To tell you my mashed potato cheat?

I’m sure I’m not the only person to have figured this out, but before I started doing it, I’d never seen or heard of it. So, herewith my cheater’s guide to faff-free mashed potato:

Put potatoes in microwave until they’re done all the way through.

Cut in half.

Scoop potato out of skin straight onto plate.

Add butter and smush with fork. Add grated cheese to taste.

Enjoy mashed potato with no peeling, chopping, boiling or washing up afterwards.

My ultimate lazy tea is beef meatballs in meatball sauce (asda jar)peas and mash!

I used to freeze mash in old weaning pots when my eldest was a lone child then microwave it with some butter. A fish finger or two in my mini oven and a bit of frozen veg! Easy after a day at work when we had a Friday night takeaway once he was in bed!

Tinned potatoes make awful mash. They are awful as just boiled potatoes too imo.

Sb74 · 05/11/2018 20:18

Poor OP. So excited. I like your suggestion and will give it a go. Thank you. X

OhFlipMama · 05/11/2018 20:56

I've never attempted to mash with tinned potatoes but they are very good for omelettes.

Bluntness100 · 05/11/2018 20:58

I buy fresh ready made mash and just add butter, salt, cheese etc. The cheat you mention isn't cheating enough for me.

I just throw potatoes straight in the bin... :o

Bluntness100 · 05/11/2018 21:06

It's the peeling I can't be doing with. Life's too short.

Cuddlykitten123 · 05/11/2018 21:12

It's a fab cheat for just one or two small portions for the kids

Yvbmioasp · 05/11/2018 22:32

I always buy Albert Rooster reds. They make good mash and also good roasties. Buy a decent potato peeler and you’re good to go.

Loyaultemelie · 05/11/2018 22:48

I recently discovered baked mashed potatoes! Yum. I'm excited though my microwave blew up about a month ago and I haven't got round to replacing it (when did microwaves get so expensive?!) so now it wouldn't be so much a cheat as a faff by the time I oven baked them Blush

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 06/11/2018 18:04

Is it just me or have the DM managed to leave out all the amusing comments and make it sound like boring housewives twittering on....?

SpaceCannotBeLeftBlank · 06/11/2018 18:20

Geordie Grieg is really turning things around over there.

No,no,no, mashed potatoes need to be boiled then mashed with butter. If done in microwave then inside scooped out they are not mashed potatoes imo. Plus by the time the potatoes are cool enough to take skin off without burning hands it’s not as hot as you want and it does take longer to do this at the end than just straining potatoes and mashing them.

MammaSchwifty · 08/11/2018 07:52

Shit, I need to become a daily mail journalist. What a doss.

bobstersmum · 08/11/2018 16:51

Well, I am a real fresh food freak I cannot stand instant mash BUT after this thread I have bought some Idahoan mash and we have just had it for dinner with braising steak and gravy, it was amazing!! I am going to stock up and save myself some time, it's the best mash I've tasted apart from my own fresh mash. Thank you to the people that mentioned it :)

NutElla5x · 08/11/2018 19:08

Dissolve a Knorr vegetable stock cube in the fat/oil before tossing the parboiled and shaken potatoes in it
Makes them salty and crunchy. Delicious.
Now this sounds like an interesting tip.I will definitely give this a go,so thank you to the person who posted it.

I literally just re searched for this thread to say the same, they brought it up on This Morning! John torode made mash using "a Mumsnet users method" Shock

DaffydownClock · 12/11/2018 09:09

Idaho instant potato is full of additives, why on earth would anyone want to feed that to their family?
Smash isn't far behind - 'Made with real potatoes' - is it so synthetic it has to tell you this?
I believe in eating food as unadulterated as possible, for goodness sake make it from potatoes!

Lozz22 · 12/11/2018 14:36

I used to use frozen or ready made chilled mash because no matter what I did I could never get lump free mash and I can't stand different textures in foods. Then I invested in a potato ricer. Perfect lump free mashed potatoes and I know everything that's added into them.

Paulart · 16/12/2020 07:51

Hello - I think microwave potatoes is just pure lazy...I have been making 40min dinners for last 20yrs...if you buy new potatoes they keep fresh in the fridge... a light peel some skin adds vitamin D to mash, so a light peel - into pot 15mins on the boil your done....meat-or-fish ...broccoli and your done. Its cooking fashion - overTT.

SophieJo · 16/12/2020 07:57

Aunt Bessie’s frozen mash or Asda. Minutes in the microwave, perfect every time.
