Bloody Yankee candles

CaptainCabinets · 05/02/2019 16:07

I received a Yankee candle as a gift (meant to be ‘rainbow cookie’ scented, whatever that is!)

I’m partial to a nice candle so I started burning it and it’s tunnelled straight down the middle, leaving an inch of wax either side Angry, it’s black all round the glass and it smells of absolutely nothing.

AIBU to think they’re overpriced tatty shite and I ought to stick to my lovely little cheapies forever more?!

Mimi yes - threads like these always attract barbed comment from the 'oh I only every pay a billionty pounds my diptyque shite, saw you coming a mile off candle' types

I buy mine in Sainsburys when they are on sale - cheap and perfectly fine

Nottobesoldseparately · 05/02/2019 17:16

I'm not snobby about candles, I just don't like shit ones.
Yankee are shit, overpriced shit, that don't smell particularly nice and leave black soot marks.
There are much nicer ones out there, some cheaper, some more expensive.

CammieKennaway · 05/02/2019 17:29

I love the Yankee Candle wax melts and treated myself to a candle - and was so disappointed - mine also tunneled and didn't smell - I'm sticking to cheaper Air Wick wax melts instead

Don't bin it. Melt the leftover wax by carefully putting the jar in boiling water. Tip the wax into a silicone ice cube mould.
Reuse the jar and when the ice cubes have set use them as drawer fresheners.

Pk37 · 05/02/2019 17:42

I get the wax melts with the heater thing (technical term) and they all smell so nice and quite strong .
I have had a couple of large ones that have been crap and have no scent at all .. even had one that smelt like toothpaste

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 05/02/2019 17:45

Unfortunately, Yankee Candles are pretty well known for being overpriced and cheaply made.

DH and I sold candles for a summer once for fun and we were introduced to Gold Canyon Candles with two wicks so the burn evenly. They are easily the most fantastic candles we have ever tried. They are also hand poured and smell exactly like they are described. I believe the burn 200+ hrs for the large.

They do not currently ship internationally, but you can find them on USA ebay or Amazon. Here's the link below;

Second up, are candles from Bath and Bodyworks. They have 3-wick candles and smell divine! They also burn evenly and smell true to their description although some of their ingredients need to be taken with a sense of humour. For example, we have Salt Flower right now, and the ingredients are, Soft Ocean Air, Coastal Orchids, Golden Sunrays Obviously, no one knows what a golden sun ray is, but I personally think it's cute. It definitely give you the mood of what each candle smells like. Personally, I think they stopped including what essential oils they use because so many were copying them.

They only ship to the US and Canada now, but you should be able to find them on USA ebay or Amazon. Here is their link below.

We have tried some more expensive fancy dancy ones and even made some ourselves, but nothing we have come across in all the years we have been together have topped these two lines.

Good luck! Smile

And, sorry about the shitty candle. Sad

I can't understand their popularity- Yankee candles are absolute shite compared to pretty much every candle ever made.

KitschBitch · 05/02/2019 18:02

Yankee are rubbish! We adore good candles, Woodwick are great, Jo Malone lovely but pricey, Liz Earle are gorgeous too, but my latest favourite are the Aldi ones - received one from a good friend who knows how fussy I am, very impressed. Burns evenly, smells divine in simple, classy glass jar with silver top.

MyGuideJools · 05/02/2019 18:06

Woodwick candles are owned by Yankee

I had a cinnamon Yankee at Xmas, it filled the whole house and burnt evenly. I reckon you have dud.

Imissgmichael · 05/02/2019 18:07

Wearywithteens - “Yankee are crap. Woodwick burn evenly and smell amazing.”

YC own Woodwick.

Iv never had a problem with YC. Love black cherry and Sicilian lemon. I do use their toppers though which are very pretty.

MobMoll · 05/02/2019 18:12

Like another poster suggested I would reach out to the company to complain. I’m not a fan of Yankee Candles either. The store smells terrible. I buy wax melts from Walmart (talk about trashy lol) as they are cheap and cheerful and keep my electric wax burner far away from my toddlers reach. Best candle I’ve ever purchased was from Little House candles. I bought a spiced pear one in December and it still smells amazing, plus it burns clean. However they are sold and made in NJ so that was probably not very helpful of me..

beanaseireann · 05/02/2019 18:13

I never put a lid on my large Yankee candle - Egyptian Musk - it's lovely but the inside of the glass jar went black.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 05/02/2019 18:14

Should read, no one knows what a golden sun ray smells like

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 05/02/2019 18:14

If you sprinkle salt over the top of the candle before lighting it helps it burn evenly

Sugarplumfairy65 · 05/02/2019 18:16

Sounds like it may have been a fake. There are lot of them around. A wholesaler near me was prosecuted a couple of year ask was prosecuted for selling them to retail outlets.

ChristmasFluff · 05/02/2019 18:40

I'm a other one who likes Yankee candles, and I buy them in sales, so they aren't too expensive. I don't do anything to the wick and they've always burned evenly for me.

But the jars definitely go black at the sides even though I never put a lid on. I burn them by the fire, so the only decor that gets black are the fireplace and surround, which would have got black from the fire anyway.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 05/02/2019 18:46

Love them. Have 2 big jars on the go and never had a problem. The wax melts are good for filling the house with scent
Obviously not all the scents are to everyone's taste, dd has a penchant for some of the really sweet ones that I don't like.
Had some posho candles as a gift from either JL or HN which smelt of precisely nothing. Total rip off.
As is anything made by No Malone (pun intended) All their products have the biggest mark up in history and are very average with a fancy schmancy box.
Liz Earle candles are nice as well.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 05/02/2019 19:01

I like Stoneglow. Very reasonably priced and they smell divine, like fresh woodland air. I’m no longer a lover of Yankee, they’re quite artificial and I have an aversion to all the Christmassy scented ones that garden centres reek of all December. As for those crackling things - just why?

theharlotletter · 05/02/2019 19:16

Can't bear Yankee Candles, they smell so strong and synthetic and make my throat itch. I associate them with brown pleather sofas and twinkly twigs in a big vase.

I can highly recommend candles by Melt they smell divine and are much cheaper than Neon or TWC.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 05/02/2019 19:55

I've had probably a good 10-15 Yankee Candles in my lifetime, purchased from the Yankee Candle store, and compared to those I've mentioned above, they are shit. The scent is strong at first, then you can't smell anything. They get sooty. They don't burn evenly. And, they don't smell like they should. They also burn rather quickly compared to BBW or GC. I do not think they even use essential oils, I think their synthetic. Even if they do, use essential oils, it must only be on the top and not throughout. I will never buy a Yankee candle again.

4BabyJoseph · 21/02/2019 07:19

I gave up on Yankee ages ago. I find there are cheaper candles which are so much better. For the time being I'm not even using wax melts, I found a little company called aCorkee who do scented crystals because they're just as good if not better and I don't have to scrape out wax afterwards.
I always used to end up throwing some (a lot) of the Yankee away afterwards
