AIBU to ask what the hell is this we've inherited

My Dsis & I have just been going through some boxes our dad sent over mostly bits from our nan who was a big collector.
Most things are identifiable but what the hell is this?
I'm going for a weird chamber pot or maybe store flour? You wouldn't want to muddle the two up though Envy

It looks like what they used to call a salt pig. You'd keep your kitchen salt in it.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 02/02/2019 14:11

As pp said, a salt pig!

Wingedharpy · 02/02/2019 14:12

It looks like an earthenware salt pig to me.

Flyingdaisy · 02/02/2019 14:12

For cooking salt, also for filling salt pots from.

DeadBod · 02/02/2019 14:15

I think Ainsley Harriot had one of these in his kitchen on his cookery programme today. I remember wondering if it's kept out all the time and if so, did the salt get damp.

Wingedharpy · 02/02/2019 14:20

Apparently, DeadBod, the unglazed interior helps to stop the salt getting damp.
How well that works in reality, I couldn't say.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 02/02/2019 14:21

How would you use that as a chamber pot?

OhDearHowSadNeverMind · 02/02/2019 14:23

eBay it. £25 upwards!

Wingedharpy · 02/02/2019 14:26

A man/boy with a good aim could, WhoGivesADamn.
It would rule out all the males in the Wingedharpy household though!

Sickoffamilydrama · 02/02/2019 14:26

I was thinking a man's chamber potGrin
But yes I remember now. I have another for you all.
I seem to remember this heats sauces/brandy? I've tried rubbing it sadly no genie.

Crikey! I'd love that, it would go in my kitchen beautifully. I am still using the kilner jar DH dug out of our last houses midden!

PositivelyPERF · 02/02/2019 14:32

Oh I love that. I can imagine it sitting on the table, keeping the gravy boat warm, at Xmas.

How big is the salt pig? Would you be able to keep your spuds in it?

I’m so jealous of you right now. We have an amazing cafe nearby that sells reproduction antique kitchen wear, like those. Very expensive, but obviously sells well, as she’s doing very well.

willowmelangell · 02/02/2019 14:34

The lamp is for warming brandy in its glass.
Any more items?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/02/2019 14:34

Sorry, not that! That does look like a snifter warmer Smile

Sickoffamilydrama · 02/02/2019 14:40

I'm keeping these as they are adorable 😍
My Dsis was saying our nan left Wales at 14 to be a chamber maid and work in a big house. Between her and my grandfather who was a London barrow boy they set up their own business and became rich enough to send their sons to private school.
We wondered if she saw these items in the big house and took them as a mark of success and that's why she collected so much. Her silver collection was massive.

What's the bell for on the brandy warmer? To tell someone it's ready?

EBearhug · 02/02/2019 14:45

To snuff the wick once you've finished warming the brandy?

ineedaholidaynow · 02/02/2019 14:45

Something, I thought that would be used to snuff out the wick

Wingedharpy · 02/02/2019 14:48

I don't think it's a bell SWL, but a snuffer, to snuff out the flame when brandy is sufficiently warmed.
I think I would have liked your Nan OP.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/02/2019 14:49

OMG! Strawberry sugar sifters. Lovely. I could really covet those Smile

Mumsnut · 02/02/2019 14:52

I think the lamp thin is a port decanting cradle. The flame allows the sediimnt to be seen

endofthelinefinally · 02/02/2019 14:54

Get the silver valued and insured.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/02/2019 14:55

I thought of that too but thought that the prongs don't look wide enough to cradle the bottle width. That and it would tilt the contents towards the neck, which you need to avoid with sediment!

Or do you just do it with the lees of a bottle? In which case that would make sense!

Maybe OP could tell us if the wider cradle is bottle or glass sized....

cindersrella · 02/02/2019 14:56

Looks to me like a peee bottle.
Second a red wine bottle holder

cindersrella · 02/02/2019 14:57

Rd look like salt and pepper pots
