And does anyone actually use it?

OP posts:
LuggsaysNotaWomen · 18/11/2018 20:56

If you don’t want a title that communicates your sex/marital status because you think it’s irrelevant, I can understand that, but that’s what titles are for - it’s their whole point.

Replacing them with a completely meaningless utterance is daft. Mx doesn’t dénote anything so why bother?

Perfectly1mperfect · 18/11/2018 20:57

one of the mysterious MXs has spoken, it is evident that 'insufferable bore' is indeed the correct pronunciation.

And 'Rude' is indeed the correct pronunciation of your name, Lucy. 😋

JellySlice · 18/11/2018 21:22

*Oh, you know my partner do you?

Cunt.*

Rude.

Hmm
Perfectly1mperfect · 18/11/2018 21:28

JellySlice

Have you not found any of the other posts on here rude ? No, just that one. Okay. 🙄

StoneofDestiny · 18/11/2018 21:42

It's pronounced make your mind up and stop messing with everybody's head

WongaGoneWronga · 18/11/2018 22:05

Chris It isn’t a word and is unpronounceable. Are people really called this in real life? Never met one!

That's pretty much what traditionalists said when Ms began to gain ground in common usage then.

LucyMorningStar · 18/11/2018 23:13

@Perfectly1mperfect that's Mrs Rude to you please Grin

TittyFahLaEtcetera · 18/11/2018 23:14

Mx doesn’t dénote anything so why bother?

Funny, that's exactly What I was told 20 years ago when I started using Ms despite only being 18.

Apparently it meant I was a spinster, divorced, being 'precious', bitter and was 'meaningless' all at the same time.

Nope, I just felt that if men's titles make no reference to their marital status then why should mine? So if there's people out there that wish to not make reference to marital status OR gender, as a personal preference, then why the he'll shouldn't they use it?

No one is forcing any of you to be Mx, so whyforce your preferences on others?

These threads really expose the transphobes - and this isn't even a trans issue!

ReflectionsofParadise · 18/11/2018 23:26

I have gone by Ms since marriage. Fuck using 'Mrs'. I am a Miz and I always bloody will be from now on.

I don't know why but I find 'Mrs' so nauseating Blush

I also seem to get a lot more respect for Ms these days than people would've in the past. Though maybe it's because I shout at them "I am not anybody's missus!" when they say 'Mrs' Grin

Perfectly1mperfect · 18/11/2018 23:43

that's Mrs Rude to you please

I wasn't sure you would be able to pronounce Mrs if you couldn't work out how to pronounce Mx though. I wouldn't like to confuse you so I'll stick with 'Rude'. Wink

LucyMorningStar · 19/11/2018 00:10

I reckon the Soviets had the best idea. Just call everyone 'comrade'. Male, female, single, married, whatever.

None of this surrounding yourself in the aura of mysterious MX bull.

VotingFox · 19/11/2018 03:15

An ex pronounced it "em ex" but they might have been spelling it out for me, we only discussed it once.

LeekingPotato · 19/11/2018 04:17

I've met two people that use it. One intersex person, one non-binary.

why use it at all if it doesn't mean anything?
I imagine there are many reasons, but one practical, every day one is that a heck of a lot of digital systems used by all sorts of companies have 'title' as a required field. Want to have utilities? You're probably going to have to select a title.

Bluesheep8 · 19/11/2018 05:33

Never heard of it.

QueenHippo · 19/11/2018 06:00

you pronounce Mx exactly the same as Ms, but with a "ks" (or "x") sound on the end, in place of the "z" sound in Ms

It's a gender neutral term that doesn't reveal marital status (as that concept is rather outdated)

hmmwhatatodo · 19/11/2018 06:02

I’m late to the party. This is the first time I’ve heard of it.

hmmwhatatodo · 19/11/2018 06:03

I also like the idea of no title.

penisbeakers · 19/11/2018 06:18

It's mix or mux, and I use it.

penisbeakers · 19/11/2018 06:20

Although frankly this thread is obviously a set up to take the piss, or hate on non binary folks.

Quelle surprise.

TroysMammy · 19/11/2018 06:31

Why chose a title anyway? I'm happy to be known by first name and/or surname. My birth certificate doesn't say Miss, Ms or anything else.

Katurah · 19/11/2018 06:39

We had a teacher at school use this until recently - it was pronounced as "Mix"

AgathaRaisinDetra · 19/11/2018 06:41

Em Ex

Like a bike.

randomchap · 19/11/2018 07:46

I work in a profession where honourifics are generally expected by clients and colleagues. When contacting people for the first time via letter or email those with gender neutral names are addressed using Mx. After they reply we can then use whatever honourific the recipient uses.

I only have one contact who uses Mx, she's worked in a male dominated environment for years and is happier using it. I don't see why she should be told she has to use Ms, Miss or Mrs if she doesn't want to.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 19/11/2018 07:58

No need for honourifics. No problem

I dont see the point in them

I dont use them for myself unless its a tickbox thingy (which to date ive not seen mx on) then it depends on my mood

Never seen it on a letter and neither has dh who gets more letters than i do Grin

Not to say it never happens...but we've never seen it

Dragon3 · 19/11/2018 08:33

I'm astounded to hear that Mx is used in real life. I thought that it was a niche Tumblr thing. Live and learn.

Unisex honorifics wouldn't be a bad thing I suppose. 'Mx' looks weird and artificial to me but I could get over it if men used 'Mx' too.
