Hermione - Harry Potter - How annoying!

Tahani · 17/10/2018 12:25

She is just annoying, much more so in the film than the books.

Just watching the Goblet of Fire, and she's 'ooo Victor is so physical... well he isn't loquacious, he likes to watch me study'

she just really grates on me...

I like book Hermione and book Ginny but I don't like the movie versions. Emma Watson's overacting makes me cringe and Bonnie Wright just isn't fiery enough.

Movie Luna is awesome though!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/10/2018 15:13

The children did get better with age (except for Ginny)

But Rupert Grint was the best from the start and he maintained his lead

I just don't think Emma Watson can act...but that's obviously a personal opinion Grin as Hollywood begs to differ

She even managed to bollox up Ballet shoes and i loved that book

Hidingtonothing · 17/10/2018 15:13

Yep, they got Luna spot on, love her.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 17/10/2018 15:16

Bloobs- yes, I think that has to do with the fact that the whole series is so chock full of loopholes, over the years she's had a heck of a lot of "well, I meant..." to do!

Love HP, love the books, don't mind the films (except the GoF which is shit) but great literature it ain't. (Yes, I am wel-jel of JK Grin)

kermakalja · 17/10/2018 15:16

The series was aimed at people my age, in fact, anyone who is now 25-35 was the target audience for the Harry Potter series. I'm almost 30 now (so definitely an adult hmm ) and still love them.

This. Besides, the books grew alongside us - there were some pretty dark themes from Order of the Phoenix onwards imo.

Glumglowworm · 17/10/2018 15:18

Hermiones hair I’m the first movie was proper hermione hair! Bushy and uncontrolled because she had far more important things to do than worry about her hair. Then from the second movie onwards it was just styled into waves and it disappointed me.

I wasn’t a fan of book Ginny and movie Ginny is just so bloody dull! I never shipped Harry and Ginny but in the later books she at least has a personality. In the movies there’s absolutely no reason for Harry to fall for her.

RedPandaMama · 17/10/2018 15:23

I adore Harry Potter and think Hermione is brilliant. As previous posters have said, Harry is far more annoying with all his martyr 'im not scared of anything, kill me Voldy' bullshit.

Hermione is great - she makes reading and cleverness cool and the two boys would never make it through without her. Shows girls can be brilliant and tough and she's a hero.

redexpat · 17/10/2018 15:25

Ive seen DR in rosencrantz and guildernstein are dead and it was the first time I believed him as a character rather than seeing DR. He was quite good in russian drs notebook too.

Summerbabygirl · 17/10/2018 15:26

Hermione is the best one. The other two did fuck all, they wouldn’t have lasted past the philosophers stone if it wasn’t for her.

MadeleineMaxwell · 17/10/2018 15:27

That explanation SORT OF makes some sense, although it also sort of removes any agency from Harry.

Grin I think it's just a manifestation of his personality, myself. But I kind of shy away from reading too much into literature and like to enjoy the stories. I mean, if you really want to drill down into it, Harry is Christ, Dumbledore is God and Voldy is Satan, so the whole series is just a modern New Testament for kids, but doesn't that just drain all the fun out of it?

DuckofDoom · 17/10/2018 15:34

Both Harry and Hermione have the misfortune to have been played by two of the worst actors in the business

This! Every time I watch the films, I’m amazed at how they ended up being cast. Surely there were hundreds of talented children going for the part. When the cast is so strong in general, how did these two terrible actors end up in the crucial roles?

thisneverendingsummer · 17/10/2018 15:35

Yeah, like a few other posters, I am also seeing hatred and loathing towards her, because she is a female, who is 'cocky,' 'full of herself,' and 'bossy.' If she were male, she would be classed as smart, assertive, and confident.

