Hermione - Harry Potter - How annoying!

Tahani · 17/10/2018 12:25

She is just annoying, much more so in the film than the books.

Just watching the Goblet of Fire, and she's 'ooo Victor is so physical... well he isn't loquacious, he likes to watch me study'

she just really grates on me...

Both Harry and Hermione have the misfortune to have been played by two of the worst actors in the business.

I agree 100% about EW. She is a terrible actress.

While DR is dire as Harry he has been watchable in other stuff. I think he was spectacularly miscast as Harry.

Ginny takes the wooden spoon though. My kettle has more acting skills.

Agreed. And also with whoever says the Weasley twins were awful.

It's a shame that the kiddy actors were, in the main, dreadful. It undermines what could have been a good franchise. Draco, Luna and Cedric are the only half decent ones.

Bibijayne · 17/10/2018 16:29

I love Hermione. But I was a bit like her as a kid. I love the fact she's seen as cool and a positive role model and someone who has good friends in the books and films. Makes a change!

bluetit101 · 17/10/2018 16:35

Yes!! I hate her!! (Emma Watson grates on me full stop)
My daughter is a huge HP and Emma Watson fan so watches the films a lot, but I just can't bear her! The bit in Goblet Of Fire when she sends Ron and Harry to bed!! I want to throw things at the tv Angry

ShartGoblin · 17/10/2018 16:36

Surely there were hundreds of talented children going for the part. When the cast is so strong in general, how did these two terrible actors end up in the crucial roles?

There was casting in my area when I was about the right age, I remember being dreadfully disappointed because only the private school was invited to audition. I so wanted to go for a part, I had very scruffy hair! Sad

Tahani · 17/10/2018 17:08

oh and Harry - its YOUR FAULT that Sirius died! If you had used the glass he sent you, you would have known he wasnt there, if you had tried another way to contact him, you would have known, if you had told one of the teachers at the school - anything! Your damned fault!!

Dolores Umbridge, i know shes a 'baddie' but shes not an on-the-side of Voldemort? is she?

The world isn't split into good people and death eaters...

She does, however, slide right into Voldemort's puppet government where she gleefully persecutes muggle-borns, which isn't a big leap from her previous work with anti-half-breed legislation. She's a vile abomination, who is presumably missing from the ranks of the Death Eaters purely because even The Dark Lord has to have some standards...

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/10/2018 17:14

ow did these two terrible actors end up in the crucial roles

Arent DR parents both agents?

So they would deffo be in the know for audition opportunities

Dd hasn't forgiven me for not letting her audition...THE FACT THAT SHE IS ONLY 16 AND IS MUCH MUCH TOO YOUNG CONTIUES TO ESCAPE HER

plus she is still waiting for her invitation to Hogwarts, her theory is that she will join the 6th form.....i think she may be a bit confused Grin

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 17/10/2018 17:18

And Harry knows it's his fault Sirius died. That's why he's so cut up about it. Though Dumbledore's behaviour in OoP is pretty crap - the poor kid is clearly fucked up after Cedric-gate, so ignoring him and leaving him to be tortured by Umbridge is pretty poor form before you consider the fact that he thought it would make sense to leave the occlumency lessons to Snape (who is a nasty little bully, and shouldn't be allowed near any of those children).

Abra1de · 17/10/2018 17:24

Don’t mention Umbridge.

People on MN will be taking it again.

Umbrage, umbrage.

moonkin · 17/10/2018 17:28

oh one question, off topic - Dolores Umbridge, i know shes a 'baddie' but shes not an on-the-side of Voldemort? is she?

Rowling wrote a chapter about this on Power, Politics and Pesky Poltergeists if you're interested. Your DS is right though. When Thicknesse took over, the more senior of the Death Eaters decided that her belief system aligned more with theirs than Dumbledore's, and gave her the authority to oversee the fate of muggle-borns in what was essentially a kangaroo court. That's when her allegiance to Voldy became more apparent, imo.

TheLastNigel · 17/10/2018 18:55

Hermione I don't mind. Emma Watson as an actress-really just not good.
I prefer her as an activist-I find her more convincing in that guise...but I've never seen her acting to a particularly high standard.

AngeloMysterioso · 17/10/2018 19:08

Ginny was woefully miscast, but I think that was because at the time book Ginny was still quiet and timid, she hadn’t become kick-ass Ginny yet.

