And does anyone actually use it?

OP posts:
JellySlice · 18/11/2018 18:15

You don't.

You ignore the nonsense and don't use a title if reality bothers them.

JellySlice · 18/11/2018 18:17

an English language neologistic honorific

I miss-read that as "an English language neologistic horrorific". Seems appropriate.

TittyFahLaEtcetera · 18/11/2018 18:22

Mux or Mix.

I know at least two people who use it. One is FtM (transman) and one is intersex and does not wish to have corrective surgery.

NHS trusts local to me also use it.

Most people nowadays say "yourself" instead of sir or madam.

Eh? How does that work?

"Good evening yourself, table for two?"**

Indeed Bruegal et al, it doesn't work, but people seem to do it a lot, especially estate agents nad double glazing salesmen.
(it does seem to be men, I think they think "you" sounds rude)

choccyp1g · 18/11/2018 18:41

Why do I bother with the Bl*dy bolding!

goodwinter · 18/11/2018 18:46

pronouns are based on outsiders perception, so not for the individual to dictate

I've got no horse in this race really, but surely this isn't true? If someone called me "him" because they perceived me to be masculine I'd be pretty cheesed off.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 18/11/2018 19:03

I've come across a handful of people who use it.

It's usually pronounced Mux, though I think there's some variation even amongst those who do use it.

hazeyjane · 18/11/2018 19:07

As a back of the throat gutteral sound. Like an owl coughing up an owl pellet.

CalishataFolkart · 18/11/2018 19:13

I use it. I pronounce it Mix. And I hope everyone being hilariously eye-rolly about it is proud of themselves. It costs nothing to be a little bit kind.

This isn’t about self-ID. This is just making someone else’s life a little more comfortable at no cost to you. I fucking despair.

RatRolyPoly · 18/11/2018 19:18

Mx has been around for yonks, but I've come across it quite a few times in a corporate context and from international businesses. They use it because they don't know whether the person they're writing to is a Mr or a Ms. Pretty useful I guess, particularly when foreign forenames don't often help matters!

hazeyjane · 18/11/2018 19:25

The thing is if you are writing to someone and they have a name that could be used by a man or a woman, don't you just use their name?

spannablue · 18/11/2018 19:29

Mix or Mux. I've met a few.

Seconding the despair at people's horrible derisory rude and hostile responses on this thread. A bit of empathy costs nothing.

Seniorcitizen1 · 18/11/2018 20:22

Dont know dont care as will never use it - people call me Dr

Chrisinthemorning · 18/11/2018 20:24

It isn’t a word and is unpronounceable. Are people really called this in real life? Never met one!

RatRolyPoly · 18/11/2018 20:39

No need for any preciousness.

Yeah, all those work in your letter, but what about on your envelope?? Seriously, my dp has received several letters from international businesses only recently addressed Mx. R. RolyPoly. It's not new, and it's not a "woke" thing.

PlainVanilla · 18/11/2018 20:40

Just realised that all emails that come to me from my daughters school are addressed to
“Mx ...”
My husbands are too!
So they are using Mx for people that haven’t given a title to be used?

NopeNi · 18/11/2018 20:53

Grin Lucy

Still, gives them something to feel victimised and dramatic over. Alleviating said boredom for a few minutes.

RatRolyPoly · 18/11/2018 20:53

No need for honourifics

Orrrrrr, if you're in the habit of using honourifics and feel it would be impolite not to, use a neutral one.

What exactly is your problem with it? Why shouldn't people use it? Should they not use honourifics at all, is that the issue? Or is it the neutrality of it? Because if it's the neutrality I think you've loaded "Mx" with your contemporary trans-issues baggage, when it predates that but a mile and is mostly used by people who have nothing to do with trans.
