To be utterly fed up dealing with the hard of thinking

I am so so sick of listening to/reading the opinions of people who just fail to engage their brains for more than a nanosecond on any subject that takes their fancy.

“We voted leave/brexit means brexit”

“Trans women are women”

“Fed is best”

“Women just aren’t as good at corporate jobs”

“Vaccines cause autism”

“Animals don’t have emotions/opinions”

Ad infinitum. We KNOW that brexit is likely to lead to economic doom (at least for a period), trans women are not biological women, breast is actually best for the health outcomes of mother and baby at population level (although there are very valid reasons it may not be for individuals), women are just as successful in the corporate world if they’re not held back by men (or other women), vaccines do not cause autism, animals very visibly do have emotions/opinions, if you bother to watch them for long enough, etc etc etc.

I know this is likely to be controversial because of the examples I’ve used, but my point is that people just don’t seem to be able to engage with the slightest piece of research or evidence that their opinions are not in line with the facts.

I can understand knowing a surface level about a topic and getting things wrong, we’re all learning, but listening to people shouting their world view progressively louder, despite all evidence to the contrary, is utterly infuriating.

If you have a well thought out opposing view I’m more than happy to debate, tell me about the research you’ve done on potential economic outcomes of brexit, or why formula is as good as breast milk, I’m interested in differing opinions as a way to learn more myself. Yelling “BAN ABORTIONS” at me without any substance whatsoever and bashing me over the head with a placard makes me want to burn down the world.

I don’t believe that there are ‘stupid’ people, I do believe that there are people who education has failed, and very smart people who don’t engage their brains.

Good spot on the lack of emotional intelligence (undergoing testing for autism), but this isn’t how I would present my thoughts to someone in conversation, it was more of a rant.

”animals have opinions” Grin
I’d love to hear some of them.

Wiggler1 · 15/11/2018 21:38

This isn’t about brexit, it’s about unsupported opinions in general.

Wot, so people who don't agree wiv ya's opinion is a bit fick?

Wiggler1 · 15/11/2018 21:40

Animals have lots of opinions on things, just ask one. Probably don’t have many thoughts on brexit though Grin

PortiaCastis · 15/11/2018 21:40

People are not stupid just because they don't agree with your superior knowledge, we're all entitled to post without being called hard of thinking which is insulting

Seriously, is no one reading my posts? I just said I don’t believe people are stupid (or thick, or morons), just that people don’t think beyond what they’re told in a lot of cases.

OP posts:
VerbeenaBeeks · 15/11/2018 21:42

Me too @babycatcher411 Grin

Not cow's opinion though. They're moo. They'll be moo points.
clearly been watching too much Friends, soz Grin

Wiggler1 · 15/11/2018 21:43

I said in my post I wanted people to debate, I change my mind about things all the time based on new data, I’m very open to informed discussion. Just not ‘you’re wrong (you moron)’.

OP posts:
Knittink · 15/11/2018 21:46

Most of your examples have uninformed people on both sides of the argument though. I'm very much a remainer, but it would be utterly unreasonable of me to assume that all remainers had a rigorous knowledge of the full implications of Brexit (unlike those woefully ignorant Brexiteers). I don't think many normal folk were that well-informed- it's a complex issue. Likewise I'm sure there is much misinformation and muddle-headedness on both sides about breastfeeding. The hard of thinking aren't necessarily all on the opposite side to you, OP.

Wiggler1 · 15/11/2018 21:46

I knew the animal ones would be controversial. Here’s a book on the subject.

Thank about a person with average intelligence. That person is smarter than 50% of the population.

Sounds snobby sure. But. Well. There it is.

ReflectionsofParadise · 15/11/2018 21:48

Erm don't put all of us leave voters in with woke knobheads who think ladydicks are a thing. Thanks.

KlutzyDraconequus · 15/11/2018 21:48

just that people don’t think beyond what they’re told in a lot of cases

So let us see your personal research into the opinions you state.
How long did you study Brexit and breastfeeding? Did you have a big enough sample size so as to form an independently researched and referenced report?

No?

OMFG.. don't tell me YOU'RE believing what someone told you?
I'm shocked... Truly shocked..

IncomingCannonFire · 15/11/2018 21:48

Some corkers here.
What OP was trying to say is she is tired of hearing people parrot soundbites as fact, without being able to provide a reasoned or reasonable argument/ discussion or evidence to back up their claims.
But Op was not as articulate or polite.

MadeleineMaxwell · 15/11/2018 21:49

If we're on about the creeping entrenchment of positions across the political spectrum, and the diminishing respect for experts, then I'm with you. I feel we have lost the art of nuance in public debate and therefore public life. Everything is reduced to meaningless soundbites.

I would also agree that the mere holding of an opinion does not make that opinion factually correct or substantively equal to any other opinion. Objective reality is still a thing.

I'm not angry like you, though, OP. I'm sad and occasionally worried.

CurbsideProphet · 15/11/2018 21:50

Wiggler1 the only reason to venture to the bottom half of the internet (ie the comments section of online tabloids) is to create a Found Poem a la Dave Gorman. The rest of the time it is best avoided Grin

ReflectionsofParadise · 15/11/2018 21:51

Also OP people don't have to give you reasons, justifications or explanations to why they think or feel what they do.

They don't owe you that or anyone else. You're not a judge. And even then they wouldn't.

The fact you can't see that your op is quite disturbing is somewhat concerning. Maybe you do also come across that way in real life.

CurbsideProphet · 15/11/2018 21:52

MadeleineMaxwell just think of all the people who say "no debate" about anything related to women / the transgender issue.

mytieisascarf · 15/11/2018 21:53

@Babycatcher

These monkeys certainly have an opinion on the fairness of their wages.

MadeleineMaxwell · 15/11/2018 21:54

CurbsideProphet

That doesn't make me angry, either. It's just complete nonsense and will probably backfire on them sooner or later.

Whiskeyjar · 15/11/2018 21:54

I wonder what all those 'hard of thinking' people think of you, OP

Dalin · 15/11/2018 21:55

I get your point OP and I agree, it’s frustrating to hear someone’s view, that in discussion becomes apparent is lifted from a headline for example, as opposed to researched and pondered, whether or not their opinion is contrary to your own.

radiometer · 15/11/2018 21:55

"Fed is best" isn't "formula is better than breastmilk" it's "it's better to get food into them than letting them starve if things go wrong with your boobs" and as such, is sensible as fuck.
