Poor dd2 drew the short straw and has the tiniest box room in the world. We’ve been here 5 years and I’m currently in the process of binning/donating pretty much all the stuff she had that she never plays with (12 bin bags and counting!).

She refuses to sleep in her high up bed anymore because she once saw a spider (she’s being assessed for ASD and gets a bed in her bonnet about stuff) , so at her request I’ve now bought her a day bed, which has drawers and a pull out trundle underneath. So the big bed is going which is going to create a storage nightmare.

She still has a fuck ton of stuff she claims she can’t part with which is in my room at the moment. Toys, organised into big storage boxes, books, games, the biggest hamster cage in the world, sparkly bags and all that shit. Currently her clothes are not in her room and I can’t see that changing. Where the feck am I going to put all this stuff?

I’ve included a pic so you can see my problem. Please don’t judge the mess (it’s a work in progress!) or the hideous pink walls (she chose them a few years ago and they’re going).

Please share any box room storage miracles that you have!

Will still put the shelf from jojomamanbebe on the wall on the other side of the bed as it will be handy to keep books and iPad there.

That looks gorgeous! I'm so jealous haha

DustyMaiden · 29/01/2019 07:56

The ikea kallax comes in many sizes and stores loads. I’m decorating my box room so have had to empty mine. DH was amazed at the contents.

crumpet · 29/01/2019 08:03

Can’t you get a carpenter to build a bed base, with shelves/storage at one end if the mattress falls short of the full length, and then room for storage under?

misstakenone · 29/01/2019 09:25

How much space is there between the end of the bed and the wall? we have the narrow billy book case shelves at the end of my ds bed and it holds loads of stuff. Then have trofast over the top of the bed at the other end. Keeps so much clutter away!
Scallywags are also good for small storage beds. We have the 2'6 captains bed which has sliding doors at the bottom so can fit loads of the IKEA kallax boxes underneath

OP, we have a box room and although no DC yet this is giving me all the inspiration. It looks great! Would love to see a finished photo. I think the colours work really well too. Well done!

heymammy · 29/01/2019 20:12

This might be £££ but have you thought about swapping the wide radiator from a narrow tall one instead? That would free up some space against that wall. My ex-p did this in his new house and it really helped with the layout/fitting the furniture in.

Islands81 · 29/01/2019 20:23

Thanks @RavenLG.

And it’s a rented house (HA) so don’t want to start changing the radiators about. There’s going to be furniture all along the right wall so I don’t mind keeping the left wall quite empty so it doesn’t look too cramped.

Any progress?😃

Islands81 · 31/01/2019 15:10

It’s been a bit of a slow couple of days as I found out a friend had died suddenly, so not really been in a good frame of mind.

But cracked on this morning and finished the drawers on the wardrobe, and built the box for the hamster to go on. Also made the kallax and the wall cabinet, but having a bit of a nightmare working out what kind of wall fixings to use. Ikea’s helpline was not very helpful!

@Islands81 maybe ask in B&Q? I had the same trouble with Ikea and the guy at B&Q helped me out 😊

Can't wait to see it finished!

Islands81 · 31/01/2019 16:04

Think we’ve sussed it out now, will go to screwfix tomorrow as long as I’m not snowed in!

I would get a daylight bulb as the room will look much cleaner than the warm tinted yellow bulbs.

Iggi999 · 31/01/2019 18:56

Is that wardrobe with drawers one unit? Do you remember what it’s called? It’s nice

Islands81 · 31/01/2019 20:52

It’s two units that can be joined together. It’s called stuva from ikea.

Thanks!

Riversguidebook · 01/02/2019 14:43

Whatever colour you paint the room, whatever style textiles and decor, none of it will look nice unless you get the light sorted

That’s a small window, and standard central ceiling light or lamps won’t make a difference to overall ambience, unless you always want small and cosy.

Have you thought about investing in spot lighting or at the least daylight bulbs?
Angling spots to highlight edges can make a room appear bigger.

As can mirror tiling an entire wall, or a trompe loeil mural.

Will invest in a daylight bulb, although dd tends to be using her little lamp more than the overhead light.

Snowed in today so getting fixings for the wall cabinets and getting the socket removed is on hold. Sledging and pub instead!

Oh I love this thread! Baby DS has the box room and I've been wondering what on earth I'll do it with it as he grows. So many great ideas on here.

Well done OP, looks fab so far! Love that wardrobe.

RCohle · 01/02/2019 16:04

I think it looks fab OP - whether or not you decide to change the lightbulb.

Islands81 · 01/02/2019 16:29

Thanks all, have had a big chest of drawers in the hallway for years with all dd’s Clothes in, so it will be great to get rid of that and have a hallway back again. It’s been a good opportunity for a clothes sort out too while I’ve been moving them over.
