To feel a bit scared to use an electric blanket?

AspieT · 08/01/2019 20:34

I've been feeling really cold and DH feels really hot. I've been thinking of getting an electric blanket but I'm afraid about using it due to safety concerns. Am I being silly?

Just make sure you have dual control and a timer on it , that way you can set your own side temperature and it turns itself off.
I think we had ours from argos similar to this

So nice to get into a warm bed

Poshjock · 08/01/2019 21:48

I have had mine for donkey's years. Always used one, my mum was a fan but she was very careful, never took it off the bed so the wires wouldn't kink, put it on an hour before bed-time and unplugged it before I got into bed. I've kept that habit going. I have a single on our double bed (DH doesn't need one) and in the cold months if I need it I either put it on an hour before bed time or else I set it on a timer switch.

That said, I, too, am at an age where I have my own internal furnace that keeps me way too warm (about 6 times a night)

I couldn't live without mine! I literally cried a couple of years ago on holidays in Scotland because the first hotel we stayed in had one but the next two didn't and I was freezing and in agony (fibro) now mine comes too wherever we go much to dhs embarrassment. It really helps ease my pain but cuts off shortly after I get in so I don't combust

@Poshjock - an hour!? Mine only needs 10 minutes to heat up!

OP - they are awesome. Get one and switch it off before you get in.

twilightcafe · 08/01/2019 21:55

Thanks for reminding me to switch mine on. My cat will thank me. She loves a snuggle in bed if she knows the bed is toasty. Grin

LittleLongDog · 08/01/2019 21:57

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine ShockShockShock

RayRayBidet · 08/01/2019 21:58

They are lovely. My sister lives in a freezing cottage in the middle of nowhere and has them. Tbh without them you wouldn't be able to sleep in her house.
You put it on before you go to bed then turn it off before you go to sleep. Heavenly.

Oysterbabe · 08/01/2019 22:02

It's the best thing I've ever owned. I get alexa to turn it on just before I go up. It's like climbing into a warm bath, heavenly.

zucchinieggplant · 08/01/2019 22:29

I'll never forget arriving at my friends house after a high school dance to see his house on fire - all due to an electric blanket which had been left on. He lost everything. This was 20 yrs ago but I just wouldn't be able to have one in my house, ever. Sad

Believeitornot · 08/01/2019 22:30

Get a hot water bottle instead.
Or a proper heavy wool blanket to go on top of your duvet. It’s the absolute best at keeping me warm.

Or both.

Horsemenoftheaclopalypse · 08/01/2019 22:32

YABU
They are amazing.
turn it on 30 mins before bed - JUST AMAZING!

Honeyroar · 08/01/2019 22:34

I love ours, but my stepson says he got a slight shock off his and wouldn't have it on the bed.

They're great for warming up the bed, but a hot water bottle is better for all night.

userschmoozer · 08/01/2019 22:35

I use mine with a surge protector.

MrsSnippyPants · 08/01/2019 22:36

Could not live without mine (well I could but I would be even more snippy than I usually am).

Jamiefraserskilt · 08/01/2019 22:53

Hot water bottle lover here.

longwayoff · 08/01/2019 22:57

Mine was a present during last years snowy weather. I'm sorry to say I sneered a bit but it was freezing so . . .nothing compares. Ultimate comfort.

BunsOfAnarchy · 08/01/2019 22:58

I didnt even know they still sold them 😂

DH and i have this. Hes always hot and im always cold. Currently in bed in my cosy fluffy dressing gown whilst DH is in his boxers only. Perfecto

BunsOfAnarchy · 08/01/2019 22:59

To add. If i was REALLY cold ive found hot water bottle is absolute best.

Klobluchar · 08/01/2019 23:01

I adore mine. Usually turn it off when I get in and it has timed cut off anyway.

SealSong · 08/01/2019 23:12

Omg genius idea to get Alexa to switch it on!

Gunpowder · 08/01/2019 23:18

I had a facial the other day and laid on an electric blanket. ‘‘Twas heaven.

Sammysquiz · 08/01/2019 23:19

They’re not even in the top 10 of household appliances which cause fires. Even your TV is more likely to cause a fire then an electric blanket!

MissLadyM · 08/01/2019 23:19

Are the wires not bumpy under the sheet?

userschmoozer · 08/01/2019 23:23

I've got the sheepskin effect one, its like using a teddy bear sheet.
