This is one of the most apt political cartoon I’ve seen.

BREAKING: Jacky Rosen (D) wins Nevada Senate, unseating Dean Heller (R), @NBCNews projects.

Heller called Rosen to concede. http://nbcnews.to/LiveBlog

Any one got the stats on how many more women have been elected?

Abrams is still not conceding?

The race for Texas' 23rd district was called for Republican Will Hurd hours ago. But now, with 100% of precincts reporting, his Democratic opponent is up by 282 votes. That + more results: (link: lat.ms/2AQsc1X )

@NBCNews
A record number of women were elected to the House of Representatives on Tuesday. As of early Wednesday morning, at least 89 women had won seats, breaking the current session's record of 84 women.

See how all the women fared: (link: nbcnews.to/2DrAwas )

I don’t understand the voter suppression. How are they suppressed.

Many ways.
By defining voting districts so that voters for one party are distributed but always on a minority between different districts, or all in a single one leaving all others to be taken by the other party.
By refusing their registration to vote (usually by not having acceptable ID).
By limiting voting hours and stations. It's a work day.

True democracy in action.

Compare with Portugal: districts have been set for decades, mandatory photo ID, automatic voter registration number and elections always on a Sunday.

Good chance that the House, Senate and presidential race will all be competitive in 2020.

Jennifer Cohen has been tracking the voting machine problems for months was also annoyed that O'Rourke and Gillum conceded too quickly given the problems. I hope Abrams hangs in there. What happened in Georgia was a disgrace.

The California ballot this November had about 50 decisions to make on it. Many people try to do early voting just so they can carefully research their decisions. But early voting isn't even allowed in some states (Alabama, I'm looking at you). North Dakota declared the voter ID had to have a street address; native Americans have fixed abodes but not street addresses so effectively disenfranchised.

Dunno if this graphic is true, but it sure got my attention. Look at imbalance betw. popular vote & resulting representation. From HuffPost.

American politics is insanely expensive! Beto O'Rourke raised more than $70m.

That's more than TOTAL all-party spending on any UK general election EVER.

QuietContraryMary · 07/11/2018 08:58

"Good chance that the House, Senate and presidential race will all be competitive in 2020."

The House & President are kind of competitive by definition in that they are 'all-at-once'.

The Senate is looking like going to 55-45 currently.

Competitive Senate races for 2020:

Alabama (Doug Jones , D)
Arizona (vacant, R)
Colorado (Cory Gardner, R)
Georgia (David Purdue, R)
Iowa (Joni Ernst, R)
Kentucky (Mitch McConnell, R)
Maine (Susan Collins, R)
Montana (Steve Daines, R)
North Carolina (Thom Tillis, R)

Alabama is a likely R pickup, which would leave the Ds needing 7 pickups out of 8, which isn't as easy as it seems with the likes of Collins having a high personal vote despite being in a blue state.

The likely possibilities are D President, D House, R Senate, or R House, President & Senate.

It looks like the students who survived the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting this February, and the parents of their classmates who were killed, will be living in a state with an NRA-endorsed governor and two NRA-endorsed senators. A lot of grief and anger in Parkland tonight.

Morning, all! I guess I napped from about 1 am to 5 am Eastern... bleh!

Even though it's not the sweeping tsunami for which some of us couldn't help but hope, this is a very good result for Democrats.

We always knew the path to flip the Senate was almost impossible. Gillum and Beto's losses hurt, but I don't think they're finished in politics. These races raised their national profiles immensely, and people loved what they saw. I think Beto in particular could very likely be on the Democratic ticket (either as P or VP nominee) in 2020.

Florida has been breaking my heart since 2000. (Pour one out for Al Gore...) I hope that the tremendous step of re-enfranchising felons who have served their time will be enough to push that state back to the light in 2020. Will take much organizing and energy, but I know we've got it. We're no quitters!

For now, I blame Florida Man:

Collins having a high personal vote despite being in a blue state.

Collins is going DOWN in 2020, if she runs. Her constituents begged her not to vote for Kavanaugh. She pretended to consider, then turned around and gave the most disgusting partisan speech defending her vote for him. Whoever challenges her already has $3.75 million in the bank from a Crowdpac started for the eventual Democratic nominee amidst the Kavanaugh garbage.

QuietContraryMary · 07/11/2018 11:53

"Collins is going DOWN in 2020, if she runs"

I wouldn't be so sure. Joe Manchin just won in WV having endorsed Kavanaugh, despite having a -1 approval rating. Collins is at +15% post-Kavanaugh, so there's really no sign of her losing popularity. Kavanaugh also won't be an issue in 2020.

$3.75 million is not really a big deal in that Maine is a small state (1.3 million population) and the GOP won't have any difficulty funding a campaign there

Gumpendorf · 07/11/2018 12:17

These figures aren't good overall but 76% of white women voting for Kemp is just 🤯

White women:
76% Kemp
59% Cruz
51% DeSantis

Black women:
95% O'Rourke
97% Abrahms
82% Gillum

White women gonna white.

^The suburbs have abandoned Trump. Rural areas are redder. The independents are voting Democratic. Young people are, too, but not nearly in the numbers that could have overwhelmed these elections.
White women, particularly those without college educations, have not strayed far from the president. Democrats have not figured out how to win where the electorate is more than two-thirds white.^
