..to be sad about my mug and it’s replacement.

I had a lovely mug. With elephants on it- I like elephants a lot. Before Christmas, ds broke it. Proper accident, and he was properly sorry. For Christmas, he bought me a lovely new mug, with elephants on it. He tried to find an exact replacement, but they aren’t made any more. But this is a very, very nice, quite expensive mug. But it’s the wrong shape, too big, too thick, the handle’s wrong, the colour’s wrong and it makes my tea gets cold really quickly. And I don’t like it. And i’m going to have to drink my tea out of it every day until he leaves home. It’s bad enough that I had to put up with breakfast in bed twice a year for 15 years when I hate it to spare my children’s feelings. But now I have to drink out of a bad mug!!!!!!! He’s so pleased with himself for finding it and keeps offering to make tea.......Did I mention that my diamond shoes are too tight?

Argh. I feel your pain! Obviously you can never tell him though.

How old is he? How long must you endure?!

Oysterbabe · 06/01/2019 10:30

Ah that's a shame. I hate drinking out of a bad mug.

SylvanianFamiliesNurserySet · 06/01/2019 10:30

Was it an Emma Bridgewater mug? Because you can usually find them (at a price) if you know where to look.

Belindabauer · 06/01/2019 10:31

Your 15 year old keeps offering to make you tea!

I can't get past this.

Misses point of thread.

Turns green with envy.

WickedGoodDoge · 06/01/2019 10:31

DH would sympathise. I accidentally broke the only mug he could drink his coffee from and it took him a year to find a suitable replacement .

I really did feel terrible and he was very polite about it, but he was very upset. His mug was very particular dimensions and no others were quite right.

I would use the new mug but quietly do your own hunt for an acceptable replacement.

MargotLovedTom1 · 06/01/2019 10:32

Sympathies; I'm fussy about my drinking vessels too.

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 06/01/2019 10:32

Q

Pinkyyy · 06/01/2019 10:34

Tell him you're only going to use it on special occasions in case it gets broken again

GreatWesternValkyrie · 06/01/2019 10:35

Haha, I hear you Bertrand, I also like a very specific size, shape and thickness of mug.

Console yourself with the thought that you’ve obviously got a very thoughtful son as I think you’re going to have to live with it (or orchestrate a mug robbery or catastrophic mug accident Wink)

Wolfiefan · 06/01/2019 10:35

Pinkyyy that’s a great idea. I have two perfect identical tea mugs. Actually thinking of buying two more just in case. Blush

Murinae · 06/01/2019 10:35

I sympathise too. I have now bought a stock of 8 of my favourite mugs after spending ages searching after it was broken accidentally.

MotorcycleMayhem · 06/01/2019 10:36

I feel the same about mugs. I hate other people buying me mugs, they are always well intentioned but rarely well executed.

Shall we see if we can help in the MN mug hunt?

NataliaOsipova · 06/01/2019 10:39

Can it be “saved for best”? I have found that expensive mugs may get faded/discoloured in the dishwasher with too regular use......

Luckingfovely · 06/01/2019 10:41

Yes go on, let's hunt for it: mn can do anything!!

Flutternotsoshy · 06/01/2019 10:43

I'm the same about mugs. I like ones that look like oversized teacups, but they can't have a "frill" around the bottom, just a raised bump.

DD broke mine, it only came from Asda. So I ran out and bought a replacement.

Two days later I found out that they were discontinuing the range so I went out and bought three more which are stored away in case of further accidents.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 06/01/2019 10:43

I feel your pain, I spent £26 replacing a Night's Watch GOT mug twice after it got broken, then the plot of GOT moved on and it was unavailable!

I have a Flamingoland mug now which is nice but just not the same.

I agree keeping it for best is a good idea, then you can hunt for the perfect replacement and buy at least 2!

masterandmargarita · 06/01/2019 10:47

So you are essentially lying to your ds to make him feel better about himself over and over again? I pity his future wife. Just drink out of another mug and don't invest so much emotional energy into something so inconsequential

FortunesFave · 06/01/2019 10:49

And i’m going to have to drink my tea out of it every day until he leaves home.

Confused

How mollycoddled is your son?

Just use another mug. Do you really only use ONE mug all the time? Sounds very silly to me.

CarolDanvers · 06/01/2019 10:52

Ah here come the po faced miseries to piss all over the thread Hmm

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 06/01/2019 10:52

So you are essentially lying to your ds to make him feel better about himself over and over again? I pity his future wife

🤣🤣🤣 lighten up ffs.

PenelopeFlintstone · 06/01/2019 10:53

If you work, could you take it in and tell your DS it's your office mug now - cos it's so special Wink

happymum1984 · 06/01/2019 10:54

Can you take it to work?!

lostinjapan · 06/01/2019 10:56

No, don’t say you’ll ‘keep it for best’. I’d be quite hurt in your DS’ position if you stuck the mug away in a cupboard. Don’t hunt down a replica of the original either - that makes it clear you don’t like the one he bought you.

You’ll just have to stick with this mug I’m afraid. Give it time and you’ll probably get used to it.

BertrandRussell · 06/01/2019 10:56

He’s 17. But he’s taking a year out so it’s at least 18 months before he leaves home!

And for any posters taking this rather more seriously than it was meant- of course I’m going to pretend I like it to spare his feelings! It’s only a mug, and he spent ages looking for it. What possible benefit would there be in telling him I don’t like it? Grin

Isn’t it so precious to you now because he bought it that you want to keep it good?
