To keep this or am I thief?

So I ordered a purse online from a well known brand.
I paid £12 so cheap and cheerful.
The parcel arrived today and it was well packaged in a nice box and wrapped etc.
I opened it and it was a different purse (loved it ) and I checked online and it is selling on the site for £100 Shock
Moral dilemma ...keep or return ?
Would you tell them ?

I don't think my purse has been sent to someone else as on the box is a sticker with the wrong code on.
So the purse I received has the code and description of the purse I ordered.
So it was labelled wrong in the factory they picked it from.

I’d keep it .
Morally right? Probably not .. but it’s their mistake , not yours

Frenchfancy · 21/11/2018 20:01

But what if you didn't notice the purse was different? What if it is was a gift and you didn't open the box before you offered it? Keep it. They sent it to you and you paid in good faith. You have done nothing wrong n

MrsSkeffington · 21/11/2018 20:02

I'd skip all the way to the shop with my new purse

Nicknacky · 21/11/2018 20:02

Racecardriver It’s not theft.

snowone · 21/11/2018 20:03

Keep it and keep quiet! 🤫

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 21/11/2018 20:04

You are a thief if you keep it. You should send it back.

It is irrelevant whether the shop is small or large.

Cassiopeia13 · 21/11/2018 20:05

I'd keep it and I don't know anyone who wouldn't, it's not your mistake

jarhead123 · 21/11/2018 20:05

Definitely keep it! Their error. Can't believe some people would tell them ha ha

Howdoyoudoit31 · 21/11/2018 20:06

I’d keep it.

Keep it. 👍🏻

BadgerFace · 21/11/2018 20:06

I’d tell them personally unless you are happy to pay the difference if they work it out and contact you...

We had a baby bouncer delivered to us in error this week. The warehouse has obviously put the wrong delivery label on it which was the same as a guitar case we had ordered. I looked it up and it’s £80 and they have no way of tracing it I don’t think but I’ve told my husband to sort out sending it back as I don’t want the potential problem/payment if we keep/sell it!

Skybooks · 21/11/2018 20:06

No way would all of these posters send it back!

I'd keep it.

RibbonAurora · 21/11/2018 20:07

I’d tell because I’d be, probably unnecessarily, worried they’d come after me but If it’s amazon, they’ll probably tell you to keep it. Just had the same with a pair of slippers. Same brand and almost identical in style and color just a difference in lining material which equates to a $49 mark up in price I wasn’t prepared to pay when I ordered. Called them said they’d sent me the wrong ones not only did they tell me to keep them they asked if I still wanted the others.

cowfacemonkey · 21/11/2018 20:07

Yes they did. We naively thought when we phoned they might have been a bit more appreciative considering it was an epic fuck up on their part but alas not so much as a thank you.

crispysausagerolls · 21/11/2018 20:08

Happened to me once but it had been personalised as I’d requested my item be so I kept it as they couldn’t have resold anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️ Bit different if returnable though

BumbleBeee69 · 21/11/2018 20:10

Keep It !! Merry Christmas OP Grin

MoonlightBringsSanity · 21/11/2018 20:10

Keep it! You’re not a thief- just benefiting from an incompetent packing/labelling machine/person. I don’t see this as a big deal. Just a bit of a treat!

JacquesHammer · 21/11/2018 20:10

Can't believe some people would tell them ha ha

I can’t believe some people wouldn’t Confused

Oldbutstillgotit · 21/11/2018 20:12

DH ordered a camera . The one that arrived cosy hundreds more than the one he ordered . He phoned them to explain but was told to keep it and they apologised for any inconvenience!

cavycavy · 21/11/2018 20:12

Tell them but say you will struggle to get to a post office for a while because ........ insert reason/white lie here...... The effort/expense of arranging a courier to collect it will probably mean they thank you for your honesty and tell you to keep it.

About 15 years ago I was sent loads of pampers nappies by accident. (LOADS) by boots. I tried really hard to get them collected by boots as there was no way I was carting several heavy boxes to the post office. Boots just weren’t interested.

I gave them all to charity in the end. I was single and didn’t know anyone with a baby.

To this day I keep hoping I’ll be accidentally sent something in the post but I suspect computer systems are a lot more accurate now.

OlennasWimple · 21/11/2018 20:12

I'd think that I would be doomed to bad luck if kept it... If you phone / email and tell them about their error, the onus is on them to correct the problem. They may well tell you to keep it, as the cost to them of collecting it will be close to the profit they would make from re-selling it

VladmirsPoutine · 21/11/2018 20:13

You surely know starting this sort of thread on Mumsnet would mean anything other than informing them would mean you're definitely going to hell. I'd even go so far as to say if the scenario were you'd just realised you'd been given too much change from a small shop in rural Australia, posters would be telling you unless you booked a flight back to Oz leaving tomorrow at the crack of dawn you're pretty much satan incarnate.

Keep the bag and think no more of it.

PinkysEars · 21/11/2018 20:16

I once had someone else's order packaged in with mine. When I phoned up to tell the (well-known and not cheap) retailer they were so surprised I'd been honest that they gave me a £20 voucher.

So I would tell them, and in fact did tell them.

BerylStreep · 21/11/2018 20:17

Up to you if you want to make a moral call to contact the retailer, but please ignore the posters who are saying that legally you are a thief.

BertramKibbler · 21/11/2018 20:17

Be honest, they may let you keep it.

Selfridges accidently sent me a Chloé bag once and said I could keep it
