So I ordered a purse online from a well known brand.
I paid £12 so cheap and cheerful.
The parcel arrived today and it was well packaged in a nice box and wrapped etc.
I opened it and it was a different purse (loved it ) and I checked online and it is selling on the site for £100 Shock
Moral dilemma ...keep or return ?
Would you tell them ?

We ordered a memory foam bed topper. It arrived slightly damaged ( a small chunk off the corner ) I phoned to inform and they said they would exchange. New one arrived but the delivery driver would not take it because he had not been asked by supplier. Phoned to inform. Waited. Phoned again, and again nothing. Left messages etc. This went on for 3 months or so. Ended up keeping it as it was just too much hassle to try to return.

ADastardlyThing · 21/11/2018 20:17

Id keep it without so much as a fleeting moment of doubt.

Rhiannon13 · 21/11/2018 20:18

My mum ordered something and in the box she also found a pair of slip-on shoes, which she took an instant shine to. She was wearing them when she told me the story. I have no idea if she was wrong or not!

Hefzi · 21/11/2018 20:19

Something similar happened to me with Amazon (ordered a tin opener, was sent a high end electronic gadget) - they told me to keep it.

Did me no good- I'm not a gadget person Grin But hopefully someone in BHF picked up a nice bargain as a result.

I vote for letting them know - never a bad thing to clock up a good deed in a dark world and all that: plus, if they tell you to keep it, you can enjoy it with a clear conscience, which will mean you'll enjoy it more.

StarShapedWindow · 21/11/2018 20:19

I’d keep it but keep all the wrapping for a month or so incase anyone notices (I bet they won’t)

incendio · 21/11/2018 20:21

I'd keep it, it's their mistake!

Dodie66 · 21/11/2018 20:21

I ordered an item that had the wrong number on the box like your did. I contacted the company and they said to keep the item and they also sent me a replacement with free delivery. I would contact them if I were you

TheBigBangRocks · 21/11/2018 20:21

Size of th retailer has no bearing, its still wrong to keep it. I thought parents were meant to teach wrong from right so led by example, quite sad how many would simply keep it with no guilt.

FiveShelties · 21/11/2018 20:22

Would you have told them if they had sent you a purse costing £4 after you had paid £12?

Rudgie47 · 21/11/2018 20:22

I'd keep it no doubt about it.

Vinomcstephens · 21/11/2018 20:23

If you bought the £100 purse, and the £12 purse turned up instead, would you think "oh it's their mistake, I won't say anything" or would you be straight on the phone to them to demand your more expensive purse, since that's what you paid for?

A PP said they couldn't believe other posters who would 'fess up but I'm genuinely appalled at anyone who would think they could keep the expensive purse. I don't know if legally it's theft but it's a shitty thing to do. No-one's going to lose their job over it but please, don't look for validation from strangers. You obviously want us all to tell you to keep it but you'd be wrong to do so.

Aeroflotgirl · 21/11/2018 20:23

Their mistake, you keep it.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 21/11/2018 20:23

keep It. Why should you have to schelp down for a post office or collection point because of their mistake

Honeyroar · 21/11/2018 20:24

This thread just shows how selfish people are nowadays. 🙁

And yes Skyboots, some people would send it back. I've done it recently. I treat people the way I'd like to be treated if it were me making the mistake. If they tell you to keep it, fair enough (the company I dealt with didn't), but at least have the integrity and honesty to ask.

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 21/11/2018 20:24

Keep, if it is a big company that wouldn't notice it but I'd have a conscience over a struggling small company and would return it then.

hannah1992 · 21/11/2018 20:24

I ordered an Amazon fire tablet from Amazon last year for dd1 for Xmas and they sent 3. I checked my banking and definitely only paid for 1. I emailed them and they never replied so I left it a bit and now my mum has one of them and my MIL has the other.

Nothing else has been said

AcrossthePond55 · 21/11/2018 20:24

"Honesty is the best policy"

I'd tell them but make it clear that it's up to them to either to arrange and pay for the return at my convenience.

I'd probably send an email so I have a paper trail.

Thehop · 21/11/2018 20:25

I’d keep it.

Barker26 · 21/11/2018 20:27

Keep it, no one is going to lose their job over it ! They can't prove they sent you the wrong one! They probably haven't even noticed especially this time of year. Don't feel bad it's no skin off their nose !

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/11/2018 20:28

I would tell them - my conscience wouldn’t be clear if I didn’t. I would feel I was being dishonest - I don’t know if it is legally theft, to keep goods sent in error, but it does feel unethical.

hattyho · 21/11/2018 20:28

Thanks everyone
I'm going to keep it
Merry Christmas to me ho ho ho

I can guarantee they won't even notice. They will probably realise that the codes have been mixed up in the warehouse but they will just sort it out and move on. Nobody will be sacked. Nobody has stolen anything. A mistake was made which won't affect the company but it happens to be in your favour.

Keep the bag and enjoy it.

EmbraRocks · 21/11/2018 20:29

Like badwifey and Phoebe Buffay and her shoes l'd hear.. 'not not mine, not not mine' every time l used it!

JacquesHammer · 21/11/2018 20:29

I notice the OP didn’t bother to answer whether they would chase the company if they got sent an item of lower value...

Kamma89 · 21/11/2018 20:30

If they were a tax dodging international I'd keep it to be honest...but yes I'd technically be a thief!
