This is one of the most apt political cartoon I’ve seen.

Jon Ossoff's victorious opponent in that closely watched run off from last year, Karen Handel, was defeated by Lucy McBath.

An interesting thing about the Whitaker recusal question is that if it turns on whether Sam Clovis is "substantially involved in conduct that is the subject" of the Mueller probe, the person ethics officials would likely turn to for info on Clovis's role is.....Rod Rosenstein.

lettuceWrap · 08/11/2018 14:59

I hope justice RGB is ok.
My first thought was why did she fall? I sincerely hope it wasn't the result of a serious medical issue such as stroke.
My grandma had a nasty fall caused by a (thankfully fairly minor) stroke.

AcrossthePond55 · 08/11/2018 15:16

They need to wrap RBG in cotton wool and have a three person escort for her 24/7! We cannot afford to lose her and the same goes for Sotomayor, Kagan, or Breyer.

They are poised to win more seats this year than they did in 2006, despite far fewer opportunities

Just an FYI, Whitaker can serve as acting AG for 220 days (around 7 months) as a 'temp' without Senate approval. Not that that means anything really, since the GOP-led Senate would just rubber stamp him anyway.

Remember that AG nominations are approved by the Senate only. The House has no voice in it. So even if a formal nomination is made after swearing in the new House (3 Jan 2019) it won't make a bit of difference.

Former NJ Governor Chris Christie is under consideration to become Attorney General, replacing Sessions, according to a source familiar. Matt Whitaker is currently acting Attorney General.

Christie, like Sessions, was involved in the Trump campaign. Would Trump risk similar recusal questions?

BolleauxtoBankers · 08/11/2018 16:08

Interesting article on Trump's loyalties (to himself and some members of his family, perhaps, maybe, on a good day) and others' loyalty to the Office, not the person, of the President.

Comment from The Beast Inside.

.... The day we all knew was coming has finally arrived: Donald Trump fired Jeff Sessionss_, ending the extended ritual humiliation of the attorney general whom the president never forgave for failing to put him above the law.....

Sorry for the profanity, but fuck several ducks, I'm FURIOUS.

So much going on, it makes the head spin.

Lucy McBath's victory in the GA 6 is GREAT news! She became a gun safety activist after her son was murdered in 2012 Sad. This was an incredibly hard-fought seat, and she will make a wonderful Congresswoman!

GrinitchSpinach · 08/11/2018 17:26

Apologies if this was posted earlier and I missed it, but Xochitl Torres Small has flipped the NM-2! It was first called for her Republican opponent, but as the vote count continued Xochitl emerged victorious. Happy to add another smart, energetic young Latina to our caucus!

Roussette · 08/11/2018 17:50

I can't link to it but there's a clip on CNN from Don Lemon last night about Sessions, and how his replacement was a guest several times on Lemons' programme, and proposed a idea about how POTUS could shut down Meuller by starving the inquiry of cash

I read somewhere that even if Whitaker tries to starve the inquiry of cash, because of budgets all decided, he won't be able to do that till next June. Let's hope Mueller can carry on his work without interference.

And this is why Dems taking over the House is a game changer. Remember that if Whitaker denies any requests/recommendations made by Mueller, he is required under the SC regs to notify the chair and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. And now they can haul him in.

America as Enemy of Europe?

France's Macron is advocating a Euro Army.

"We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the United States of America."

The US as a European enemy is completely beyond comprehension as we celebrate the 100th year of armistice.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 08/11/2018 18:45

I’m honestly not being snarky but are there any reasons one would not vote for an African American person purely because they’re Africans American that aren’t racist?

“I think you know there are a lot of white folks out there who are not necessarily racist who felt uncomfortable for the first time in their lives about whether or not they wanted to vote for an African-American,” Sanders told The Daily Beast, referencing the close contests involving Andrew Gillum in Florida and Stacey Abrams in Georgia and that ads run against the two.
