Rovers, overpriced beauty salons and boutiques, all the stuff you might expect if you go to Cobham or Weybridge on a Sat morning.

But you have to be looking for that stuff for it to bother you - there’s far more beauty here that outweighs that stuff anyway

DontCallMeCharlotte · 06/04/2019 13:51

Kingston isn’t a Surrey address

Yes it is. In the same way Croydon is - postally - Croydon, Surrey.

Also, the northern boundary of Surrey used to be the Thames, not just on the western side, so a lot London used to be in Surrey, including even Bermondsey. And the main Surrey cricket ground is in Kennington. Now very much London but formerly Surrey. So its history is probably one of the least boring.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 06/04/2019 13:52

Many parts are very Boden and beige

Nice but so dull

I was glad to move back to London

KissingInTheRain · 06/04/2019 13:58

Nothing wrong with Hertfordshire either. Or any of the Home Counties. Some dire bits, some natural beauty, some great wealth, some poverty.

For the most varied county - and one of the best - in England, I give you...Hampshire.

Readysteadygoat · 06/04/2019 14:00

West Sussex is similar I think, just with fewer £1mil properties

I like Reigate #shrugs

otterturk · 06/04/2019 14:01

A tip OP - you can tell someone is from Surrey by the way we pronounce Surrey a bit like "sorry".

DontCallMeCharlotte · 06/04/2019 14:04

For the most varied county - and one of the best - in England, I give you... Hampshire.

I was fortunate to live in a beautiful corner of Hampshire for a decade. Some of the loveliest countryside yet only half an hour from the sea and several interesting cities. I don't miss the mud though!
