Bloody Yankee candles

CaptainCabinets · 05/02/2019 16:07

I received a Yankee candle as a gift (meant to be ‘rainbow cookie’ scented, whatever that is!)

I’m partial to a nice candle so I started burning it and it’s tunnelled straight down the middle, leaving an inch of wax either side Angry, it’s black all round the glass and it smells of absolutely nothing.

AIBU to think they’re overpriced tatty shite and I ought to stick to my lovely little cheapies forever more?!

Never had this, not done anything special apart from light it but mine always last for ages and definitely smell strongly. Maybe see if you can return?

Gudgyx · 05/02/2019 16:45

I love scentsy wax bars! Bit overpriced but strong and last a good few days before you need to change it

teraculum29 · 05/02/2019 16:46

My Mil loves yankee candles, always we will have lots from her, but I m not a fan. Mostly they burn half way like OP's one.
And I cannot believe the price of them, it's absolutely overpriced.
I find cheaper ones much better, smell nicer and burn properly. Usually i buy mine in In Excess or Pound Strecher;.

GladAllOver · 05/02/2019 16:47

We used them for a while until we found how dirty they were making the walls and curtains.

pintsizedblondie · 05/02/2019 16:47

When you burn a candle for the first time, you need to burn for ages as this then sets the wax pool. Also get a metal lid for it as it ensures an even burn. Also make sure to trim your wick.

EmeraldShamrock · 05/02/2019 16:49

This has happened to me. It is usually a fault with the wick been to short.
I give the wick a good yank now.
Let it cool, wipe it down and pull the wick string.

EmeraldShamrock · 05/02/2019 16:50

Or cut it should be 7mm.

CoperCabana · 05/02/2019 16:51

If you have a candle in a jar that is used up or not to your taste, you can pour boiling water on the top. This makes the wax rise to the top which you can then easily remove from the jar. Might take a few goes but means you can clean the jar up and use it again, with a different candle in. Or put it in the glass recycling. I had a lovely old jar with a mouldy candle in. I got all the old wax out and have popped a cheap as chips Wilko candle in and it looks fab.

TeeniefaeTroon · 05/02/2019 16:52

Wrap tin foil around the sides or put it in a furry sock (not up to the top) and burn it for a few hours until it levels. Alternatively, put the jar in a pan of boiling water and gently simmer until it's all molten, pour the wax into ice cube trays and use the cubes in a wax warmer instead.

Love a Yankee candle me. Black cherry for winter, icy Blue Spruce for Christmas. I've got a jar topper thing for mine-makes it burn evenly and stops the glass blackening.

MyKingdomForBrie · 05/02/2019 16:55

Send a pic to Yankee candle on their fb page, I bet they'll send you a replacement (just pick a better scent!)

JasperKarat · 05/02/2019 16:56

Was it Yankee 'simply home' that's the budget range they sell and they're dire. Not all of the scents are to my taste but I've never had that issue with burning

OutPinked · 05/02/2019 16:57

This has always happened to be with their medium or large varieties too, I’ve given up on them now entirely as a result. The wick always ended up disappearing entirely. Happens with flamingo candles too.

I just opt for cheap Aldi ones now or Ikea Grin.

manicinsomniac · 05/02/2019 17:01

I am absolutely in love with Yankee candles. Never had a problem with uneven burning and they smell so strongly that I sit and inhale them (unlit!) - it's like crack! Grin

Rainbow Cookie sounds like heaven to me. My favourites are the fruit and candy scented ones, rather than the spiced or planty ones.

Mimithemouse · 05/02/2019 17:03

Why are they trashy? Are people actually snobby about candles now?

babycatcher411 · 05/02/2019 17:05

Sicilian lemon all the way!! But then I love lemon anything!

DorisDances · 05/02/2019 17:05

Always avoid yankee candles due to the lurid smell. White Company every time for me

manicinsomniac · 05/02/2019 17:06

Mimi - people I know in real life think they're crazily expensive. Only on mn could they be seen as cheap and tacky!

brew0andbiscuits · 05/02/2019 17:10

A little hack, because I have no life don't put the lid on (if it's a jar) until all the smoke has stopped and wick has cooled, otherwise the jar will go black. Mine don't burn evenly either so I now scrape the side bits off and put them in the top of my wax melt thingys so you have matching scents and it helps to keep the candle even!

MissTook · 05/02/2019 17:12

I need to stop clicking on these threads - I've just spent £18 on a wax melter and 'tarts.' Shock

cloudtree · 05/02/2019 17:12

I have a couple going at the moment. They melt evenly as long as you do let the first melt cover the entire top of the candle. They had a strong scent when we were given them. Now we've lit them they don't smell of anything much.

Neom or Laura Ashley all the way. Much better scent throw.

oh, they're gross. I can't bear that scented-candle smell. Maybe that makes me a snob. I get brands I know I like (eg Neom) from TK Maxx instead, or ask wealthy relatives for them for xmas - the poncy brands are smaller but they last longer and they don't smell like toilet cleaner.
