Some scholarly research on this 'type' of lying.

THREAD: You may be wondering why only people on the left are worked up about Kavanaugh’s obvious lies. I mean, do people on the right really believe his (changing) story about what “Renate alumnus” meant?

Of course they don’t. They’re not idiots.

So then why isn’t Kavanaugh hurt by this?
Because, as we (@ohahl @minjaekim22) show in our research, obvious (“common knowledge”) lies can be effective tools for proclaiming deeper truths to those who are primed to hear them.

Fascinating, NorthWest.

Here's the research the thread cites:

The Authentic Appeal of the Lying Demagogue: Proclaiming the Deeper Truth about Political Illegitimacy
Oliver Hahl, Minjae Kim, Ezra W. Zuckerman Sivan, First Published January 10, 2018

They were looking at why the telling of obvious lies was described as "authentic" during the 2016 election. They also carried out some experiments using the scenario of a college election.

I've been puzzled for some time over the use of the word "authentic".

Not least after hearing it from the woman who ghostwrote Trump's blog or whatever, during the election campaign. She said how enjoyable it was to write words falsely purporting from him, because it was so authentic.Hmm

I'm coming to the conclusion people use "authentic" to mean "feels like it's for People Like Us". For their particular PLU.

ohmymimi · 30/09/2018 16:12

Thank you,North and *Perking, very much. That study is an interesting contributory explanation of a complex and disturbing phenomenon.

a. Not sure GOP had that degree of foresight.
b. Quite possible their great fear is what might come out, because they know/suspect that is a there, there.
c. He is irreparably damaged, confirmed or not, because of what he did as an adult before a nationally televised audience.
I think we know by now this is definitely not in all eyes. (She was 'squirrelly', he a 'courageous' hero - 'The Federalist ')

@jedshug
SNL is an example of why the GOP desperately feared delay.
Beyond Kavanaugh’s growing legal problems, he is now a national joke.
He is irreparably damaged, confirmed or not, because of what he did as an adult before a nationally televised audience.

What Kind of Judge is Brett Kavanaugh?

A Quantitative Analysis

This article reports the results of a series of data analyses of how recent Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh compares to other potential Supreme Court nominees and current Supreme Court Justices in his judging style. The analyses reveal a number of ways in which Judge Kavanaugh differs systematically from his colleagues.

'HOW WE KNOW KAVANAUGH IS LYING
This man should not serve another day as any kind of judge.'
In this case, when we examine the testimony of Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford honestly, impartially, and carefully, it is impossible to escape the following conclusions:
Brett Kavanaugh is lying.
There is no good reason to believe that Christine Blasey Ford is lying. This does not mean that she is definitely telling the truth, but that there is nothing in what Kavanaugh said that in any way discredits her account.
I want to show you, clearly and definitively, how Brett Kavanaugh has lied to you and lied to the Senate. I cannot prove that he committed sexual assault when he was 17, and I hesitate to draw conclusions about what happened for a few minutes in a house in Maryland in the summer of 1982. But I can prove quite easily that Kavanaugh’s teary-eyed “good, innocent man indignant at being wrongfully accused” schtick was a facade. What may have looked like a strong defense was in fact a very, very weak and implausible one.'

Thank you so much for finding that Cardoza piece, North, very revealing. And it underlines that Kav.is, and always has been, a partisan political operator.

Thanks NorthWest. The lying demagogue theory is fascinating and depressing.

But it does explain a lot and about Brexit too
