I’m sure I’m not the only person to have figured this out, but before I started doing it, I’d never seen or heard of it. So, herewith my cheater’s guide to faff-free mashed potato:

Put potatoes in microwave until they’re done all the way through.

Cut in half.

Scoop potato out of skin straight onto plate.

Add butter and smush with fork. Add grated cheese to taste.

Enjoy mashed potato with no peeling, chopping, boiling or washing up afterwards.

So I bought the instant Idaho mash to see if I could get it past DH- a mashed potato conoisseue, so he claims. He spotted it after about two forkfuls. Said it wasn't too bad though. I thought it was ok but not like real mash. Dh said it was 'too 'light' on the fork, not substantial enough, no weight to it, not enough heft' whatever that means.

arghhelpme · 04/11/2018 18:50

Another one here for idahoan mash. My eldest 2 kids have never been fond of mash but will tuck straight into the butter and herb idahoan mash.

Or if I really have to use normal potatoes then a potato ricer gives the best results. Not keen on microwaved potatoes, they never seem quite as good as boiled or baked.

WindyWednesday · 04/11/2018 18:52

Instant mash is v expensive compared to spuds, but that’s a given when you enter into the world of convenience.

It’s finefor a quickie, but I wouldn’t use it all the time. Although I will try the M&S version.

Bobbi73 · 04/11/2018 18:52

I mostly get the kids to cook it. I help with the boiling water as my eldest is 8 but he does the rest and my youngest mashes it. Super easy!

Carriecakes80 · 04/11/2018 18:59

Lol Am I the only one who won't microwave 'em. I know, I could save loadsa time, but I find they are fluffiest and tastiest when boiled, kept in the skins, and just wack the fudge out of them with my masher! real butter, some chives, a little cream cheese, a tad of hot milk and they are the doggies gonads! :-D x
I enjoy the process - maybe I'm sad! lol

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 04/11/2018 18:59

No, you’ve all got it wrong! You need to STEAM the peeled, chunked potatoes, so they cook in their own moisture but don’t go soggy. Me, I put them through a ricer and gently stir in butter and nutmeg, and a splash of milk for creaminess.

Peeling potatoes is a chore unless you have a really good peeler, and then it’s a doddle.

connoisseur!

LMW1990 · 04/11/2018 19:13

Frozen mash 6 minutes in the microwave with a blob of butter and dash of double cream or milk (cheese and whole grain mustard if we're feeling posh)

tolerable · 04/11/2018 19:17

tell me frozen mash isnt real,please?..if you gony do "jacket potatoes in micro you wanna prick tati couple of times, with a fork then wrap in kleenex roll-or similar(andrex does, but sticks, skin coming off anyhow tho.allow 7-10 mins per fist sized potato sometimes longer..you also...could just chop small boil in salted water for 17-20 mins(less if pinks, but til soft when stick fork in,drain and hit with a tati masher milk n butter....ffs

safariboot · 04/11/2018 19:22

My mashed potato cheat: Don't bother doing mashes potatoes Grin

But if I do: Peel them Steam them then mash them with a masher and a knob of butter.

And AIBU to think that homemade mash should be slightly lumpy? If it's totally smooth blended it tastes like the shop-bought ready made stuff.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/11/2018 19:23

Frozen mash ingredients - Potato, Milk, Salt & Pepper. What's not to love?

WhiteDust · 04/11/2018 19:25

I do what you do OP!
Mash is always sloppy when I boil the potatoes even though I drain them well.
I hate 'creamy mash' Fluffy is best!

NotTheFordType · 04/11/2018 19:30

Ooh, trip to Asda to stock up on idahoan for me!
It's so, so, so much nicer than Smash.

ITS FUCKING MINGING
what seriusly what

NotTheFordType · 04/11/2018 19:31

I apologise for responding to an earlier thread but FFS

nectarinenotpeach · 04/11/2018 19:55

frozen mash frozen mash frozen mash. Will never make my own again. Always get complimented on it when I serve it to guests, they say its the best mash they've ever eaten! Sometimes jazz it up with fresh herbs (chives are the best) for added authenticity. On the other hand I will also gladly labour over making Dauphinoise potatoes for a large dinner party -so I'm not totally lazy- ;)

EggysMom · 04/11/2018 20:25

Don't know why everybody worries about the Daily Fail stealing stories - as far as I can see, it's the Mirror who use MumsNet as a resource ... yes, this thread has made it to the Mirror Online today.

Fresta · 04/11/2018 20:29

We've been having the kitchen replaced so only had a microwave for last few weeks. Sainsbury's ready made mash is easy, but in no way replaces freshly made homemade mash! It's very dry and heavy!

Fififerry1 · 04/11/2018 20:52

Sorry to hijack but let me tell you my top tip for roast potatoes.
Dissolve a Knorr vegetable stock cube in the fat/oil before tossing the parboiled and shaken potatoes in it.
Makes them salty and crunchy. Delicious.

tolerable · 04/11/2018 21:31

@jellie ellie. homegrown potatoes are the most amazing fast cook potatoes.ever...failing that "kerrs pink, peeled n chunked take 10-15mins tops. #all my potatos are golden wonders...lol

SpaceCannotBeLeftBlank · 04/11/2018 21:40

I think there should be some kind of profit share between the Mirror and mumsnet posters since we generate so much of their content for them.

SpaceCannotBeLeftBlank · 04/11/2018 21:42

And lol @ the Mirror having to steal a thread about potatoes so it has something to talk about.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 04/11/2018 21:46

The thing about is that they managed to make it sound more boring than the actual thread, that's got to be some kind of skill! :o

SpaceCannotBeLeftBlank · 04/11/2018 21:49

Hahahahaha!
