Husband not making bottle according to instructions

I don't know if I'm being unreasonable. I have no doubt I'll be told if I am!

Have moved nearly 9 m/o to formula in preparation for me going back to work. Got a perfect prep second hand and powdered hipp organic formula. Back of box says 4 x 5oz bottles for her age - so far so good.

Except it specifically says to level off the scoop. I do this, as I always follow instructions. No individual thought here. If a recipe says 500ml of stock, I'm using 500ml of stock. Not 550ml, not 450ml. That's the rule. I'm sticking to it.

My husband DOES NOT level off the scoop, but neither is it heaped. He just kind of jigs it, thinks "good enough!" and away he goes.

I made a massive deal out of, asked him why he wouldn't use it, and he said because it's not needed. A big row ensued, now not talking and apparently I can go fuck myself.

He will be looking after the baby 2 days a week as I'm going back full time.

Is this a problem? The scoops, not the row.
In a way, I hope I'm being unreasonable. But it does very clearly say to level off the scoop!!

Always level off! As above have said it can make your baby constipated- plus think of all the wasted powder! Formula isn't cheap 😂

Thequaffle · 28/02/2019 21:36

It’s no extra effort to level it off. The instructions say level so he should follow them. YANBU.

Fiveredbricks · 28/02/2019 21:38

Perfect Prep machines dont make the formula properly either. They cause untold gut problems.

You need to add the powder, scold it with 1/2oz of boiling water and then top up with cooled boiled water. Tbh it evens out over a few days and your 9m old will be fine as I assume at least one meal is solids now?

HedgePlastic · 28/02/2019 21:40

Lol! It completely doesn't matter. Please try to relax. I've always just jiggled it. Are you realy worried about a few micrograms difference? Surely there might be a few millileters difference in the amount of water you put in too 😂

Quooker · 28/02/2019 21:43

Yabu for using a perfect prep.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 28/02/2019 21:45

Babies of 9months are chewing carpets so I wouldn't be too bothered by whether a scoop of milk powder was perfect or if it was made within tow hours!

Why not just skip formula and go straight to cow's milk?

Micah · 28/02/2019 21:45

If he’s shaking it level whats the issue?

I am a scientist and believe me I’ve had to let this stuff go. I remember preparing bottles for the first time and staring at the steriliser thinking the minute i open the lid nothing is sterile any more. To prepare a sterile bottle I needed a UV flow hood, 100% alcohol, an autoclave and surgical gloves. This thing that wafted a bit of steam around was not getting things sterile. I have seen what will grow in nutrient rich media in these conditions Grin

Same with formula powder. A spoon is not an accurate measure. If you tamp it down while you’re levelling there will be quite a bit more than if you don’t. If you weighed each levelled spoonful accurately each one would be different.

These sorts of measurements are vague. A spoon shaken level is about as accurate as one levelled with a bit of plastic.

*two hours

Houseonahill · 28/02/2019 21:47

I'd be more concerned about the perfect prep machine than the nearly level scoop. When I had DD there was signs all over the maternity ward saying they aren't safe and not to use them?

reallyanotherone · 28/02/2019 21:49

You need to add the powder, scold it

It’s very naughty and I disapprove of it’s mere existence.

Grin

Sorry- Visual image of someone giving a bottle of formula a right telling off...

Dyrne · 28/02/2019 21:50

Karwomannghia To be honest, if DP started having a go at me and caused a row over something that didn’t really matter; and made me feel as though I couldn’t be trusted to do something as simple as feed my own child; I would probably end up swearing at him in the heat of the moment too.

Talkingfrog · 28/02/2019 21:57

Dd will be fine with the scoop being levelled by a shake.

When my daughter was about a similar age she was with my parents one day a week. I pre measured powder into a three sectioned formula pot. Showed my mum how to turn the lid to dispense the next one when needed.
My mum made her a bottle using all three portions of powder! Dd managed to drink it too (not all of it). When I saw the pot and asked how many bottles she had drunk as I expected dome left, we realised what had happened.
Dd was fine. I reduced the amount of formula on the next days bottles so the amount of water and formula totalled correctly for the 24 hour period. I was amazed the milk m anaged to get through the teet of the bottle as I would have expected it to be too thick!

Fiveredbricks

She's on 3 meals a day, although a lot ends up on the floor when she's given finger food.

The perfect prep makes the bottle up the way you describe too I think. 1 or 2 oz hot water, topped up with cooled boiled water.

Houseonahill - I'll double check with my HV but I've never seen a warning sign for one in my area!

Doghorsechicken · 28/02/2019 23:35

HV aren’t allowed to recommend prep machines. Mine is fantastic and I have used it almost since birth. DS is now 9 months but I still level the scoop, if I don’t he gets constipated. People have been so snooty up thread!

chuttypicks · 28/02/2019 23:44

You really need to choose your battles. If you're arguing over such a minor thing now, imagine all the other things that'll cause a row with how he does things in the future. Not worth it IMO.

kmc1111 · 28/02/2019 23:58

It’s really not a big deal. If he was doing a random number of scoops that would be an issue, but this really isn’t. If it was the instructions would be to weigh the powder since levelling it off is very imprecise too. Sometimes there’ll be more packed in a leveled off scoop, sometimes less.

Fiveredbricks · 01/03/2019 08:15

No @Reccy2018 the perfect prep doesn't get near hot enough and most of them end up with sitting mould in the tubes. Get rid. Use a kettle and a britta jug for the previously boiled water. It is 1000 x easier anyway. Grim machines. There's a reason they're cheap to buy now.
