To be utterly fed up dealing with the hard of thinking

Wiggler1 · 15/11/2018 21:11

I am so so sick of listening to/reading the opinions of people who just fail to engage their brains for more than a nanosecond on any subject that takes their fancy.

“We voted leave/brexit means brexit”

“Trans women are women”

“Fed is best”

“Women just aren’t as good at corporate jobs”

“Vaccines cause autism”

“Animals don’t have emotions/opinions”

Ad infinitum. We KNOW that brexit is likely to lead to economic doom (at least for a period), trans women are not biological women, breast is actually best for the health outcomes of mother and baby at population level (although there are very valid reasons it may not be for individuals), women are just as successful in the corporate world if they’re not held back by men (or other women), vaccines do not cause autism, animals very visibly do have emotions/opinions, if you bother to watch them for long enough, etc etc etc.

I know this is likely to be controversial because of the examples I’ve used, but my point is that people just don’t seem to be able to engage with the slightest piece of research or evidence that their opinions are not in line with the facts.

I can understand knowing a surface level about a topic and getting things wrong, we’re all learning, but listening to people shouting their world view progressively louder, despite all evidence to the contrary, is utterly infuriating.

If you have a well thought out opposing view I’m more than happy to debate, tell me about the research you’ve done on potential economic outcomes of brexit, or why formula is as good as breast milk, I’m interested in differing opinions as a way to learn more myself. Yelling “BAN ABORTIONS” at me without any substance whatsoever and bashing me over the head with a placard makes me want to burn down the world.

Some of your examples are opinions not facts, so it is a little unreasonable if you think that people disagreeing with you makes them stupid.

68Anon · 15/11/2018 21:22

How do you know that Brexit will cause financial doom? A country has never left the EU before so at the moment it's all speculation. Maybe educated speculation, but still speculation. Until we leave, we will never know.

MrsGrindah · 15/11/2018 21:23

You do know that people are entitled to have other opinions and don’t have to justify themselves to you don’t you?

Wiggler1 · 15/11/2018 21:24

Where did I say anyone was stupid? I also clearly said I like to debate the opposing views, these are my opinions based on facts I have come across in my own research, if you have an alternate opinion please feel free to share it.

Or did you just want to illustrate exactly what I was talking about?

OP posts:
Wiggler1 · 15/11/2018 21:25

I didn’t say brexit will cause financial doom, it said it is likely to. This is based on an educated opinion, please provide evidence to the contrary.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 15/11/2018 21:25

TBH, OP. I refuse to work with the general public as they are utter, utter morons.

People tend to think in headlines and slogans and rarely go any deeper than that.

Wiggler1 · 15/11/2018 21:26

I never said they needed to justify themselves to me, but it sort of helps debate if you provide an opposing opinion.

OP posts:
halfwitpicker · 15/11/2018 21:26

OK

Wiggler1 · 15/11/2018 21:26

Thank you WTF, I thought I was going to have to ask Mumsnet to edit my OP to include the hard of reading too.

OP posts:
68Anon · 15/11/2018 21:27

Stating 'We KNOW' is not an opinion but a fact so I think you have clearly illustrated your own view point stated in your post.

I’m very much enjoying people illustrating exactly what I was talking about.

Knittink · 15/11/2018 21:31

I agree about some of the things you're irritated by, but tbf you pretty much did say people were stupid - what else does 'hard of thinking', or people 'failing to engage their brains' mean? You're surely not suggesting they are highly intelligent people who just have momentary idiotic lapses? Grin

Hyppolyta · 15/11/2018 21:31

Im with you OP, and would add people who name call rather than discuss anything.

MingoMingo · 15/11/2018 21:32

Soooo, you’re sick of reading other people’s opinions but think everyone should read a list of yours?
Right okay Hmm

garethsouthgatesmrs · 15/11/2018 21:32

Where did I say anyone was stupid?

well "hard of thinking" certainly implies stupid.

I object to your attitude despite agreeing with most of your examples. The brexit one is DEFINITELY an opinion (which I share) and I would argue that the statement "animals have opinions" needs to be backed up. Regardless of this while I get your point if you debate with people in a manner similar to the way you present your OP I can imagine you may come across as someone who knows a lot but perhaps lacks emotional intelligence.

Wiggler1 · 15/11/2018 21:33

Maybe I should have caveated my ‘we KNOW’, with ‘we KNOW (as much as it’s possible to know anything at this single moment in time)’.

There, fixed it. Now would anyone like to engage on the actual point rather than picking my post to pieces?

OP posts:
VerbeenaBeeks · 15/11/2018 21:33

Where did I say anyone was stupid?

Well, the title alone calls anyone who disagrees with you hard of thinking, so that's just a slightly more polite way of saying stupid!

VerbeenaBeeks · 15/11/2018 21:34

Oh, and fed IS best. That doesn't mean I'm hard of thinking stupid to point that out.

garethsouthgatesmrs · 15/11/2018 21:35

also "fed is best" doesn't mean "breast is not best"

Momasita · 15/11/2018 21:35

I think trying to lump all these things together to try and make leave voters look silly is... Well... Silly 😂.

You may find it difficult to believe, OP, but not everyone has the superior comprehension and debating skills that you've been blessed with. Nevertheless they still have opinions, feelings, instincts that are just as valid as yours. Shock
