Husband not making bottle according to instructions

I don't know if I'm being unreasonable. I have no doubt I'll be told if I am!

Have moved nearly 9 m/o to formula in preparation for me going back to work. Got a perfect prep second hand and powdered hipp organic formula. Back of box says 4 x 5oz bottles for her age - so far so good.

Except it specifically says to level off the scoop. I do this, as I always follow instructions. No individual thought here. If a recipe says 500ml of stock, I'm using 500ml of stock. Not 550ml, not 450ml. That's the rule. I'm sticking to it.

My husband DOES NOT level off the scoop, but neither is it heaped. He just kind of jigs it, thinks "good enough!" and away he goes.

I made a massive deal out of, asked him why he wouldn't use it, and he said because it's not needed. A big row ensued, now not talking and apparently I can go fuck myself.

He will be looking after the baby 2 days a week as I'm going back full time.

Is this a problem? The scoops, not the row.

I really don't think you need to worry about this for a 9 month old baby.

That would irk me too. Its not like its hard to use the leveller thingy. But realistically... I doubt its a huge problem. Unless they were massively over or under it probably largely evens out.

Its meant to be scoop, level, use.

Because that particular routine makes the scoop right.

Its more important for younger infants, but the amount has to exact because of the levels of ingredients in each scoop

Too much powder can constipate them. Not enough powder won’t give them the full amount of nutrients they need. The leveller is there for a reason. Your DH is being a dick.

It does need to be right to be honest. If there’s too much powder your baby could become constipated and that’s just unnecessary discomfort for the sake of a few seconds of levelling. The Hipp box even has a leveller built in so no excuses.

I thought you were going to say he only uses 3 scoops instead of 4 or something. For a newborn, I think it would be more a worry but not at 9 months.

It's fine, at 9 months I still breastfed but had follow on formula for if I was out - I came back to find dh feeding dd cows milk with nesquik because it tastes nicer! She lived.

At that age I wouldn't be bothered. Did you know exactly how much breast milk your baby drank at every feed? How rich or not it was? At 9 months, your baby will be having other foods which may not be quite so precisely measured out.
Give him a break, it's his baby too!

If the concentrations are way out it can cause kidney problems. It's unlikely to be a big problem in a healthy baby if it's slightly over but it makes sense to get into the habit of doing it correctly.

I don't really think it matters at 9 months.

FWIW I'm still breastfeeding bottle refusing DC2 at nearly 9 months and going back to work soon. I'm satisfied that at 9 months with a good appetite for solids and tap water that even if she won't take a bottle then she's still not going to come to any harm if she doesn't get any milk for 8 hours.

In a few months (weeks!) time she eons even need the milk in theory anyway.

You know even levelling it off you aren't being precise? And at 9 months old your baby is eating solids so not all their nutrition comes from milk. Not a big deal.

I levelled it, but only because I got into a routine having used formula from a much younger age where I felt it was important to be accurate as it is easy to overfeed a younger baby with formula.
At 9 months though I wouldn't worry too much. I would worry if they were heaped, but tapped and levelled will be fine.

In fact most formula tins I used had a thing on the edge of the inside rim to level it off with, so the same effect as jiggling it probably!!

Unless your baby is properly 'calibrated', meaning at the size and weight that the feed instructions 'calculated' then you are being overly obsessive.
While there is a feeling of wanting to be 'right' about these things once a baby is more than a few months old 'about right' is fine.
When DC was born I was given a 'quota' for expressed milk, which was a bit of a struggle for a week. Change of ward sister who recalculated and informed that had been underfeeding by about 50%.
Que massive concern (at the time). DC seems fine 18 years on.

I always shook, DD is fine. She also never ate what it said on the box and weaned herself off it at 11 months. She's still alive and doing well.
Are there any other reasons why you don't trust him with the bay on his own? Is this a single blown out of proportion issue(in my eyes) or just the last straw?

I do trust him with the baby? I'm not sure I was going to trust him making up the bottles if it was imperative they were EXACTLY right. I would pre measure or just get him to use ready made. Seems OK though. Bit of a leap to say I don't trust him with her.

I dont level my scoops either, when i asked the health visitor is it okay when i realized that it might cause issues she said yes they are only guidelines and as long as it isn't being heaped and its just a scoop then it really doesn't matter.

I do understand its a worry as i worried at first when i realized but its honestly find, Formula used to not even include the scoops and it was just done via spoonfuls.

Unclench a bit. You will have a horrible time if you can't learn to recognise the important stuff and let go of the rest in a good- humoured manner.
I'm wondering how this "no individual thought here" approach affects other aspects of your life.