God forbid a female has an opinion, and can outsmart a male. 🙄

Tahani · 17/10/2018 15:40

checked with oldest DS and he said

Delores wasn't a volde-girl-fan until Volde came out, and then joined him because she just wanted to be in charge
And what do you expect when her parents named her Delores Umbridge?

then we moved on to nice Deloreseses and I could only think of the lead singer from the Cranberries who always seemed nice, and the nasty Stephen King Delores

no - not at all, if Ron was written acted in the style of her Char, we would be talking about him - its not a bloody sex issue, cant you see past the fact its a female character and stop imagining things that simply arent there

@Tahini

Nahhhhh you're convincing no-one. Wink

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 17/10/2018 15:51

I was a bit of a Hermione at school. I liked the character because she wasn't perfect. EW... painful line delivery and hasn't wowed me post HP either.

Being a similar age to her too, she's one of those women who always gets shoved down your throat for being so wonderful ... which obviously makes us mere mortals feel great about ourselves.

Also agree that Ginny was the worst actress. I also didn't like the character much, she seemed to go from being a drip to rather too hard. I know we're meant to think she's ballsy but she just came across as the sporty version of Hermione. I also never shipped her & Harry. Always thought he should end up with Luna.

I never found Harry that bad either. Even when he was being a twattier than average teen on occasion, overall he was ok - and surprisingly nice a lot of the time, considering! Especially as he was often annoyed at how people treated him.

serbska · 17/10/2018 15:52

You always get one on these threads that trot out the "for children" line.

I'm nearly 34 and sitting in my Harry potter jammies!

Yeah but you were literally the target audience. You were 12/13 when the first book came out :-)

Helendee · 17/10/2018 15:54

DH and I are both 54 and MASSIVE HP fans, book and films. God knows what that makes us! 🤪

GrandTheftWalrus · 17/10/2018 15:55

I didn't read any of them though till I was about 19/20.

And when I did I started with goblet of fire.

Wasn't interested in them before that.

serbska · 17/10/2018 16:00

I’m rereading the books at the moment and they’ve been slightly spoilt for me by the films.

I keep seeing annoying film Harry and hermione and gjnny where as in the books they are great.

Agree that film luna is amazing.

Tahani · 17/10/2018 16:04

is this meant to be tongue in cheek, or funny, because I dont get it?

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 17/10/2018 16:07

God yes- Book Hermione was fantastic, smart but not annoying at all. Tried to start a Trade Union for house elves. Marvellous.

Film Hermione was terrible, purely down to the overacting of Emma Watson. She just says her lines very earnestly and shouts random words, with her eyebrows waggling all over the shop.

I’m still very bitter than she was given (and ruined) the role of Belle in Beauty and the Beast as well Angry

OrangeFluff · 17/10/2018 16:11

DR in 'Swiss Army Man' is pretty fun to watch Grin

Ginny definitely had the worst book to film adaption. Absolutely no chemistry between her and Harry at all. Luna was fantastic, as was Draco.

Namelessinseattle · 17/10/2018 16:16

I think poor Emma wasn’t given much to work with in the movies either. She was a pain in the ass in the movies. And agree Ginny is also shockingly written in the movies. Where’s her string of boyfriends!?!?’ Evanna Lynch however- she made Luna for me, way preferred her to the book version, JK has said her character is the only one influenced by the movies.

HBC was basically unreal, and her portrayal of Emma Watson doing Hermione doing bellatrix was just phenomenal.

Interesting (maybe side note) the three main actors were asked to do an essay on their character for the director of the POA and DR produced a dogs dinner of a yoke at last minute, Emma gave a thesis and RG handed nothing in, was completely unapologetic and said it’s what Ron oils have done.

ProfessorMoody · 17/10/2018 16:23

I wonder why people always come onto Harry Potter threads and bleat about how the books are for children?

Can adults not enjoy things that are for children? I was 16 when the first Harry Potter book came out. I'm now nearly 40 and I still love everything about it. It's been a massive part of my life for various reasons.

I've seen the same ridiculous people exclaiming that things like ice-cream, certain songs, hobbies and films are for children too. It's just pathetic really. I can and will enjoy anything I want to. Including Harry Potter.

By ridiculing people for their pleasures, you just make yourself look bitter, sad and frankly unintelligent.

Back to the OP. Hermione is a fantastic character. A strong female role model. She's supposed to be an insufferable know it all. That's who she is. Emma Watson played her exactly as she was supposed to.
