Toddler has been sick 14 times in 5 hours!!

I don’t know what to do, I’ve never experienced sickness like this - it’s been relentless every 15 minutes or so right throughout the night my 2yro dd is exhausted and so unwell with it all.

I’ve called 111 and gp gave me a ring back and believes she has a tummy bug of some kind and to keep encouraging fluids throughout the next 24 hours or so. AIBU to be so concerned now to ring them back? Or even take her to A&E?! I know I probably should steer clear with risk to others if it is a bug but I’m starting to feel really frightened by all the bile that’s coming out of her. She’s lying here next to me awake but she’s just all floppy and vacant (other than when she’s being sick). Should I just keep monitoring? I don’t know what my instincts are telling me to do

I have no experience, but I would certainly ring back if not responsive - that’s the thing the HV has always said to me to be aware of.

Don’t feel like you’re making a fuss, you know your child. If this feels wrong, then do what you need to do to get reassurance. Sorry you’re going through this

Has she managed to keep any fluids down?

If not I'd be inclined to take her to a&e, she might need help rehydrating.

Hope she's feeling better soon, it's horrible watching them like this!

How long ago did you speak to the Gp? Has the symptoms got worse or is she responding less than before? If she is worse or your still worried call 111 again. Did the doctor say when you should be taking her to AandE?

Have you checked her temperature? And has she managed any fluids?
Honestly, I'd trust my instincts if I were you. Hope she picks up soon.

Ah that is really tough. If it was me, I'd give 111 another call and state that she's been sick that many times.
It is a worry but I'm sure she's weak because she has nothing inside her so lacking in energy. But definitely give them a call and see what they suggest.

I was very sick a few years ago and 111 told me to go to my local community hospital and I then got told off for going there. Not what I wanted to hear when I was feeling so weak and crap. But I did quite agree with them and stated that I only went in because I was listening to what 111 told me. It may be different with children though.

Do you have a DP who can go and get you anything you may need?

Keep up with the fluids even if they do keep coming up..it will help.

Is she showing signs of dehydration? Dry mouth with white tongue, faster than normal breathing, passing no urine?

My daughter who is 3, is a regular at hospital due to ongoing issues but she was admitted with a sick bug back in Oct.

We were giving 5mls of dioralyte every 5mins and she wasn't keeping that down & hadn't kept anything down for 24 hours. She needed IV fluids & glucose to get her sugar levels back up. If she will drink anything, give her fruit juice for sugar or if you have dioralyte give that (I appreciate this isn't something everyone has at home)

If she is showing signs of dehydration & still vomitting you should get her seen.

Floppy and vacant would worry me. Vomiting every 15minutes would mean it's very unlikely that she's been able to retain any fluids. If she's unresponsive she might not swallow well, so it may not be safe to give her a drink, either.

I would be constantly dripping water in her mouth with a clean paintbrush or a corner of a facecloth. Tiny drips, not enough that she has to swallow.

My 4 year old had this bug a few weeks back. Vomiting only lasted 24 hours but was a long 24 hours. Was every 30mins. Get some dioralyte this morning to help replace fluids. Keep an eye out for lethargy, sunken eyes, very slow capillary refill and a dry sticky mouth. Hope it passes soon

Take her to a&e. I had a similar experience a few years ago when DD was about 2. She kept being sick, it was the weekend. I rang to get emergency Dr appt. Said get so.e fluids into her. Tried but she kept being sick. Ever time I rang NHS line they would make me wait 45 mins for call back. Mil is a retired hc worker and insisted we took her to a&e. Have never been so glad I listened. They reckon if we'd waited longer she would have fallen into a hyperglycemic coma. DD had to be put on a drip and stay over 24hrs.

I was soo cross to have not been taken more seriously earlier. If I was in your shoes I'd go straight in.

