I'm watching a documentary and everyone in it speaks with vocal fry probably 85/90% of the time and it's so moronic. Why why is this a thing?

@AstonishedFemalePersonator I’d always recommend a good singing teacher who is informed by science. One who is an Estill CMT would be perfect.

However there are some Estill and Science Based singing bloggers on YouTube who are a good start like Tom Burke and Singwise if you want to have a go at home.

There’s a video somewhere on Singwise that uses vocal fry as an exercise but I can’t find it right now (have a gig in half an hour lol). This one is a good start on VF Closure m.youtube.com/watch?v=LCGxDJ-IZ6g

I can see why people think signing out vocal fry can me seen as sexist.

People learn vocal fry from each other just like accents are learnt.

I am not bothered by it.

I popped on to see what it was because I'd never heard of it, can't say I have ever noticed it but I really can't bring myself to be annoyed by the way other people talk.

I can't listen to the newsreader on Rock FM in the mornings for this reason Blush

Once you've noticed you can never stop noticing it.

That is so true.

There's also a ghost character in Teen Titans Go with a voice like this that I have to turn over.

I would never show my dislike of the voice in real life as you don't know if people can't help it.

I think you can tell, it goes hand in hand with other annoying affectations.

I'm just adding this one in because it is SO bad. Male vocal fry - but the entire thing is a pisstake, none of it is the people's real voices, the voice- over guy is taking the piss out of their voices, so they do talk rather like that in RL too. Not much rising inflection going on, despite being Australian.

I saw something that said more men do it than women actually, I'll try and dig it out.

The way people talk changes over time. I don’t really think it’s that big of a deal.

If you want to hear men and women speak like it constantly watch Alaskan Bush People. They all barely speak properly at all!!

When I was younger all the Radio 1 Dj’s did it, Nick Grimshaw, Fearne Cotton, Sara Cox, Jo Wiley (worst of all!

At Drama School when we did Radio Drama and VOs we were told to use vocal fry for young “cool” or sexy characters and for “cool” product adverts. I doubt that advice has changed. Thing was it was never meant to be constant through the voice, just at the beginning or very end of the odd sentence.

I could. Not. Watch. Deliciously Ella videos on YouTube. Her voice drove me up the pole.

I've been told I have this in the past, but was not aware of it until the person did an impression of me. I'm quite well spoken and definitely not trying to sound any particular way at all, it just seems to somehow have happened to my voice!

I definitely never thought of myself as sounding sexy or cool, maybe a bit posh and snotty (don't really like my voice) so it's definitely not all people trying to sound alluring.

I realised last week just how common this has become, especially the wannabe posh-girl variant.

Fuck me, it’s annoying. Thanks MN for allowing me to name the problem Grin
