Bloody Yankee candles

CaptainCabinets · 05/02/2019 16:07

I received a Yankee candle as a gift (meant to be ‘rainbow cookie’ scented, whatever that is!)

I’m partial to a nice candle so I started burning it and it’s tunnelled straight down the middle, leaving an inch of wax either side Angry, it’s black all round the glass and it smells of absolutely nothing.

AIBU to think they’re overpriced tatty shite and I ought to stick to my lovely little cheapies forever more?!

Count your lucky stars. Rainbow cookie sounds vile.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 05/02/2019 16:08

Are you sure it wasn’t a fake . They shouldn’t burn like that.

TulipsTwoLips · 05/02/2019 16:08

Is it a genuine one? Mine burn very evenly, though some scents are definitely stronger than others.

CaptainCabinets · 05/02/2019 16:10

Haven’t a clue, someone palmed it off on me gave it to me as a present and I’ve never bought one myself so I wouldn’t know if it was real or otherwise!

I find Yankee candle exactly the same, burns through the centre and ZERO scent, they're not cheap either, I had a look at their Christmas range in December I'm glad I didn't bother, the scents sound lovely but I knew they wouldn"t last so I went to Crabtree & Evelyn instead, their scents last and fill the room, lovely!

Nottobesoldseparately · 05/02/2019 16:19

Is it a jar?
How long did you leave it burning for each time??
I'm not a fan of Yankee, I save any I'm given for the garden.

PinkHeart5914 · 05/02/2019 16:21

They always burn like that if you just light them for a little while, they need to be left to burn for hours to melt properly.

I’ve unfortunately had a few as gifts as I use them so they aren’t wasted but I don’t rate them at all. I either buy Jo malone or stick to my tea lights

CaptainCabinets · 05/02/2019 16:23

It’s a big jar, left it burning for about 4 hours yesterday and it just shot straight down the middle. I lit it again about 20 mins ago and it now smells like coal tar shampoo Envy so it’s going in the bin when it cools down!

DullPortraits · 05/02/2019 16:25

Did u trim the wick before lighting it?

CaptainCabinets · 05/02/2019 16:25

I’ve got my little tea lights and wax melts and my posh spiced orange Willow and Honey candle (also a present from someone no longer with us so it’s very sentimental as well as gorgeous) on the go now so farewell, Yankee and see you never Grin

FooFighter99 · 05/02/2019 16:27

You have to burn them for ages the first time (about 7/8 hours) so that the whole top melts

I LOVE the Stony Cove Yankee candle and it's the only one I've found that I can actually smell while it's lit.

CaptainCabinets · 05/02/2019 16:27

Yep, trimmed the wick! It’s either a dud or a fake, but either way it is no more Grin

OP posts:
CaptainCabinets · 05/02/2019 16:28

There was no way the top was going to melt at the same speed as the centre, it burnt down 3 inches in those 4 hours! So it was almost at the bottom.

I love yankee candles and never had this problem with them? They burn lovely and even and I've not had one that doesn't smell very strongly. Sounds like it might be a fake?

mummmy2017 · 05/02/2019 16:29

You should have cut out the bad bit, added a candle in the middle and reused.

CaptainCabinets · 05/02/2019 16:30

What’s the point in reusing a candle that flies between smelling of nothing and smelling of coal tar Grin

OP posts:
CaptainCabinets · 05/02/2019 16:30

Flits*

I’ll dig it out the bin if anyone wants it Grin

Yankee Candles are rubbish. I got a couple of candles for the DDs from Bed Bath & Beyond for Christmas and they are much better, great in fact. Not sure if BB&B exists in the UK though.

CaptainCabinets · 05/02/2019 16:31

Maybe I should regift it back to the giver 🤭

OP posts:
mummmy2017 · 05/02/2019 16:31

Ok,. Yeah bin it...

Bringbackthestripes · 05/02/2019 16:34

It’s obviously a huge problem as Yankee even have tips to prevent it! Grin

Ask the gifter for the receipt or where it was from as it is clearly faulty.

babycatcher411 · 05/02/2019 16:35

I’ve always been a fan of the big yankee candles because they dont do this, compared to many other large candles.
It’s a shame you’ve had that experience of them because I love most of them.
Some do, however, smell horrendous!

AndSheWas85 · 05/02/2019 16:37

Love my Yankee Candles, I find the tarts (wax melts) are good value and give a good lasting sent, Shea butter is a nice clean scent and Lake sunset for a more dreamy evening scent are my two favs at the moment. But that changes every month. Not keen on anything food scented though.

Tried lots of different brands from the most expensive to the cheapish Yankee candles and always come with varying degrees of success. Was given a present of Jo Malone from a friend who knows I love my candles and was very underwhelmed, by both the scent itself and how much you could actually smell of it

A friend works in Harvy Nics and told me don't go by price, some of the top end candles take literally £5 to make but the markup with a big brand name attached can add huge money.
The Aldil ones are quite nice too, but overall I go with my gut, if it smells good and ain't to pricey, it's going in my basket. Smile

DerelictWreck · 05/02/2019 16:38

In all fairness what did you expect - Yankee Candles are the shittiest, trashiest candles! Can never understand why they are recommended as presents so often on here!
