To feel a bit scared to use an electric blanket?

AspieT · 08/01/2019 20:34

I've been feeling really cold and DH feels really hot. I've been thinking of getting an electric blanket but I'm afraid about using it due to safety concerns. Am I being silly?

Have you tried wearing socks / robe etc to bed first? What tog is your duvet? What has your DH done to feel less hot?

FascinatingCarrot · 08/01/2019 20:38

YABVVVU. Get a dual control. They are safe as houses - cut out, timed, quick 5 min heat etc settings.
You will thank me.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 08/01/2019 20:41

Electric blankets mean you can heat up the bed before you get into it, then you knock it off once you’re ready for sleeping.

I don’t leave mine on all night- I did it once accidentally and I woke up in a pool of sweat Envy< not envy

TakenForSlanted · 08/01/2019 20:42

Not silly at all, actually.

This is going to out me to anyone who knows me IRL but, FWIW, my claim to heroism in this life is preventing a hotel fire by literally throwing a smouldering mattress off a balcony before things escalated.

Three hours earlier I'd been assured by housekeeping that it was most definitely perfectly safe to sleep on it while it was switched on.

Perfectly safe my arse!

Bebe03 · 08/01/2019 20:43

They are very safe, you can time them & they are so cosy! 100% recommend- main causes of fires includes plug in air fresheners & appliances like tumble dryers & washing machines which most turn on before going to bed/ going out!

Eifla · 08/01/2019 20:43

YABU. They’re heavenly.

Ijustwanttofeelbeautiful · 08/01/2019 20:44

Taken hope no one was hurt!

YANBU, they’re not really the safest things.

Ggirl27 · 08/01/2019 20:45

They are the best things since sliced bread. I love mine

Hadjab · 08/01/2019 20:46

I wouldn’t be without mine! I turn it on for 30 mins prior to bed, then switch it off when I get in.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 08/01/2019 20:46

i love mine, although it's only been on once so far this year!! It's not been cold enough to tempt me up two flights of stairs to switch it on half and hour before bed.

Also I am "that age" so seem to be keeping myself quite warm enough mostly. Hmm

JudasPrudy · 08/01/2019 20:47

I've always been scared to use one in case I accidentally pee the bed and get electrocuted Blush

MsFenellaFielding · 08/01/2019 20:48

I haven't one in my bed but recently bought an electric overblanket for when getting comfy in the evening.

I love it so much and so does the dog who buried herself under and you hear her sighs of delight.

I'm getting one for bed RIGHT NOW!

MissWilmottsGhost · 08/01/2019 20:50

I am sat in bed with my half switched on. It is so toasty warm and snuggly Smile

Like pp, I switch it on before I get in then turn it off before going to sleep.

DH rarely gets cold, but I'm freezing in bed for half the year. We succumbed last winter when it was snowy and wished we had thought of it years ago.

it's also great when you want throw the covers off type sex Wink

Lululemonade · 08/01/2019 20:50

My electric blanket changed my life! It is amazing. We live in a Victorian terrace and our bedroom is always cold and draughty.
Getting into bed is such a treat now! Get one, you won’t regret it

Roussette · 08/01/2019 20:50

I've had one for decades (yes really!) and the technology on them now with automatic cut out etc means they are perfectly safe. I can't cope without mine when it's cold.

Tika77 · 08/01/2019 20:53

When I’m cold I put a blanket under the duvet, you can make a really nice coccoon. If you’re still cold, you can put another blanket under your bedhseet as well.

RedPandaFluff · 08/01/2019 20:53

Oh get a dual control blanket, they are BLISSFUL! Although DH laughs at me because I have it on at the highest settings, which brands stripes down my body 😄

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/01/2019 20:55

I'll.just leave this here...

MsFenellaFielding · 08/01/2019 20:57

I think I would really like one of those giant electric slipper foot things. They look GREAT.

Wallywobbles · 08/01/2019 21:01

I've had one for 37 years. When DSM married DDad she came with these. Life changers. Mine cuts off after an hour (depending on timer setting). I fall asleep as soon as I get to the correct temp.

frogsbreath · 08/01/2019 21:15

I love mine, I can warm the bed up and fall asleep with it on when I have a pain flare up. Automatic control switches it off.

For ds we do the blanket under the sheet thing, does keep him cosy if that may be an alternative idea?

ShortandSweet96 · 08/01/2019 21:16

I absolutely swear by mine! I'm 22 and all my friend think I'm a right oldie though! It's amazing, I the winter, out it under the fitted sheet, when you go for a shower or bath stick it on and by the time you come out it feels like someone has jumped in and warmed it up for you!

theycallmebabydriver · 08/01/2019 21:19

Beware falling asleep with it on when you've had a few, you will wake up mummified with a hangover that will make you beg to be put out of your misery with a rock

GetRid · 08/01/2019 21:22

I think they have different technology now which means they cut out if overly hot. Not like the old ones.

You will not regret getting one

TakenForSlanted · 08/01/2019 21:30

In all fairness and possibly in defense of current day electric blankets: the one that nearly burned my bed down wasn't new even a decade ago, so there's that.
