To ask exactly how you pronounce MX?

And does anyone actually use it?

It’s spelled “Mx”, but it’s pronounced “Throat-wobbler-mangrove”

Or should that be updated to “Throat-wobble-nonbinarygrove”?

BettyDuMonde · 18/11/2018 16:23

I’ve been a Ms for 20 odd years (despite being on husband number 3) so I am somewhat sympathetic.

No idea how to pronounce it though - especially when regional accents come into play (Ms can be Miz or Muzz - I go with Muzz because Miz is easier to confuse with Miss).

If you follow the same convention then Mx could be ‘Mucks’ or ‘Mix’ - best to ask the person using it.

(Fuck the special pronouns thing though, titles are like names, within the individual’s control, but pronouns are based on outsiders perception, so not for the individual to dictate)

SpottingTheZebras · 18/11/2018 16:28

Pronoun for someone who says they are neither female or male.

It’s also if the gender is not known (if you are writing to that person) or if you do wish to state your gender.

It’s pronounced Mix

WongaGoneWronga · 18/11/2018 16:29

"Mks" is how I've heard it. A gender neutral title seems like a positive thing to me.

Ms is an improvement on Miss/Mrs as it reduces discrimination for women. There was a lot of mockery, pushback and misunderstanding when that first came in too. Lots of silliness about pronouncing it, and lots of people saying it meant you were a lesbian or a divorcee I feel you used it.

Most people have got over that now, but not all have managed to let go of their need to know from a title whether a woman is or has been married.

Mx is an improvement on Mr/Ms as it works to reduce discrimination for all people. It's harms no one. Gender neutral is a good thing in this context.

Mocking it and belittling people who would like to use it seems daft at best.

ShotsFired · 18/11/2018 16:29

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig How can you be neither male or female? hmm

Are you sure you want to go there?

SassitudeandSparkle · 18/11/2018 16:30

I pronounce it mix/micks - there are two teachers that use it on my DD's online homework system. Not sure if that is by choice or they've picked the wrong option tbh, both women.

MIdgebabe · 18/11/2018 16:40

THere is a question in my head about why we indicate people’s sex so much. Why should the electricity company need to know my sex?

littlbrowndog · 18/11/2018 16:41

Jeez I bet men won’t use the mx title

Midge They don't. I think it would be best to do away with pronouns unless the information is actually relevant.

OP posts:
LuggsaysNotaWomen · 18/11/2018 16:44

If it doesn’t signify anything, why use a title at all?

I’d be more on board with doing away with titles altogether than creating ever more ridiculous ones to represent every iteration of a persons self concept.

The pink electricity is more expensive.
