i had an msn conversation with someone who i consider a good friend yesterday. it was about veg and i told her we use frozen. i also said im not sure what a broad bean is. we never had them when i was a child and i dont buy them now.

anyway just clicked onto a site and there she is telling everyone i buy frozen and dont know what a broad bean is. someone else said that if i didnt know what a broad bean was then i cant be feeding my son properly!

this friend has met my son and knows hes healthy and well fed yet totally agreed with this person.
im fuming and shaking that she can take a private conversation and post it on the web and also she has willingly agreed with someone that my son isnt well fed.

oh dear doesn't sound like she's such a good freind after all. does she know that you can read what she's written or does she think she's anonymous as with mn?

TootyFrooty · 17/06/2007 11:39

Will watch the replies with interest, especially as so many posts on MN involve people being judgemental about other parents.

nuttygirl · 17/06/2007 11:40

That's shocking...and I never knew that unless I ate broad beans I'm not well fed

nuttygirl · 17/06/2007 11:41

I mean the friends behaviour is shocking btw...not yours!

bran · 17/06/2007 11:42

I would post a response on the site to the effect that frozen veg is nutritionally just as good, if not better, than fresh veg that has been sitting around for several days. And broad beans are not essential to a balanced diet (I like them personally, but I hardly ever use them because it's a pain peeling off the thick skin).

Don't flame anyone or get angry and insulting, but if it was me I would want to say that I felt hurt that a friend would say this on a public forum when it must be apparent to her that the child has a perfectly good diet.

kimi · 17/06/2007 11:43

Point out that frozen veg holds more vitamins for longer then fresh veg, also despite being fed them as a child our home is broad bean free and I have a very healthy family so its not a crime not to eat them.
She sounds a bit shallow to me tbh

holsnovell · 17/06/2007 11:43

What the hell is wrong with frozen. Thats bloody out of order

Wotz · 17/06/2007 11:45

Just don't let it upset you too much.
Thank god I don't use msn!

mumof4aceboys · 17/06/2007 11:45

Hi - frozen is actually better for you than fresh anyway as it freezes all the nutrients. Shes obviously got nothing better to talk about. Broad beans are horrible anyway. You sound like a nice person. Dont worry - she will fall off her big horse soon

goldenwings · 17/06/2007 11:46

i have replied that im upset and angry that she has done this. we both use the site so she knoew i would probably come across it.

what hurts the most is that she has met my boy. hes 8 months old has a great weight and loves his veg. she also knows we are struggling for money and cant afford to by fresh veg just for it to go off and be wasted. im sorry for posting here but my dp is at work and i feel like all my friends arent really my friend after all. i just dont understand why she would do this?

akaJamiesMum · 17/06/2007 11:49

Yep - another "frozen is better in many cases" response from me to. Veg that is frozen holds it's nutrients far longer than veg which has sat around for two weeks.

I happen to like broad beans but rarely buy them as I am the lone "broad bean" eater in the house.

colditz · 17/06/2007 11:49

broad beans are bloody foul. They were only popular because they were easy to grow - they were never very nice. Even my mother never made me eat them!

Wotz · 17/06/2007 11:51

To be honest who needs friends like that. you are better off knowing how 2faced she is and block her msn.

sazzybee · 17/06/2007 11:52

Why don't you post on the site explaining that broad beans are vile and that frozen veg are absolutely fine. Make her look like a stupid bigot (as that's how she's behaving).

Can you do it anonymously or post under another name?

sazzybee · 17/06/2007 11:53

Oh yeah - and dump her as a friend. You don't need friends who you have honest conversations with who then uses them to take the piss out of you behind your back

goldenwings · 17/06/2007 11:55

this is going to change me i think. she came to visit me when i got out of hospital after my ovarian cyst was diagnosed. we had a great night and i brought pizzas.

when shes having a rough time i sit talking to her on msn to make her feel better. im not a bitch i dont do f all to my friends to be horrible. im a phonecall away to anyone who needs me.

dp says im to nice well no more. im not having myself or how i raise my boy slagged off by anyone

Tsk - 'supportive'

kimi · 17/06/2007 12:00

yes go on link us and we will back up the frozen veg is best point.
I happen to have no less then 12 yes 12 types of veg in my frezzer

Wotz · 17/06/2007 12:05

blanching and frozen veg

here as pdf file

good info on freezinf techniques too.

goldenwings · 17/06/2007 12:06

lol thank you ladies. im so glad i found MN i feel better now. i wont post the link though as surprisingly im getting back up from a lot of the posters on there.

we all want to do the best for our children and we dont need slating about our choices especially from 'friends' dp is going to go nutty when he gets in. his boy is his life and he will not have people slating our parenting. also we were going to drive up north to visit her family at the weekend. somehow i dont think that will happen.

Trained dieticians have told me, when I was researching an article on this, the same thing about frozen and indeed tinned veg.

Can't believe so many people dislike broad beans. I love em. Now celery - that really is the work of the devil.

duchesse · 17/06/2007 12:17

Peas and beans and sweetcorn especially are better frozen than fresh, as the sugars in them start to turn to starch as soon as they leave the plant. If frozen within a couple of hours, they are actually much much nicer than "fresh" from the supermarket. I speak as one who grows her own veg.

That said, your issue is not peas and beans. I'd say that this woman is not a friend, and that furthermore she may not have enough in her life to worry about if she needs to report private conversations in a bitchy way. If she really worth keeping?
