I’m sure I’m not the only person to have figured this out, but before I started doing it, I’d never seen or heard of it. So, herewith my cheater’s guide to faff-free mashed potato:

Put potatoes in microwave until they’re done all the way through.

Cut in half.

Scoop potato out of skin straight onto plate.

Add butter and smush with fork. Add grated cheese to taste.

Enjoy mashed potato with no peeling, chopping, boiling or washing up afterwards.

Love a bit of bubble
Baked spuds ok in microwave, but nice finished in oven (alongside ready dinner, oops) for crispy skin. Missing point, but handy for bonfire night.
My dad boiled new potatoes in skins, anyone fussy peeled theirs at the table

Rather late to this thread (sums up my life really), but firstly wanted to thank BertrandRussell for the Anchovy mash idea, have just googled and will definitely be trying that. Also - the Pommes Aligote recipe - OMG heaven on a plate, although I don't think that is going to help my weight loss plan. Off topic, but God, I miss being able to buy tomme cheese in the local supermarket.

Topseyt · 04/11/2018 12:36

Frozen mash here. I'd agree that it is the dog's bollocks.

TheCakeCrusader · 04/11/2018 15:11

I’ve just tried out the Idahoan mash (classic flavour) and although the texture feels fine when reconstituted, there is a slight after taste (from the added flavourings in product) that give it away. A notch on from Smash mash and an okay- ish substitute but I don’t think you can beat proper mash! 😀

You can make a decent quick leek and potato soup with that instant mash too. Make up chicken stock and add mash until you get the consistency you want. Fry off a thinly chopped leek and add. Mix and chuck in some cheese. It's not fantastic but as a quick fix it's pretty nice.

Raera · 04/11/2018 15:45

Try the OP's method but with a whole swede which are a nightmare to peel. Put the whole thing in the microwave for 10-12 minutes, then turn over for another 10-12 minutes.
When it's cooled a bit, the skin will pull off easily, then mash it up with butter and seasoning.
It's known as "Singing Swede" because of the noise it makes during cooking!

NaturalBornWoman · 04/11/2018 16:00

See I've tried that swede thing after reading it on here before and it didn't work, the swede wasn't evenly cooked.

Desmondo2016 · 04/11/2018 16:32

OP I do it your way for my toddler. I doit the traditional way for the whole family tho. Or buy Ikea frozen mash lol, it's AMAZING!!

nosleepforme · 04/11/2018 17:12

Lol in the middle of boiling mine up... So clever

MadMum101 · 04/11/2018 17:16

Very suspicious of posters who don't peel their spuds for mash Confused. I mean if you're using 'old' potatoes how can you not?

I cook for 5 adults and 1 primary aged kid so ready made mash is nowhere near cost effective for the lesser effort or the taste and I consider the actual potato as part of the nutrition of the meal so wouldn't use packet stuff.

Would love someone to invent (for home use, I've seen one in a restaurant) a device that peels potatoes as I bloody hate it and there's so many of the buggers to do!

BertrandRussell · 04/11/2018 17:20

The only time I wouldn't peel for mash is if I was using a potato ricer. And my dp-who is masher in chief-despises ricers in the way only a Yorkshireman faced with a bit of "bloody Southern ponciness" can despise something.....

Bananacakes · 04/11/2018 17:23

That’s how we do quick jacket potatoes. And for the members of the family (just like we do with standard jacket potatoes) we scoop the inside out. It’s not easy mashed potatoes for a family because it’s very time consuming.
My mashed potato hack for large family is to cook the potatoes and then use an electric whisk (not a blender or you get purée) and use the whisk with butter and dash of milk or cream.

Bananacakes · 04/11/2018 17:25

I tried instant mash many years ago and I’m not a snob but I couldn’t feed that to my kids. And it would be so expensive.

bobstersmum · 04/11/2018 17:33

My dh prefers instant mash. I hate it. On the packet it says made from real potatoes! What else could it be made from!!

pollymere · 04/11/2018 17:33

When you do baked potatoes, do some extra then freeze them for handy lunches, rather than buying prefrozen ones.

YearOfYouRemember · 04/11/2018 17:58

@ohello - I'd like to know more about the fake cheese sauce please.

onegiftedgal · 04/11/2018 18:06

Wtf - frozen mash? I've heard it all now.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/11/2018 18:10

Frozen mash was a godsend for my elderly DM. She could just take out a little bit and microwave it rather than have to deal with peelers or boiling water for powdered.

EerieSilence · 04/11/2018 18:17

I have the Tupperware steamer so for me it's just chopping them, adding salt and off to the microwave for 15 minutes. Mash with double cream and add some nutmeg, done.

redsummershoes · 04/11/2018 18:18

tbh I'm good a peeling spuds and find it easier than scooping out lava hot potato from skins

MuddyWellyNelly · 04/11/2018 18:21

I can't quite bring myself to read through 8 pages of mashed potato chat to find out if anyone has said "yes, Nigella mentions this in her very first book (How to Eat) from 20 years ago" Grin.

peridito · 04/11/2018 18:25

Well don't expect us dedicated posters to tell you Muddy

lightweight ! Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/11/2018 18:45

I always get a bit confused about what I've missed when posters talk about 8 pages of posts. I've set mine to 100 posts per page so this is the end of page 2...:o

WindyWednesday · 04/11/2018 18:49

I think mine is set to 1000 posts...