Dan Radcliffe, god love him, just isn’t heroic enough for Harry. He’s got less than fuck all charisma.

AuntGertrude · 17/10/2018 19:40

Hermione prompts Umbridge (who is an abhorrent individual, yes) into an area of the Forbidden Forest when she knows that the centaurs there might well kill her. There are other decisions she makes where I consider Hermione not the best role model. Umbridge might be a torturing fascist but in a book for children, Hermione actually is prepared to get Umbridge killed.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 17/10/2018 19:58

Umbridge didn't have to start insulting the "half-breeds of near-human intelligence" though, did she? She was the architect of her own (sadly incomplete) demise that night. It's not like Hermione had a lot of options, what with Potter's "oh no, Sirius is about to die" melodrama generating a degree of urgency in their escape and all that.

thisneverendingsummer · 17/10/2018 20:12

Don't understand the hate for Emma Watson on here to be honest. She was as good as anyone else would have been as Hermione in Harry Potter.

Lots of vitriol for Emma. Why? Confused

Beautiful, successful, slim, talented, popular, very rich, lots of men fancy her..........

Yeah I can see why there is so much hate for her on here! 🤣😂

BitchQueen90 · 17/10/2018 20:15

@thisneverendingsummer I don't hate her, I just don't think she's a good actress. People are allowed to have their opinions. Confused

LavendarGreen · 17/10/2018 20:25

I also get super pissed off (like Prof Moody,) when people witter on about how HP is supposedly for children. I know more ADULTS who are HP fans than I do children. And more adults who have read all 7 books.

I LOVE HP, and the Hunger Games, and The 100, and the neflix programmes '13 Reasons Why' and Riverdale. And I enjoy reading young adult fiction.

I am a middle aged woman who likes things aimed at 'kids' and 17 to 25 year olds. So what? Confused

I also enjoy crime drama, sci-fi, and horror books and films (and tv programmes.) And also nature programmes (documentaries and suchlike.) And I am fascinated with programmes about Space, Physics, general science, and wild weather and so on.

I have had people at work mock me and take the piss out of me for several of my hobbies and interests, yet I never say anything to them about their hobbies (that I have no interest in.)

So rude to judge and mock because people like things YOU don't like or YOU deem 'childish.'

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 17/10/2018 20:47

I don't hate EW. That would be weird. I show the footage of her famous speech in my persuasive speaking class.i think she's stunningly beautiful. I just think she's a rubbish actress.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 17/10/2018 20:47

Personally I'm a big fan of the CS Lewis approach...

"When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

I embrace all sorts of childish (and unchildish) things. Indeed, as a young teenager, I considered the Harry Potter books too childish for me. Then I read them, and decided not to be so silly in future Wink

LavendarGreen · 17/10/2018 20:52

@Diseasesofthesheep

Love that quote by C S Lewis. Smile

DuckofDoom · 17/10/2018 20:53

thisneverendingsummer

I think she’s fantastic. Passionate, a wonderful public speaker, committed to important causes, beautiful and intelligent. But she was not a good actress as a kid.

Tahani · 17/10/2018 20:59

oh dear - yet another person falling back on the mumsnet classic that no one can possibly dislike someone and it must be jealousy
ODFOD

no one has mentioned her appearance at all (that i have noticed)
We are discussing how annoying the film character of Hermione is, and some people has mentioned that shes not the best actress.

OP posts:
Tahani · 17/10/2018 21:00

although moving on - if Hermione is meant to be an annoying know it all, pretty sure she nailed it, as thats what FILM Hermione is?

Shes more annoying than book Hermione

Don't understand the hate for Emma Watson on here to be honest.

I don't hate her. I just think she's a terrible actress. For what it's worth I really like some of the modelling she's done.

She was as good as anyone else would have been as Hermione in Harry Potter.

She really, really wasn't. Are people just very bad at judging acting ability or something? To contrast, the Hermione in the stage version is amazing.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/10/2018 21:24

Beautiful, successful, slim, talented, popular, very rich, lots of men fancy her..........

Yes, yes, yes, no, yes, yes, yes

She is not a good actress, dont hate her...just dont rate her

'Oooh youre all jealous' how old are we?
