To think Surrey is the most boring place on earth?

bricklanebagel · 06/04/2019 09:26

DSis has moved there recently with her two kids, so they can get a dog and have more of a villagey feel.
I visited and my lord was it dull.

The people I met were all the same. All of them commuted into the city. Law or Finance, take your pick. They all dressed in the same country-esque garb, thinking they were in the deep English countryside. (No Veronica put down countrylife, you live in Surrey). Probably went to Oxbridge.

It seems to be very tory, all very much competing with each other. Keeping up with the Joneses whilst thinking secretly they’re too good for their 4 bed semi worth £1mil.

AIBU?

Nope, that award goes to Sittingbourne.

Dmil has moved to Surrey though, which is a very excellent reason not to visit. DSIL is Margot Ledbetter, but not as funny or self-aware.

missmouse101 · 06/04/2019 18:04

Oh dear! I feel all protective of Surrey now! I grew up in Ashtead and loved it and would happily live there again. You can't make OTT sweeping statements about anywhere. There was always plenty to do and great places to go and I don't remember anyone being dull and boring. You're wrong OP.

Buddytheelf85 · 06/04/2019 18:07

It’s a large and - I think - surprisingly diverse county. It has its upsides and downsides (just like absolutely anywhere).

Taken as a whole, Surrey really isn’t as affluent as you imagine - there’s actually a surprising amount of deprivation.

I don’t think it’s boring - there are definitely more boring parts of the country. It’s got some really wonderful countryside - the Surrey Hills are amazing. You can actually walk out into the Surrey Hills AONB quite easily from central Guildford. I can’t think of many other large towns you can say that for.

heath48 · 06/04/2019 18:10

IsabelleSE19 I didn’t say the South Downs were in Surrey,I said I missed being near them!!?

madcatladyforever · 06/04/2019 18:16

I can say this now as I'm retired from being a private health professional and quite frankly am too old to care any more. I've worked all over the country. People from wealthy parts of Surrey, West Sussex, Brighton and places like that were an absolute nightmare, entitled, demanding, rude if they were paying for a service.
Give me decent working class down to earth folk any day of the week. The rougher the area the more I enjoyed working there.

Susanna30 · 06/04/2019 18:18

I'd much rather live in Hampstead, OP!! 😂

hopefulhalf · 06/04/2019 18:19

Surrey is fine, but it doesn't exactly have much "edge" and some of it is just horrible without being in anyway interesting.

Tealtights · 06/04/2019 18:20

I mean is there really anywhere in the UK that is actually super exciting to live? Our weather is shit and our politics are deplorable at the moment, not sure there is anywhere in the UK I could get excited about right now.

hammeringinmyhead · 06/04/2019 18:20

No. Another saying Lincolnshire wins. Thank god my in-laws have moved.

I live in Wiltshire which is not exciting, but am from West Yorkshire which is clearly the best of all the counties.

Pa1oma · 06/04/2019 18:28

There is a reason property costs more in London and that is because it’s kess boring than everywhere else.

OP - Richmond is in Surrey and that’s not unlike Hampstead really, is it. Yes you r got the Heath, but they have the river. Similar shops and vibe. Personally, I wouldn’t live outside of London and if I had to I would go abroad tbh. However, there are FAR WORSE places than Surrey. I mean really dire.

GinDaddy · 06/04/2019 18:31

The criteria used on this thread is entirely arbitrary, no one criticising Surrey really knows anything about it.

I mean don’t let me stop you from needlessly projecting all your middle class bile onto our county, but if you’ve never been to the Surrey Hills or enjoyed an evening at one of the excellent eateries in Ripley, then please don’t comment, it makes you look as small minded as you most likely are

OhTheDramz · 06/04/2019 18:49

@JassyRadlett 😂 you rumbled me! Many times I have whiled away an hour laughing at a “where is Kingston” thread. This one hasn’t gone off quite as I’d hoped though.

BerryMenthol · 06/04/2019 18:51

@Raspberry10 - Caterham is Surrey.... you pay your council tax to Tandridge Council which is under Surrey CC if you live there. So you are good on that one!

Hampstead is however probably the most boring bit of Camden... so OP I am not sure you are as interesting as you think you are?

I lived in Surrey for 15 years, it's ok, its much of a muchness when you leave central London and go into the outer/greater boroughs and home counties... they are all the same, they all have massive superstore foodshops, all have ring roads that are crap at rush hour, all seem to have a pets at home ..... I live in another home county now... feels the same as when I lived in Surrey, or Bromley!

BlueSkiesLies · 06/04/2019 19:07

Yeah, super dull. But there are nice hills for cycling and cool MTB trails.

fiorentina · 06/04/2019 19:10

Like anywhere if you don’t find like minded people the area can be dull. I was born in Surrey and live here again. Love the countryside and love getting into london easily for work, shopping and culture. I certainly don’t wear head to toe Joules or Boden, nor do my friends. I work in finance but sure as hell don’t spend my free time talking about work.
Going to other areas I do try and look for the positives rather than just slag them off..

JassyRadlett · 06/04/2019 19:11

Richmond is in Surrey

🙄

JassyRadlett · 06/04/2019 19:12

I guess everyone needs a hobby.

OhTheDramz · 06/04/2019 19:21

Ok......

IsabelleSE19 · 06/04/2019 20:17

Stand down heath - it wasn't your comment I was talking about!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 06/04/2019 20:28

Raspberry10 And just to further muddy the waters, Couldson Common comes under the jurisdiction of the City of London...

KissingInTheRain · 06/04/2019 20:38

Quite a few commons and woods outside the city are owned and managed by the Corporation of London: www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/green-spaces/city-commons/Pages/City-Commons.aspx

honeylane · 06/04/2019 20:41

I agree

Although I live in Kent so automatically have a hatred of all things Surrey

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 06/04/2019 20:47

Michael Gove was my MP when I lived in Surrey. Needless to say I didn’t and couldn’t, vote for him. Our little village was quite nice, but public transport was poor and traffic awful.

I worked in Addlestone for a number of years. Not a place I would choose to live, but still expensive. Guildford is lovely and the Surrey Hills area is too.

We’re now near the sea in West Sussex. Good pointsand bad points, but the good outweigh the bad atthe moment. Chichester is a pretty town, but has lost so many shops in the last few years.

Purplehammer · 06/04/2019 21:02

Definitely Lincolnshire.
Mile after mile of fuck all.
Lincolnshire people are terminally apathetic, which is the reason I have never lived anywhere else.
Also the natives are the most unfriendly people on earth, we are proud of this.
I am fortunate though, I don’t live in the fens.

MorganKitten · 06/04/2019 21:04

Kingston is a Surrey address.

Only in name, it’s now Greater London.
