IBS? Food poisoning? What is it?

I made a vegan bolognese for dinner tonight (boyfriend ate too), literally the same thing I've made a million times with no issues: Passata, Fresh organic sweet onions (first time buying organic onions), garlic, mushrooms and Morrisons soya mince. Had wholewheat pasta and grated cheese with it.

About 1 1/2hrs after really bad cramping, gas pains and 2 trips to the toilet with painful loose stools. (Sorry!)
I took 2 Imodium after the second bout and haven't had any since but my stomach is still making noises/bubbling. I never felt nauseas and the pains and cramps were lower stomach only.

What could have caused this? My bf is fine- he usually gets gassy after soya mince but it's never affected me before so I'm really confused (and in pain).

I just ate some breakfast as I was feeling hungry, some plain muesli (no added sugar) with dairy free coconut milk & strawberries... hopefully I'll be okay😂 though I'm worried it'll be a bad idea in less than an hour😅

Going to try and distract myself with work now.🤞🏻

@siestakey good luck. It really just may have been the combination of not eating and then the food.

Also. I can't believe I am still misspelling bowels. Damn it

ZanyMobster · 01/03/2019 10:36

My DH is allergic to soya, he had exactly the same symptoms when he first started drinking protein shakes for training. We thought it was a bug for a week then realised what it was.

BrightYellowHat · 01/03/2019 10:37

Lactose intolerance?

berrybubbles · 01/03/2019 10:38

I find that most vegan foods upset my stomach. Especially quorn! I’ve never found out why though

MegaBat · 01/03/2019 10:40

Do you have health anxiety? It reads a little like you do. Otherwise just put it down to 'one of those things' that happens to us all at some time or other

siestakey · 01/03/2019 11:19

@MegaBat yeah I do but only around things like stomach issues (vomiting mainly as I'm hugely scared of it!).

@BrightYellowHat Cheese I'm usually fine with- I cut out milk ages ago as I couldn't tolerate that.

BrightYellowHat · 01/03/2019 23:52

So it depends on the cheese - hard mature ones tend to be virtually lactose free. Mozzarella and other young soft cheeses are full of it. You can also make yourself lactose intolerant by cutting out dairy products - your body just stops producing the enzyme needed to break down lactose.

Ibs can be set off by not eating then overeating, it’s a huge trigger.

I’m not so sure about this digestive reaction thing taking 24-48 hours because if I have gluten it pretty much gives me about half an hour to an hour then the reaction starts and everything comes out everything pretty much undigested. Same with lactose tbh, I don’t get much leeway. And I plan when to eat lactose and I’m usually fine after half a day or so, so I’m just not buying into it’s something you ate days ago. -from someone who has a very close relationship with her bowel 🤣

OftenHangry · 02/03/2019 00:38

@TheDarkPassenger hello fellow "masochyst" 😂 I plan to have my "dangerous" foods too. Depends on what I plan to do next morning😂

Waiting4mumhood · 02/03/2019 00:42

Ive got ibs and for me wheat is 80% of timw massive trigger, onion celery chick peas leeks and cauliflower occasionally caise problems, cant eat plums at all. Give fodmap a look. Bear in mind following the fodmap diet yes I found out my triggers but I became more sensitive so now I can't get away with eating wheat at all.

OftenHangry · 02/03/2019 00:55

@Waiting4mumhood I was very lucky that when gp and I identified gluten, I worked out it was wheat, not rye and when I am "good" for a week I can enjoy a pizza dinner and just get bloated.
Wheat free is killing me. Born and bread to live on beer and sourdough🙄
My problems were stressed induced though so that's I think the difference. Mind me, the stress happened 4 years ago...

TheDarkPassenger · 02/03/2019 01:12

@OftenHangry yep weekends are my ‘I can have proper cheese’ time! Grin

I’m coeliac though so the wheat/gluten sitch is a bit more strict 😖 if I wanna eat decent stuff I have to pay through the nose for it! (And I do because I like food a lot) I cried a lot when I first got diagnosed but I’m good with it now (Thankyou to Pizza Hut and their gluten free but veryyyyyy lactose-y pizzas) it’s almost worth seeing it twice 😂

OftenHangry · 02/03/2019 07:52

@TheDarkPassenger do you get some vouchers from your doctor?
Took AGES to find gluten free bread which resembled real bread. Sainsbury's came nearest.

Mortgages · 02/03/2019 08:03

I’ve had this before with soya mince even after previously having the same mince. It’s not a natural product and can cause stomach upset if you’ve had a duff batch.

eco1636 · 02/03/2019 08:07

You can have serious food poisoning without vomiting. I had campylobacter (stool sample identified), was severely dehydrated and lost a stone, and I only had diorrea the whole.time.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 02/03/2019 08:12

Mushrooms do this to me. I hope you feel better today op.

HappyGoGoLucky · 02/03/2019 08:22

I am betting it is the soya mince. It plays havoc with my IBS!

Pimmsypimms · 02/03/2019 08:35

I get really bad cramps from eating soya mince, every time. I avoid it now.

siestakey · 02/03/2019 08:36

Hey guys, I was absolutely fine yesterdaySmile ate as normal (even some crisps and chocolate after dinner while watching a film.

Pretty sure it was onion for me as the pre made passata already had onion in it then I added 2 more! (Literally smaller than a golf ball size though, they were mini onions)

OP posts:
GoGoGadgetGin · 02/03/2019 08:41

OP for me it's whole-wheat pasta that gives me these symptoms- no issues at all with any other types of wheat/gluten but after a meal of similar to yours l spent hours cramped in pain huddled on the bathroom floor!

TheDarkPassenger · 02/03/2019 10:05

@OftenHangry they do bread and flour on prescription but I just buy it myself as the quality is errrrrm, well to be desired!
Warburtons artisan tiger loaf- £3.50 a go but it’s like proper bread! I can actually have a sandwich with it without toasting it!

Op so glad you’re feeling better! To answer your earlier question about Colofac and buscopan they are different medication but Colofac is apparently stronger. I prefer buscopan for stomach cramps though, works within minutes whereas I feel I have to build Colofac up.

Fiveredbricks · 02/03/2019 10:07

If you're due on or mid cycle it can be hormones. My IBS is hormonal.

OftenHangry · 02/03/2019 11:27

@TheDarkPassenger oh I HATED the tiger loaf. It was so dissapointing. 😮
Ibut I agree that 99% of gluten free bread has to be toasted and it's so annoying.
I think worst wasthe Genius brand🤢
