Poor dd2 drew the short straw and has the tiniest box room in the world. We’ve been here 5 years and I’m currently in the process of binning/donating pretty much all the stuff she had that she never plays with (12 bin bags and counting!).

She refuses to sleep in her high up bed anymore because she once saw a spider (she’s being assessed for ASD and gets a bed in her bonnet about stuff) , so at her request I’ve now bought her a day bed, which has drawers and a pull out trundle underneath. So the big bed is going which is going to create a storage nightmare.

She still has a fuck ton of stuff she claims she can’t part with which is in my room at the moment. Toys, organised into big storage boxes, books, games, the biggest hamster cage in the world, sparkly bags and all that shit. Currently her clothes are not in her room and I can’t see that changing. Where the feck am I going to put all this stuff?

I’ve included a pic so you can see my problem. Please don’t judge the mess (it’s a work in progress!) or the hideous pink walls (she chose them a few years ago and they’re going).

Please share any box room storage miracles that you have!

I would love to see a pic @franciscrawford, but totally understand if you don’t want to post one. Dd is quite excited about the trundle for sleepovers (which happen about twice a year as she doesn’t have many friends).

I would get a carpenter to build a "wall" of shelves over the bed tbh. So like Ikea kallax with space chopped out for the bed.

wildbhoysmama · 14/01/2019 23:37

It's so hard, I feel your pain. DS3 has our box room. Thankfully most of his toys are in two Ikea storage things ( the ones with the boxes that come in and out) in his brothers' room, which is pretty big.

I gutted his room last spring and managed to get quite a bit in. He has a midi bed ( with softies in the wee den under the bed) but that could easily be your new daybed as same size 200cm mattress. I'll post a pic tomorrow- when I work out how to fecking download from the bastarding cloud!

StatisticallyChallenged · 14/01/2019 23:38

Could you put wall units along the wall above the bed? like this

We have some above DD's sofa bed (actually ikea kitchen units but with a neutral looking door) which we took right to the ceiling. Not all her stuff in the highest ones but creates some decent storage even at the lower levels for her stuff.

Islands81 · 14/01/2019 23:38

Stair bulkhead is the other side of the wall on the side where her bed is.

My ds room is 6ft by 10ft..........have you measured up ?? A.divan bed will.probably fit under the window.

Islands81 · 14/01/2019 23:42

I like the look of those units @StatisticallyChallenged. I might be able to lose the billies if i had something like that.

What is above the bulkhead? Could it be used for her storage? Would it be better incorporated into her room?

Sammy867 · 14/01/2019 23:47

to be honest there are a few things I would do to make the room seem bigger if I could.

  1. repaint to a lighter shade. I think the bright colours make rooms appear smaller. a lighter pink would make it seem more open. or alternatively a more grown up soft grey or lilac.
  1. change the highsleeper to normal bed which lifts up for storage underneath like a divan. I'd put it along the right wall (looking at your photo) but underneath the window. Id also get it as a small single or euro single rather than a standard single.
I would then get a small desk and place this beside the bed in the left corner from your photo under the window
  1. I'd put a soft toy net up in the corner. you can buy netting that hangs from the ceiling that all the soft toys can sit in. you don't have to get rid of them but if they're not played with at least they're off the floor.
  1. put shelves on the wall where the bookcase is which would now be above the small desk. Id go for the kallax style shelves so books can sit in here.
  1. in the bottom right corner (where the head of the bed is now closest to you taking the photo) I'd get a single kallax unit in white and place the 4 boxes in there too. The top can be used as a kind of dresser
Islands81 · 14/01/2019 23:47

@babyshark well bugger me! I’ve just measured under the window and it’s actually 6’5” (ish - my measuring tape was only 6 foot). I’ve always looked at the width and thought there’s no way a bed would fit there.

Kinda wish I hadn’t just bought an ikea day bed now!

Could you move the radiator to the wall space next to the window, and get one of those tall radiators? That would free up the space where the radiator is for slimline storage?

crimsonlake · 14/01/2019 23:50

Beds under the window always make a box room bigger and then you have more floor space to work with. However you say it is not doable. Lots of shelves and wall mounted cupboards and look on Pinterest for small room ideas.

PeaQiwiComHequo · 14/01/2019 23:52

Stair bulkhead is the other side of the wall on the side where her bed is.

ah ha! so does this mean you have access to a way of extending her bedroom into the unused double-height clearance over the lower part of the stairs?

imagine knocking down the wall between this bedroom and the staircase. now you need to keep the triangle of wall encasing the top part of the staircase but you have a triangle wedge extra in the bedroom. if I understand correctly that should give you an extra metre of room width over by the window to have a decent length of bed (might have to be slightly elevated eg waist-high but not "high up")

Enko · 14/01/2019 23:53

Have a look at the futon company They have many things that can be used in loads of different ways. Might help make it look tidier and nicer.

SimplyPut · 14/01/2019 23:54

If it's the difference of a few cm I would consider removing skirting board to fit bed under the window.

Islands81 · 14/01/2019 23:54

You lot are amazing. I could get this bed instead (will be the third new bed I’ve bought her in the last few weeks Grin). Does all the things the other one does, just a lot shorter.

This looks the same shape as my DS box room. We've just had wall mounted cupboards on the right wall above the bed, made by a joiner and it has made a world of difference for storage.

Also google " tiny house small spaces" some great ideas there too

StarUtopia · 14/01/2019 23:56

Your room is large! My son's box room won't even fit a single bed in lengthways, and that's literally all that can fit in there.

Bed under the window instead and this room is huge!

timetostepup · 14/01/2019 23:57

The IKEA hemnes bed is 200cm - so that's 6'7''.

There's no way it could be 6'7" is there? Worth measuring exactly maybe? (And we'll all keep our fingers and toes crossed!)

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 14/01/2019 23:57

One of these on the door holds a lot of toys without taking up any floor space, and still giving them easy access:

Peepingsnowdrops · 14/01/2019 23:57

I came on to say try ikea trones.
They are quite clutter free looking (sorry for silly explantation) and hold a lot of the smaller stuff. Absolutely love them
