I had a lovely mug. With elephants on it- I like elephants a lot. Before Christmas, ds broke it. Proper accident, and he was properly sorry. For Christmas, he bought me a lovely new mug, with elephants on it. He tried to find an exact replacement, but they aren’t made any more. But this is a very, very nice, quite expensive mug. But it’s the wrong shape, too big, too thick, the handle’s wrong, the colour’s wrong and it makes my tea gets cold really quickly. And I don’t like it. And i’m going to have to drink my tea out of it every day until he leaves home. It’s bad enough that I had to put up with breakfast in bed twice a year for 15 years when I hate it to spare my children’s feelings. But now I have to drink out of a bad mug!!!!!!! He’s so pleased with himself for finding it and keeps offering to make tea.......Did I mention that my diamond shoes are too tight?

I love that he put effort and thought into it. I think his future wife will be pretty bloody lucky, frankly!

I understand
DC bought me a new purse for Xmas (I even chose/hinted at the one I wanted)
They bought it for me - I don’t like it in use - it’s too stiff, have to tip it up to get loose change out of
I’m sucking it up for now but will tell them in s few weeks when I find the right purse

Houseonahill · 06/01/2019 10:59

Just accidently break the new mug?

umpteenpinecones · 06/01/2019 11:01

I feel for you, it takes me forever to find the right mug if my tea-in-bed-first-thing one gets broken.

"It means such a lot to me that I'd hate it to get broken as well, so I'll save it for special occasions".

Life's too short to drink tea out of the wrong receptacle. Put it in a prominent place on display for all to admire, and buy another mug.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 06/01/2019 11:01

He sounds like a great lad! Kind, thoughtful and looks out for his mum.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 06/01/2019 11:02

YANBU. Mugs are IMPORTANT, ffs. I have specific shaped/sized ones for various stages of the day. old saddo

masterandmargarita · 06/01/2019 11:04

Sorry , you're right he does sound lovely. What i meant was can't you just try being a bit more honest with him, kids are sturdier than you think.

Oysterbabe · 06/01/2019 11:04

I like quite a thick mug, I can't be doing with these thin delclicate ones. My favourite is a Starbucks one I got as part of a gift set. There were 2 but my FIL broke one. I hate the IKEA ones that go with ours plates and bowls. Tea just tastes wrong out of them.

Flannelled · 06/01/2019 11:06

I feel your pain! Same here. I'm going to take mine to work to use...

PosiePerkinandPootle · 06/01/2019 11:07

He sounds very thoughtful. Sounds like you're doing a grand job. If it was my DS I'd be trying to spare his feelings too.. I'd probably have to go off tea & start drinking coffee which would require a different mug entirely

Becles · 06/01/2019 11:08

Do you have the details of the special mug? The company or eBay may turn or up,I'm sure there's someone willing to turn detective Xmas Grin

And to the huffed posters, I drink hot beverages from a specific mug and eat cereal out of a bowl I've had for two decades. It suits me and I have pleasant associations. Life's about small moments of happiness wherever possible.

StoodOnALego · 06/01/2019 11:10

I'm outraged @WickedGoodDoge saying my cheers mug from the bar in Boston is 'tacky' Shock I think you'll find it's perfect for coffee number 3 of the day (having used specific mugs for number and two).

I'm struggling a bit because DH bought an expensive bean to cup machine for my Christmas. I can't use it and I don't like the coffee that much. I prefer my old £15 Tesco coffee maker...

MorningsEleven · 06/01/2019 11:16

Imagine the day he leaves home; you'll be crying and he'll think it's tears of sorrow over him but we know it'll be happy tears because you can use a new mug. Just remember not to put pictures of yourself and the new mug on social media ☕

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 06/01/2019 11:17

@StoodOnALego 😫

I have made it VERY CLEAR that on no account is anyone, for any reason, EVER to buy me a milk frother, since I would have to be polite and pretend I love it when I actually already have a functional (cheap!) system which is perfection.

OP, I completely understand where you are coming from. I have no advice, only sympathy Thanks

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 06/01/2019 11:17

My favourite mug is from pizza hut Blush

After smashing my long standing favourite mug (( my farts hospitalise small children mug )) I turned into the cinderella of the mug world but could I hell find a mug as good.

Until one night we went to pizza hut, I ended up getting a cup of tea --to recover from the £100 bill for microwaved pizzas )) and there it was. Perfection.

Perfect thickness, depth, good handle.......has careful it's hut printed on the front.

So it fell in my bag Blush

Never in my life have I stolen anything but what else was I meant to do ?? Live without tea ?? If I go to hell, it will be worth it.

Babymamamama · 06/01/2019 11:20

Find the one you like if you can ... Purchase it on the sly and then swap the offending cup for one you actually like... I doubt anyone else would notice.

PoohBearsHole · 06/01/2019 11:21

pre heat the mug. will solve the tea going cold issue!

flumpybear · 06/01/2019 11:24

eBay is your friend - we've both found replacement favourite mugs on there - exactly the same! Takes a bit of shopping and time but you'll get there I'm sure

I'd use the new one for hot chocolate or coffee - if you're like me I have a special cup for tea, bone China only - coffee and hot chocolatier aren't so fussy - I had clay cups in the past which I'd never entertain tea in, ever! 😵

thefirstmrsdewinter · 06/01/2019 11:25

I understand op. My tea only tastes good out of one kind of mug.

Dh's favourite mug broke and I found an exact replacement on eBay. As it sounds quite distinctive it may not be hard to find.

ladyratterley · 06/01/2019 11:26

I accidentally smashed my own favourite mug a year or so ago. I was so upset ended up paying £40 to replace it from eBay as it turned out to be a special, limited edition collectors item Blush
I justified this as it had sentimental value because my nephew gave it to me!

mrsmuddlepies · 06/01/2019 11:26

You are such a lovely Mum, Bertrand. Whenever I read your posts, I tend to agree with you on a range of issues and this just confirms my good impression Smile

MilkGoatee · 06/01/2019 11:27

"Dear DS, I love the mug you got me, it's so sweet of you to find a replacement. I am loathe to use it, though, seeing as it's so easy to break in the washing up. I'll use it as a pen holder cup, and use a cheap mug for my tea."

Face saved.

xJessica · 06/01/2019 11:29

This thread has just sent me frantically searching through the mug cupboard! Every year from late November I bring out the Christmas mugs because they're absolutely perfect for morning coffee. Every year I spend ages looking in January for another mug that would be good for coffee and I just remembered when in home bargains yesterday that last January I got one that was pretty good and I hadn't seen it for a long long time! I'm talking pre summer.... I don't have any idea why it was allowed to go missing or why or when I stopped using it. After a massive search I finally found it, and just in time, because the christmas ones will be going away today!

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 06/01/2019 11:31

Tell us the brand of the mug or the shop it came from

Tell us as much details about it as possible. There loads of odd ones on here who love searching out stuff for others!

Charley50 · 06/01/2019 11:33

Oh gosh! This is awful! I hate drinking out of the wrong mug. It's going to have to have an 'accident.'
