I'm watching a documentary and everyone in it speaks with vocal fry probably 85/90% of the time and it's so moronic. Why why is this a thing?

It’s awful. I heard a podcast about it that said it’s supposed to suggest high socioeconomic status by making young women sound more masculine or something...

I once read an article that said hating vocal fry was a sign of misogyny, as it was mostly done by women. So I got my male buddy to try it too, and I can categorically state I hate it from men even more.

I can cope with vocal fry better than high rising terminal/Australian question intonation where every sentence ends as though it's a question. That drives me nuts.

I notice it a lot in American TV shows (especially ‘reality’ ones). Seems to be stereotypical ‘airhead’ type females that do it, or ‘stoner’ type makes. It’s kind of annoying once you start noticing it.

Isn't that video saying that people can't help it though?
People do get annoyed about so many things here on Mumsnet, I can picture all these angry people going 'Yes, that's expression is annoying, OMG yes, I hate that. And VOCAL FRY, that makes me want to murder someone'. Lots of angry people jabbing away at their laptops, so funny!!

It's very affected, as the actresses in the Windsors show, and some people might do it naturally but others put it on - it's becoming a lot more common now than it used to be.

Hate it. An Australian colleague speaks this way and I honestly cannot listen to her without cringing. Strikes me as very lazy.

I want to join your club merdde.

I never remember anything someone says when they speak like this because all I notice is the sound their vocal chords are making.

Gah, I have a name for it now. When I'm at work, most people talk like this. Even their "goodbyes" sound sarcastic and pissed off.

I didn't know what it was but just looked on YouTube and now I do and I'll never be able to stop noticing it.
