To not be a mind reader and have DM blame me for something I did not know

Whatdoesitmatteranyway · 07/11/2018 11:53

Basic facts:

Staying at DM's three nights a weeks at the moment whilst working near her so basically staying in my old bedroom. Central heating boiler lives in the ward robe in my bedroom. Mother is disabled.

Last night DM says "I need to empty the meter cupboard out tomorrow as the gas man is coming". I took it at face value and didnt think any more of it.

Phone DM mid morning and got yelled at. Her complaints were

  1. She had to move my suitcase and dirty clothes from the floor in front of the airing cupboard/ward robe so she could empty it in order that the gas man can service the boiler. When I pointed out that she only said the gas man was coming out to meter she told me that anyone with any common sense would have known she meant the boiler. WTF? Apparently no one ever comes out to look at a gas meter if you're on a smart meter.
  1. She complained I hadnt made my bed and my jammies were on the floor. Since I didnt know anyone was going into my room I didnt bother.
  1. There is dry skin on the floor by the bed. This I will accept. I used footner on my feet that causes the skin to flake off. When I dried my feet after my shower this morning, there was skin on the floor. AS I didnt think anyone would go into my room today, I didnt get the hoover out at 6am and planned to vacuum it up tonight.
  1. There are spot of orange on the floor which she's blaming on orange juice I take to bed of a night. Except I make it up in a sports bottle. I'm not saying there isnt spots on the floor but (a) it isnt my orange juice and (b) the entire carpet is stained to fuck from where I spilt coffee and other stuff on it when I was a teenager over 20 years ago. I suspect it could be blood as I stubbed my toe over night and I think the nail bled.

Ultimately - all of this is because I didnt know the gas man was servicing the boiler in my room today and I assumed it was the gas meter as THAT IS WHAT SHE TOLD ME.

I will admit my mother has form for not using the correct words for anything and expecting you to work out what she means. All she had to do was mention needing to get into the wardrobe and I would have worked it out where as she said "gas meter cupboard".

YABU for being a guest and leaving your room in a state, not making your bed, leaving boys stains and dead skin on the carpet that your poor mum has had to clean up 🤮. If you don't want to be treated like a teenager stop living like one

MrsStrowman · 07/11/2018 11:56

*blood stains

ReturnofPrincessOzma · 07/11/2018 11:57

Ugh no, OP I’m a bit slovenly but you sound really scuzzy. You’re not a teenager anymore. Dead skin on the floor is rancid.

Believeitornot · 07/11/2018 11:59

Yabu that all sounds rank. Sorry

Just keep your room tidy! Jesus - foot scrapings??

BlueBug45 · 07/11/2018 12:01

YANBU - for not moving your suitcase out of the way without being told

YABU - you are well aware after decades that she frequently uses the wrong words so when she says something don't take it at face value. Secondly you should tidy up when you get up you are an adult not a slob and it isn't your house anymore - it doesn't have to be perfect but it does mean if someone has to go into the room for any reason considering the boiler is there you aren't embarrassed.

gamerchick · 07/11/2018 12:03

Oh dear, are you in teenager mode because you're in your mother's house? Grin

Come on OP, you should have clicked on. Why would she tell you someone was coming to read the meter? Telling you she needed a path cleared should have been you signal to clean up after yourself.

Skin on the floor? Seriously, do it into a bag or something.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 07/11/2018 12:04

Eeeeewww! Guilty as charged! What a tramp! Come on Op grow up a bit.

ifancyachinese · 07/11/2018 12:08

Yeah usually I think op's aren't being unreasonable on these posts but in this case YABU.

Even if you 'didn't know someone was going to be in your room' it's still gross not to have picked up the dry skin at the very least. I could maybe get over the not cleaning the cupboard out if you weren't aware they would need to get to it.

ThatWouldBeNO · 07/11/2018 12:11

Why do you take orange juice to bed at night? Must be bad for your teeth!

SuperstarDJ · 07/11/2018 12:17

Sorry but you sound as if you’ve reverted to living like a slovenly teenager again. The uncleaned dead skin and blood is particularly rank. Do you get on like that in your own house?

You sound slightly like a petulant child in your OP too. What age are you?

CantWaitToRetire · 07/11/2018 12:17

Well I agree with the others that you're a bit of a slob. It takes moments to make a bed and pick up dirty clothes and I don't even want to think about the dried skin! A dustpan and brush would have picked that up quietly.

Where is the smart meter in the house? Is it actually in a cupboard or on a wall somewhere? Would your DM normally have to empty a whole cupboard if there was presumably a meter reader coming?

user1981287 · 07/11/2018 12:17

Sorry but that's disgusting. You're in someone else's home. You ned to make sure that you respect it. YABU and its irrelevant whether someone was coming to look at the boiler/meter. You ought not to have left it like that.

user1981287 · 07/11/2018 12:17

I'm a little surprised you think anyone is going to side with you?!

MrDonut · 07/11/2018 12:22

When I pointed out that she only said the gas man was coming out to meter she told me that anyone with any common sense would have known she meant the boiler.

Oh, god. Sounds like my mum. Once she asked me to buy jam at the shop. I asked what kind and she said any kind was fine. So, I bought raspberry. She then got irritated because she already had a jar of raspberry jam. 🤦‍♀️

KC225 · 07/11/2018 12:22

YANBU for the gas meter/boiler mix up.

YABU for dry feet scrapings and blood on the floor.

How big is the bedroom, as a good will gesture why not offer to pay to have it re-carpeted. It shouldn't be too expensive and quite frankly it sounds as if the current one is a health hazard.

whifflesqueak · 07/11/2018 12:25

Ew I was eating my lunch.

PoshPenny · 07/11/2018 12:25

Your room sounds like a pigsty and that I suspect is the basis for her shouting. You are old enough to know better

cjt110 · 07/11/2018 12:25

You sound like you live in a fucking hovel.

RoboticMary · 07/11/2018 12:29

I think you know you’re unreasonable, and you don’t like being called out on it. In which case - stop being such a slob! Seriously, your room sounds gross. It’s not your home, it’s not your room anymore and you need to respect your mum’s home.

Chamomileteaplease · 07/11/2018 12:29

Orange juice at night?? That is so bad for your teeth.

Dvg · 07/11/2018 12:29

Yanbu BUT your room sounds disgusting and not that of an adult.

kaytee87 · 07/11/2018 12:32

You've left the room in a disgusting state. Not on in someone else's house. Imagine leaving dead skin on the floor < not envy
You'll rot your teeth drinking orange juice every night

KurriKurri · 07/11/2018 12:34

I think as a guest in someone's house, you should keep your room tidy - as you would in anyone else's house who wasn't your Mum.
Yes she used the wrong word, but she must have been really embarrassed -skin flakes on the floor?? - that's seriously rank - she should be able to take anyone into a room in her house and expect it to be clean and tidy even if it has a guest staying in it.

You need to stop calling it 'your room' it is your Mum's guest room that she is kindly letting you use.

PyongyangKipperbang · 07/11/2018 12:35

Hey OP, who knew your mum was on MN too?!

crochetmonkey74 · 07/11/2018 12:37
