IBS? Food poisoning? What is it?

I made a vegan bolognese for dinner tonight (boyfriend ate too), literally the same thing I've made a million times with no issues: Passata, Fresh organic sweet onions (first time buying organic onions), garlic, mushrooms and Morrisons soya mince. Had wholewheat pasta and grated cheese with it.

About 1 1/2hrs after really bad cramping, gas pains and 2 trips to the toilet with painful loose stools. (Sorry!)
I took 2 Imodium after the second bout and haven't had any since but my stomach is still making noises/bubbling. I never felt nauseas and the pains and cramps were lower stomach only.

What could have caused this? My bf is fine- he usually gets gassy after soya mince but it's never affected me before so I'm really confused (and in pain).

@Strugglingonagain Thank you, managed to sleep from 3am but still feel a bit iffy. Stomach hurts when I put too much pressure on it. Sad

It takes 24/48 hrs for food you've eaten to reach your bowel so if it's an IBS type reaction it will actually be something you ate 24/48 hrs ago. Eating sets off your digestive system (ie gets it going) so eating can start the reaction but you are actually reacting to foods eaten 1 or 2 days before.

siestakey · 01/03/2019 08:29

@MiniMum97 I didn't know that! That's interesting.. I can't really remember what I ate the day before/day before that. Maybe I'll keep a food diary from now and see if anything pops up?

@siestakey wow. If I don't eat during the day, I could have a lettuce leaf in the evening and it would put me in agonyGrin

Take care of yourself. Eat something little throughout the day. It helped me.

@MiniMum97 no it won't. It can take 4 hours. It can take even 2. Or 24. Very much depends on someone's stomach. Certain food poisoning also shows after just 4 hours.

donajimena · 01/03/2019 08:34

I had something similar on Monday. My stomach was so sore (trapped wind type of sore) until I went to bed on Weds evening. I have no idea what it was but I also doubt it was food poisoning.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 01/03/2019 08:36

Quorn gives me terrible stomach cramps.

There is also a stomach bug going round.

OftenHangry · 01/03/2019 08:37

Though. What comes out was the food from the day before. 🙈

siestakey · 01/03/2019 08:39

@OftenHangry Grin Thank you, I'll wait and see if I fancy something in a bit- maybe some porridge? (With dairy free milk! Milk is a huge trigger for me and I haven't had it in years).

Yeah my doctor told me that quicker reactions after eating a meal are more likely to be linked to that meal, not something a day or so ago.

@donajimena Oh poor you :( yes it's awful isn't it! So uncomfortable.

siestakey · 01/03/2019 08:42

@SmiledWithTheRisingSun I think I'm unlikely to have been exposed to a stomach bug (haven't been out much in a few days as been busy working from home and no kids/not been around kids etc). Also they usually involve vomiting/feeling generally ill I think.

I'm going to go with IBS reaction as I haven't had loose stools since taking the IBS. Just feel really gassy today and uncomfortable (FMLBlushGrin)

@siestakey it's a pain (literally). I have no issue with chese. Or dough. But put them together and... Ouch.
You will probably laugh, but slendertone helped me. Not joking. I haven't had a gassy or painful day since I started using it and mind me, I even had a pizza! I have no idea how, but it helped.

siestakey · 01/03/2019 08:49

@OftenHangry What is slendertone? (Sounds like a miracle maker to allow you to enjoy pizza again!)😍

Maybe you have an intolerance to something. I can eat onion and garlic, for example, but I have an intolerance to them - so I might get severe bloating/gas, or it may go the other way (like you!) IF I have also had something else I'm intolerant to. So basically I can eat one or two things I'm intolerant to and have a bloated stomach, or I can eat several things (which obviously I wouldn't, now that I know) and have real problems.

OftenHangry · 01/03/2019 08:55

It's that "get a six pack" belt thing! Obviously I know it's not going to give me a six pack, but it seems to work on the core muscles, which I needed due to my back. Then I realised it worked on my angry intestines too. I honestly don't know if it works for everyone or just few, but I am over the moon. On a negative note. I have much less funny fart stories now.

Soy allergy? Can come on at any time.

Not always! I had sweetcorn the other day and they came out the following day - 12 hours later... (sorry, tmi)

OftenHangry · 01/03/2019 09:02

@kingfisherblue33 love the corn😂
It's like curry. You just kniw when it's gone through. Usually 12 hours😂

Yes, corn is a good gauge of the speed of your digestive system... 😂😂

Hollowvictory · 01/03/2019 09:05

Onions are bad for ibs. We use finely chopped celery instead

Imperfectsusan · 01/03/2019 09:08

I also heard soy doesn't suit everyone.

OftenHangry · 01/03/2019 09:08

@MiniMum97 you said it takes 24-48 hours to reach bowls. That's contradicted even by the article. You meant mouth-> anus, didn't you.
I was talking about mouth->intestine (bowels).

OftenHangry · 01/03/2019 09:09

Omg. Bowels. Not bowl. Though it does eventually reach a bowl....

I started a post a good while back about soya mince. I’d eaten it once and been fine. The second time I felt queasy and gassy afterwards but thought nothing of it. The third time I felt horrendous all night, cramps, nausea, bloating and terrible noises coming from my insides! I asked on here about it because I didn’t realise people could react like that to soya mince if they’d been ok previously. So anyway that’s off the menu now! It’s probably not that in your case as you’ve eaten it so many more times than I had, but just thought I’d add my experience of it for anyone else reading.

OftenHangry · 01/03/2019 09:13

@MiniMum97 woke up on a wrong side of a bed???

There is nothing pedantic about saying bowls are intestines, because they are and that it doesn't take 24-48 hours for food to reach them.