It’s been a couple of hours now since gp rang and she’s been sick 5 more times but other than that things haven’t changed so I don’t know what I’d say if I rang 111 again. I think they might think I’m being a bit ott but I’ve a 6yro ds too so I’m more than aquainted with sickness bugs but have never seen anything like this! She’s semi-dozing on me at the mo quite clammy even with nothing on her other than her nappy - which has been bone dry since 10pm. Is it too soon to judge? I’ve been advised to see how the rest of the morning goes and to get her to drink (she won’t even accept a drop at the mo) feeling super edgy - probably sleep deprevation isn’t helping!

I have dioralyte, have only tried her with water so far (with no luck) so I’m going to go make some up now and attempt to feed her small drops with a calpol syringe. I think if no success or she’s sick afterwards I going to have to make a decision one way or another!

Only you can judge 100% as we can't see her but go with your gut.

She sounds very poorly from what you have said so I don't think it would be unreasonable for you to get her seen.

She is very young so it's better to be safe than sorry.

I'd gauge it on responsiveness when awake & likelihood of getting more fluids into her in the next few hours.

5mls of dioralyte every 5minutes is what they say to do at hospital. We also syringe it in slowly & into her cheek. Hope it works!

Too soon to judge nappy I think. Happened to us recently and was mid afternoon before a wee happened. Tiny sips of water. Really baby her, keep fluid tiny but constant

OP I could have written this post. Started at midnight and she’s been sick every 15 minutes since- I didn’t realise until an hour ago but she had shat the bed too. Just chucked her in the bath and she’s had diarrhoea 2ce since then. Keep an eye on the pee if she’s peeing in a potty maybe don’t get rid of it so you can tell exactly how much fluid is coming out

I'd give it an hour or so and keep trying to get rehydration water/fluids into her, but I would definitely give 111/GP a ring back - the dry nappy for 12 hours would concern me slightly, as would the bile and floppy/vacant (may just be that she is exhausted if she's had a rough night, but our GP has always told me to be aware of "off" behaviour). Hope she feels better soon.

when son had a very nasty virus the doctor sent us in he was just very odd he was 5 but didn't speak , wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink much just lay flopping about and crying. The doctor said he thought was nasty virus but wanted observed so we went and the hospital doctor did full assessment and they gave Apple juice and diorralite it did start to perk him up but he didn't have sickness so I don't know if your little one could tolerate but the sugar and salt did hekp. I would get her seen either at Gp or walk in or of you think she needs to go to hospital take her in.She is your child and you know if she is not right. Hope she feels better soon

Hi OP, I am a GP. I don't usually comment on threads like this. However, if your DD is floppy & unresponsive between vomits, please take her to A&E. She will probably perk up on the way (they usually do ) but no one will judge you. It is better to be safe than sorry.

I hope she is on the mend soon

take her to hospital. I had it when one of mine was just 2. she was on a drip of for 2 days. dehydration can be really dangerous. It's a toddler after all.

My daughter was like this at 1.5, vomiting constantly and not keeping fluids down. I think you should take her to A and E.

111 sent us to out of hours GP, who sent us to A and E, by which point she was at 14 vomits. We had to do a fluid challenge there (5 ml diarolyte every 5 min), after she vomited the 3rd time there she was admitted. She was so dehydrated it took them 4 goes to get the cannula in, which was incredibly distressing - and why I'd go sooner rather than later.

We ended up having to stay 2 nights - a nurse told me dehydration is much more serious in young children.

get her to a doctor asap
this happened to my son and he needed a drip

if you can get her to a gp/out of hours first, they will send you straight to the children's ward hopefully
if no luck getting to see a dr, straight to a and e

floppy and vacant is not good

Call 111 back immediately. Children can dehydrate very quickly. Do you have any ice pops she can suck for s little energy and fluid. If she’s being sick so often water will just keep coming up.
You could also go to gp but call ahead so they can pop you in isolation. Gp if worried can send you to a & e with letter so you’re not waiting around for hours.
Poor thing must be exhausted and scared.
I really hope this helps.

Ps , I’ve been to a & e before and told my son had a virus. He actually had pneominia! So if your worried still tell them so x
