Pub puts up a sign saying

Due to the hunt today, we regret to inform you that we will not be welcoming
Saboteurs or Vegans
into the premises

Kind Regards,
The Management

The brewery have distanced themselves (Harveys Sussex)
Hi everyone, as a company we do not endorse, whatsoever, the actions taken by management of The Dorset yesterday, regarding the sign placed on the door.
We are fully committed to inclusivity and their actions should not reflect any part of us as a company.
I hope you can appreciate we have just come back from our own Christmas holidays to news of this event, and will look to put an official statement out later on today.
We do not run the pub directly as it is a tenanted house. Needless to say we are in touch with the licensees and disciplinary action is being taken against those involved. With kind regards, Harvey's Brewery.

Vegans?

What have they done

And how do you tell if someone is a sab or vegan

I mean obs the vegan asking for vegan wine would be a clue...but apart from that

madcatladyforever · 27/12/2018 14:25

haha I live near there I may well go up and shit stir a bit Smile

Buster72 · 27/12/2018 14:27

Well no discrimination there, at least no more than a pub near a football ground being designated "home" or "away " on Match day....
Obviously he knows his audience

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 27/12/2018 14:28

Why vegans and not vegetarians?

Lockheart · 27/12/2018 14:30

Being charitable, perhaps he knows lots of people with the hunt frequent the pub and he wants to avoid fights.

Augusta2012 · 27/12/2018 14:39

He’s worded it badly but I know what he means and sympathise with why.

This won’t be the first time this has happened in the area and if a group of people who visit and use their facilities are rude, argumentative, cause damage and upset other customers and lose they have every right not to provide service to that group again.

ClaryFray · 27/12/2018 14:40

There is such a thing as vegan extremism. Perhaps thats what he meant.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 27/12/2018 14:41

But vegetarians are fine...

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 27/12/2018 14:42

How is he going to be able to tell?

He said they wont be welcome....not please dont come in

Theoryofmould · 27/12/2018 14:46

I'm sure I heard recently that some vegan extremists (is that a term?) had been causing trouble somewhere else in Sussex, so that might be the reason for them. As for hunt saboteurs, well that's fairly obvious, there's a hunt on and they'll go to the pub and the landlords don't want trouble. Although where I live, when the hunt goes through it's them and their hounds that cause the most grief and trouble.

99RedBalloonsFloating · 27/12/2018 14:52

If you look at their menu online, there literally isn't anything vegan on it anyway!

Augusta2012 · 27/12/2018 14:53

Oh God. It’s yet another denouncement. Someone has said something that somebody doesn’t like so a social media mob are demanding he is destroyed and driven out of his job and home.

It’s like modern day lynchings. It’s certainly mob justice.

It actually scares me that we have so many who see these denouncements of wrongthink (because that’s what they are) as morally good.

It’s very similar to the tactics of Nazism, Stalinism and the Stasi. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if in a few years this sort of thing would lead to enforced internment in re-education camps.

They’re already destroying peoples’ jobs, homes and families. Why not take their freedom or their lives too?

madcatladyforever · 27/12/2018 14:54

I'm not sure how they can tell, I'm just a middle aged woman who looks completely normal, no dreads or piercings.
Usually vegans are very well catered for in Lewes with no fuss. I'm actually vegetarian now but I was vegan for 10 years and enjoyed many a wonderful vegan meal in various Lewes pubs.

Xascha · 27/12/2018 14:54

Hardly, he might be anti those groups, but there are better ways to go about it

I think vegans might drink

And i know im like a dog with a fucking bone but dont a lot of vegetarians have an issue with hunting? Maybe he left them off by accident

ExFury · 27/12/2018 14:55

The landlord has already apologised and said that he meant a specific group of vegan protesters who he believed were planning on causing trouble locally.

Badly worded but hardly worth them losing their jobs over imo.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 27/12/2018 14:56

madcat

My point exactly Grin they will never know...unless you assault a hunter

CarolDanvers · 27/12/2018 14:56

Pubs round here put signs up every weekend there's a football match on indicating if it's a pub for home or away fans. Not really any different to that imo.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 27/12/2018 14:56

Exactly

And what exfury says makes much more sense

ClaryFray · 27/12/2018 14:57

It's all about context his pub hosts a lot of requlars of the sport, I use the term losely, and he doesn't want trouble in his establishment again understandable. So has made a judgement to refuse entry to people who may cause issues. Vegan is the blanket term he used, an error in judgement.

He's apologised I believe, but no people want him ruined. Like modern day witch hunts.

TruckLoadOfSubtleGlitter · 27/12/2018 14:59

It's less about the vegans and more about him being a pro-hunt arsehole.

MadameButterface · 27/12/2018 15:09

“It’s very similar to the tactics of Nazism, Stalinism and the Stasi. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if in a few years this sort of thing would lead to enforced internment in re-education camps.”

Lol not really, but the landlord is doing something similar to the ‘no blacks, no irish’ signs you used to see, but i suppose the people who took issue with that back in the day were a ‘lynch mob’ or something too 🙄

ExFury · 27/12/2018 15:15

It’s no different to pubs banning either Celtic or rangers fans on old firm day.

If you have two groups gathering locally and there is likely to be trouble then it makes sense for pubs to either ban one side or close. The people that use his pub regularly, so give him his income, are more aligned to the hunt lot so he went with them.

starzig · 27/12/2018 15:25

I am an omnivore. Am I allowed to order a meal that is suitable for a vegan? Or would I be kicked out just in case I am vegan.

Buster72 · 27/12/2018 15:26

There is no comparison with the "No blacks no irish"
This is about keeping potentially troublesome people away from his regular clientele who have shown their loyalty down the years.
