Grown men pretending to be children

AIBU to be very worried that safeguarding has broken down in England. I have worked in several schools in London where some of the newly arrived “children” were grown men. We have complained to social services and they admitted that the pupils were blatantly men but there was nothing they could do.
These men are being put into classes and foster homes with actual children.
We do not allow adults without DBS checks to have unfettered access to children unless they pretend to be children.
Head teachers hands are also tied. The only way to change things seems to be through parent complaints like in the story below. This is not safeguarding. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-suffolk-46070239

I'll try not very good at it

This site links to the Swedish articles. Extract from it He had beaten his daughters and his wife, and among other things, “whipped” them with a long charging cord. newspaper Nyheter Idag reveals that the man was sentenced to nine months in jail for three cases of assault of his own wife and their two children.

"Genuine" children would still be helped.

How would you ensure this, Hadenough? Since plenty of people here on this thread don't understand that it's possible to be a six-footer with facial hair and look like a man and still be just sixteen? (I know, because I have one just like that at home. He's by no means unusual amongst his friends. I don't think it's a coincidence that most of them are not white.)

"There are desperate 30 year olds wanting an education so we put them in schools to help them get ahead so they don’t just clean toilets."

We have desperate children UK born, who the education system are failing. Some, because of the poverty of their Parents, because of a lack of investment in schools, others because of SN, but it all boils down to Austerity and Cuts.

And some because they are refugees.

Why do Men get to have the funds directed at them?

I'm appalled by the conditions that some refugee families in the UK are living in. It's common to see Mothers share accommodation to the point that there are people sleeping in every room, so they can share resources. This has an effect on the children's attainment

These Women would be vilified on here if they went to work cash-in-hand etc.

It always seems that any behaviour of the Men get defended.

These Men then get access to very vulnerable girls (and boys), but that's OK, because otherwise they might have to do the jobs we condemn people with little education to do, which is often the jobs that Women traditionally do.

ArcheryAnnie, I can remember fancying Taylor Lautner when I saw a picture of him topless and then feeling ashamed of myself when I found out he was 17. But watching Twilight it's obvious how old he is.

As said, be around the Teens and it's clear that they are young. Likewise when Men try to claim they couldn't have possibly known how old an underage girl was, because she was wearing make-up.

My middle DD was very Mature and well developed. I've mixed with Teens from conservative religions, so their demeanor is different.

But you can tell that they aren't emotionally mature and an Adult.

I’m sure there are liars. I’m not sure I’m as damning of them as others because I imagine their lives are dreadful

But isn't there a risk here of assuming hearsay to be evidence?

Isn't it at least possible that someone who's already lied and cheated their way into a country will also lie about their "home circumstances" if challenged about their right to be here?

zzzzz I'd suggest that some are undoubtably escaping from horrors and others are seizing an opportunity to "borrow the stories" of the desperate, in the hope of also being admitted

The key seems to be identifying the difference - not least so that resources can be focused on those most in need

continuallychargingmyphone · 07/11/2018 15:47

People still claiming the ageing process means schools in war torn countries are filled with teenagers who look in their forties?

They really, really don’t.

Zzzzz many of the “children” I have met are Albanian and claim to be escaping from a blood feud in Albania. They all have the same story and are all 21+

Very sad. Sometimes people have to lie to save their lives. It happened during the holocaust, young men doctored their documentation to escape to places like Windermere otherwise they'd have died in labour camps.
We had an 19 year old in our class from Chechnya who had seen things happen to his family I won't even write here.

I'm not in the UK

OlennasWimple · 07/11/2018 18:00

zzzzz - but asylum isn't granted because the person is from a war-torn country, asylum is only granted to people with a well-founded fear of persecution (because of their religion, sexuality, political beliefs etc). Which is another reason to claim to be a minor- their application for asylum would be unsuccessful, but at least this way they get a foot in the door to stay in the UK legally for a few years

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/11/2018 18:00

Most immigrants here are from the Middle East

I thought the "top three", so to speak, were India, Pakistan and Poland ...?

I’m torn. Looking at the photo it’s ‘obvious’ to me he is at least 30 but I’m 32 and get ID’d for 15 rated films and lottery tickets in cinemas and shops that I don’t regularly frequent and have to carry ID everywhere. I also briefly worked in a school and the amount of times I got stopped in the corridors and “told off” and questioned by the teachers as to why I was not wearing the school uniform was one of the reasons I stopped doing what I did in the end.

I don’t think the tests are unethical but we’re living in a time when it’s more important to care about a minority of people’s feelings rather than the safety of the majority

AnneElliott · 07/11/2018 22:00

It is mainly men zzzzz. I saw very few female unaccompanied minors during my time in immigration.

I hate the way some people try to make others feel guilty over legitimate concerns for children's physical safety.

Agreed delta
