IBS? Food poisoning? What is it?

I made a vegan bolognese for dinner tonight (boyfriend ate too), literally the same thing I've made a million times with no issues: Passata, Fresh organic sweet onions (first time buying organic onions), garlic, mushrooms and Morrisons soya mince. Had wholewheat pasta and grated cheese with it.

About 1 1/2hrs after really bad cramping, gas pains and 2 trips to the toilet with painful loose stools. (Sorry!)
I took 2 Imodium after the second bout and haven't had any since but my stomach is still making noises/bubbling. I never felt nauseas and the pains and cramps were lower stomach only.

What could have caused this? My bf is fine- he usually gets gassy after soya mince but it's never affected me before so I'm really confused (and in pain).

Sounds like a bug hope you feel better soon x

Lovingbenidorm · 01/03/2019 02:04

I’m going with IBS

CardsforKittens · 01/03/2019 02:05

I had food poisoning once. I vomited every hour all night and all the next morning. Apart from that I couldn’t move. I had two days off work. It was awful. Many people have it worse, depending on the source.

It sounds like you’re having a reaction to something you ate but it’s probably not food poisoning. Maybe a slightly different formula in the soya mince? (I eat dead animal mince so don’t know how vegan mince works - sorry.)

siestakey · 01/03/2019 02:05

@NewYoiker thank you! I'm not convinced it's a bug though as no vomiting/other unwell symptoms iyswim? Hopefully it's not!

Onions make my stomach gurgle and hiss like crazy, it took me ages to work out what it was. I use shallots now with no ill effects.

Hope you're better in the morning

siestakey · 01/03/2019 02:07

@CardsforKittens oh man that sounds awful! No vomiting so far (hopefully none at all- I'm so scared of throwing up!)

Yeah I think you might be right, just an off day with my stomach maybe? It's making so many noises it's ridiculous 😂😂😫 my boyfriends fine so I'm pretty sure it's deffo not food poisoning.

@Lovingbenidorm that's what I'm leaning towards it is. I used to have it but haven't had a relapse for years. I think I'll make sure i take some Colofac before meals tomorrow to calm my stomach down. I never had IBS like this though, it used to be constant nausea, gas pains, rarely diarrhoea.

OP posts:
siestakey · 01/03/2019 02:09

@pinkground202 Thank you, I was suspecting onions as the passata already had onion it in then I added an extra one (it was a mini onion though). I think onion can be quite a known IBS trigger too.

I had really bad cramps, diarrhoea, and nothing else apart from w bit of heartburn which was weird on Sunday morning which was awkward as I had to drive for 2 hours Blush but I felt fine apart from a bit tired, that was definitely a bug I think.

siestakey · 01/03/2019 02:10

@NewYoiker hmm, could be then! I hadn't eaten all day as I was feeling really tired (actually slept most of the day which is unusual)

Was taking an Imodium the best option do you guys think? I'm scared I should have just let it run its course and now I'll feel crap for longer but obviously Imodium is made for stopping diarrhoea and pain so I thought it best to take one.

pinkground202 · 01/03/2019 02:19

Sensible to take Imodium I think. Peppermint tea is soothing if you have any. I always keep buscopan in the house, usually settles my stomach, I think colofac is pretty similar

siestakey · 01/03/2019 02:22

@pinkground202 ah good, no peppermint tea unfortunately but I do also have some buscopan! I'll have a google which is better vs colofac for tomorrow. I hope I feel better when I wake up, I feel kind of hungry now which I guess is a good sign that I'm not ill!

Supposed to be going to the cinema tomorrow evening for my partner and I's weekly date and I don't want to miss it :( ironically enough I felt ill on our date last Friday! (Nausea) but nothing came of it.

@pinkground202 Thank you, you've helped calm my nerves a little :)

Did you fry the onions until they were soft and brownish?

Undercooked onions can be hard to digest.

Hope you feel better soon!

Deliqueen · 01/03/2019 07:16

Have you looked at the ingredients in the soya mince? It's more likely to be your stomach reacting to TVP( often in soya mince) This is an unnatural processed product which is well known for causing stomach upsets.

siestakey · 01/03/2019 08:01

@Deliqueen No I haven't, I'll have a check online..

Rehydrated Textured Soya Protein (96%), Rapeseed Oil, Yeast Extract, Malted Barley Extract, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Cornflour, Dextrose, Salt, White Pepper

It's funny because I had the same mince the other day and was fine.

siestakey · 01/03/2019 08:02

@OneStepSideways I did it till they were translucent then slightly brown on the edges with the mushrooms and garlic.

Dont rule out a bug. Ive spent the last 48 hours feeling like this. Ive not been sick had a few issues with the other end but nothing too severe. Middle ds has had it as well.

SlangBack · 01/03/2019 08:07

I was going to say its the mince as people can have a bad reaction to it, but as you have had it before it might not be.

OftenHangry · 01/03/2019 08:11

It wouldn't be food poisoning. That usually shows later than hour or hour and half. It's most likely your gut. Mine can get upset over something I have eaten before. I think it may have something to do with combination of food throughout the day. God kniws with mine🙄
Hope you are feeling better.

siestakey · 01/03/2019 08:15

@Nousernameforme I hope it's not, I hate getting ill.🙁 Hope you and DS are feeling better.🤞🏻Thanks

I think as it happened literally an hour-hour and a half after eating it's more likely an IBS reaction tbh.

OP posts:
siestakey · 01/03/2019 08:17

@OftenHangry Yeah I think you're right, I hadn't eaten all day so I suspected the onions, garlic or mince being a trigger for it.
