Poor dd2 drew the short straw and has the tiniest box room in the world. We’ve been here 5 years and I’m currently in the process of binning/donating pretty much all the stuff she had that she never plays with (12 bin bags and counting!).

She refuses to sleep in her high up bed anymore because she once saw a spider (she’s being assessed for ASD and gets a bed in her bonnet about stuff) , so at her request I’ve now bought her a day bed, which has drawers and a pull out trundle underneath. So the big bed is going which is going to create a storage nightmare.

She still has a fuck ton of stuff she claims she can’t part with which is in my room at the moment. Toys, organised into big storage boxes, books, games, the biggest hamster cage in the world, sparkly bags and all that shit. Currently her clothes are not in her room and I can’t see that changing. Where the feck am I going to put all this stuff?

I’ve included a pic so you can see my problem. Please don’t judge the mess (it’s a work in progress!) or the hideous pink walls (she chose them a few years ago and they’re going).

Please share any box room storage miracles that you have!

Oh my goodness I LOVE THIS THREAD. Room looks fab, love the blind, thanks for the pics.

Grabs popcorn takes a seat.

Drogosnextwife · 27/01/2019 19:30

eandh

I was looking at your pic thinking ooh I like that grey, turns out it's the same as I have in my hall bit it looks nothing like that. I've had that on here before. Mine looks a lilac colour!

Islands81 · 27/01/2019 20:03

Bit more progress (still suffering from the lurgy so had to have a snooze after getting back from IKEA).

Turns out hanging wardrobe doors on your own is quite tricky. I was not going to be beaten though! Also there’s a few chips in the blue which is annoying, didn’t notice until I’d already hung one of them. I’d take them back but don’t know if I can face ANOTHER trip to ikea just at the moment (it’s quite far!).

Love the colours together!

Islands81 · 27/01/2019 20:51

It looks ok doesn’t it? All that panicking for nothing Grin

Great ideas but wonder why this is in AIBU ?

CosyToast · 27/01/2019 21:19

I love the pink and blue! I think that makes a lovely girls room 😍 forgive me if you've already said what you're doing (I have read the full thread haha I hope I haven't missed anything!) but I would suggest shallow shelves or your spice rack book shelves at the foot end of the bed where there is a gap. I used to have a box room and I had shelves at the foot of my bed, I used them as a kind of bedside table, plus they were perfect for propping up my iPad so I could nest up and watch movies. So cosy! I think a box room done well can be lovely, it looks like you're on to a winner!

Islands81 · 27/01/2019 21:34

Yes I’m wondering what to do with that space. At the moment the enormous fold out gymnastics mat is there - it’s been floating around the house with nowhere to live for about 4 years now and getting in the way, so imagine my joy when I realised it fitted perfectly in that gap! I may rethink that though, I’ve just bunged it there for now.

RandomMess · 27/01/2019 21:35

The good news eventually said child gets too tall and into advanced tumbles that said tumble mat can no longer be used and it has to be sold GrinWink

firsttimebabybirther · 27/01/2019 21:48

I am hooked on this thread op! The room looks so lovely and a lot bigger in the last pic. Yay! go you! Grin

Islands81 · 27/01/2019 21:49

I really can’t wait for that! She hardly uses it anymore, but it’s a really thick one so will come in handy to use for sleepovers.

Thanks @firsttime. It’s like an interactive episode of Changing Rooms Grin

CosyToast · 27/01/2019 22:05

As long as you leave a bit of room before the shelves start you should still be able to get your mat in and out! I appreciate a convenient fit too 😂 another option could be mounting some hooks? Or one of those soft toy hammocks? It's looking fab!

Islands81 · 27/01/2019 22:15

Think I will put the racks behind the door as that’s just completely wasted space otherwise. For the 3 bits of wall around dd’s bed I have some floating shelves and a wall cabinet...not sure where I’m going to put what yet. Also have a big hangy thing covered in rosettes that needs to go somewhere and quite a big rectangular canvas.

RandomMess · 27/01/2019 22:31

Those mats are like rock!!! Carpet will be softer Grin

RCohle · 27/01/2019 22:56

It looks lovely OP, well done!

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 27/01/2019 23:05

You might try getting her the Marie Kondo manga book (tidyingup in comic book form). If she decides to have a lot less stuff, that would obviously help. I don't know how her SN would affect that, but wondered if she might be keen if she really felt she was driving the clear out?

I know parents getting rid of stuff secretly can cause problems later for kids who have hoarding tendencies.

Toottootcar · 27/01/2019 23:17

I’m hoping the kallax on the wall above the hamster will be really REALLY securely put up...

Islands81 · 28/01/2019 00:37

@Downtheroad she was surprisingly good at getting rid of stuff, I must have cleared out at least 20 bin bags full of stuff for charity/bin. As things are going back in I’ll get her to have another think about whether she REALLY wants to keep certain things. But looking at the heap of stuff and knowing the storage we’ll have, I think it will be ok. I am a Kondo fan (although haven’t really managed to implement it myself beyond my sock draw), and I was trying to get her to think about only keeping things which made her feel happy. Not sure she really got it though Grin

OP posts:
Islands81 · 28/01/2019 00:38

Don’t worry @toottootcar, the hamster will be safe!

Not read tft as I have just seen the time!

But in the 4 pages I have read, nobody has suggested sleep kings for a custom sized bed yet.
Give them a Google. Through website or eBay.

My neighbour has a bed from them for her ds. In a room 5 foot by 6 foot.
Ds is about 5 foot 7. So they opted for a long narrow bed.
They were looking at a 5 foot bed under the window. But ds had a growth spurt before they ordered it.

heymammy · 28/01/2019 19:10

I'm loving that pink paint Islands do you mind telling me what colour/brand it is? And do you know if it's available without the glitter Grin

Loving the thread, the room looks great and you're a legend fitting wardrobe doors single handedly!

Islands81 · 28/01/2019 20:06

Thanks @heymammy, just cooked a roast now I’m trying to muster the energy to put some drawers in the other side.

The paint is indeed available without the glitter, this is is:

www.diy.com/departments/goodhome-walls-ceilings-kyoto-matt-emulsion-paint-2-5l/3663602414629_BQ.prd?utm_source=google_cpc&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=PX_GSC_Catch_All&ppc_type=shopping&ds_kids=92700039926304845&gclid=Cj0KCQiA7briBRD7ARIsABhX8aCfAEEBj1DgyCsLUfumRmjN4K0S0e0V-5us9_rYEjX4x5cVCd3HlhcaAgnoEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Exactly the same as the glittery version just without the bag of glitter and £3 cheaper. I really like it too now, it’s grown on me!

And I’ve just measured the gap between the bed and the radiator thinking maybe I could get a little bedside table in there, she’s always wanted a bedside table but never been able to have one. And then found this on eBay which will fit perfectly in the gap Smile. It is tiny but another couple of handy storage places for little gizmos, and she can put her echo dot on top.
