This is one of the most apt political cartoon I’ve seen.

Thank you for all this information, Pain.
This must surely be good news?
Oklahoma City turns blue for first time in decades

Kept track until the early hours and saw enough to warrant getting some sleep. Good news overall. Star Now time to catch up on all the details - well done all you MNetters in the US! Glitterball

myzikk.com/2018/11/07/the-coming-showdown-between-donald-trump-and-congress/

This is an FT article by Edward Luce. Original behind a paywall:

Tuesday night reinforced the reality of an increasingly racialised US partisan divide. That suits Mr Trump well. The next few months will offer a spectacle rarely glimpsed in US politics.
One branch of government will be looking for evidence to argue that the president is a criminal. He, in turn, will seek to brand his accusers as un-American. In the midst of this, Robert Mueller, the special counsel, will be finalising his report into allegations that the 2016 Trump campaign colluded with Russia.
Many things are possible; an impeachment process against Mr Trump; the firing of Mr Mueller; a Supreme Court siding with Mr Trump against publication of his tax returns. And so on.
If you thought the last two years were interesting, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

CaveMum · 07/11/2018 06:54

Waking up to good, though not amazing, news.

Georgia is so tight - 51% REP, 48% DEM with 97% reporting. Come on Stacey!

BolleauxtoBankers · 07/11/2018 06:55

I am so dispirited, but also absolutely fuming about this:

Brian Kemp is currently leading Stacey Abrams by 220,000 votes.

He purged 320,000 people form the Georgia voter rolls.

This is why the GOP does everything it can to disenfranchise and suppress.

I'm knackered. Followed it on my phone between 2 and 4am and here I am awake early Angry

Thanks everyone for all your comments.

Gutted about Andrew Gillum and Beto O'Rourke who has conceded with a heartfelt speech. That man will go far.

I am gobsmacked at the queues, the machines not working, no power cords, how can this be? Also gutted that the Republicans have increased their majority in the Senate.

When a previous tweet by Krassenstein talks of impeachment. How? Am I right in saying even if it got past the House, it won't of course get past the Senate?

But well done all of you in US voting blue, for the result in the House. Such good news, and I hope they stall and obstruct for the next two years, just like the GOP did to Obama.

Roussette · 07/11/2018 06:58

That is appalling Bolleaux

Lweji · 07/11/2018 06:58

I woke up today to see that Trump considered tonight as a "Tremendous success".
He would but it looks for nobody really.
He wouldn't like it, but he sounds like the communist party in Portugal. Grin

One president called it a thumping, one called it a shellacking. This president calls his party losing the House a "tremendous success."

BolleauxtoBankers · 07/11/2018 07:18

I've just been sent this from someone in Canada. It is over a year old but has cheered my right up! You probably know it already, but have some light relief.

Lweji · 07/11/2018 07:19

They did increase Senate majority.
Now he can blame Democrats for his lack of success and knows anything against him will be stopped at the Senate.
I'd say it worked out for him and Democrats missed a trick somewhere.

Bill Clinton was the last President to remove a sitting President from office. Still, it was a tired Bush after 2 terms of Reagan.
I suspect Trump will peak earlier than most. With any luck he'll die be killed by his wife in his sleep like Pres. Underwood.

BolleauxtoBankers · 07/11/2018 07:23

*sorry, me not my.

Roussette, absolutely, lets hope the Democrats are worse for Trump than the GOP was for Obama.

I'm still cross though. Those huge swathes of red across the map of the US. It's just so WRONG.

woman11017 · 07/11/2018 07:32

One more thing... imagine how big Dem wins would be if there weren’t voter suppression
Sweet win for Dems of the House.
I guess I would say that I'm 'quietly pleased
Have to hold our nerve with this one; I'm in awe of the Dem workers and voters.

CaveMum · 07/11/2018 07:40

Georgia has declared. 50.8% REP 40.3% DEM. Just 94,000 votes in it.

Gutted.

“There’s only been 5 times in the last 105 years that an incumbent President has won seats in the Senate in the off year election. Mr. Trump has magic about him. This guy has magic coming out of his ears. He is an astonishing vote getter & campaigner. The Republicans are.........

....unbelievably lucky to have him and I’m just awed at how well they’ve done. It’s all the Trump magic - Trump is the magic man. Incredible, he’s got the entire media against him, attacking him every day, and he pulls out these enormous wins.” Ben Stein, “The Capitalist Code”

America is undergoing the kind of slow erosion of democracy that the Voting Rights Act was intended to fight.

I think with a lot of high hopes crashing for Democratic voters in places like Florida and with Beto, there is maybe a drastic underappreciation of how Democratic control of the House will change the course of this country. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a very big deal.
