Early today I heard a much more pessimistic assessment of the Dem's likely success in the mids, described as a 'blue bubble' rather than a wave. I was half asleep and can't recall who was doing the assessing.

I've always assumed that the GOP would hold the Senate. Sorry, all.

Dersh is right, that would be foolish. But, what about his numerous perjuries before Senate ctees? Those were not perpetrated 30 odd years ago.

RBG and Kagan dissented. Kav. did not vote.
'Supreme Court Makes It Harder for Tribal North Dakotans to Vote.
The order could hurt the reelection chances of Heidi Heitkamp, the most vulnerable Democratic Senator.'
In her dissent, Ginsburg argued that the Supreme Court’s order was at odds with one of the top court’s most frequently invoked doctrines on election law: not to change the rules right before an election. By allowing a different set of ID rules in the general election from in the primary, Ginsburg warned, the court was risking widespread confusion and disenfranchisement.
“The risk of voter confusion appears severe here because the injunction against requiring residential-address identification was in force during the primary election and because the Secretary of State’s website announced for months the ID requirements as they existed under that injunction,” Ginsburg wrote. “Reasonable voters may well assume that the IDs allowing them to vote in the primary election would remain valid in the general election. If the Eighth Circuit’s stay is not vacated, the risk of disfranchisement is large.”
Ginsburg noted that according to the factual record of the case, about 20 percent of voters likely to try to cast a ballot in the midterms will lack the required identification. Another “approximately18,000 North Dakota residents also lack supplemental documentation sufficient to permit them to vote without a qualifying ID,” she noted.

Wut! It is less than a month to an election and a POTUS gets to write an OpEd, and (of course) it is stuffed with is challenged liesHmm
Jim Acosta
@Acosta
This column may break the record for the number of falsehoods from a President ever published in a newspaper op-Ed. Just this tweet alone is false - “outlaw private health care plans” and “letting anyone cross our border” Huh? Fact check: false and false. Come on USA Today.
@USATODAY
.@usatodayopinion: Democrats want to outlaw private health care plans, taking away freedom to choose plans while letting anyone cross our border. We must win this. How Trump's rally lies are treated by almost all media: just ignored. Blumenthal didn't say many of the things Trump claimed he said; Feinstein didn't say the things Trump claimed she said; Trump still got the attacks into the New York Times unquestioned. (link: www.nytimes.com/2018/10/06/us/politics/trump-kavanaugh.html?smid=tw-nytimes&smtyp=cur) nytimes.com/2018/10/06/us/…

In other words: not only do mainstream stories on Trump's speeches habitually decline to point out the fact that Trump made somewhere between 15 and 30 false claims, they often include the false attacks or boasts without even a mild correction.

Precisely: Trump tells the same lies over and over, and almost all have been fact checked by WaPo, me, AP, PolitiFact, (link: Factcheck.org) Factcheck.org. You can go into a speech with a list of corrections in a second Word doc, ready to be pasted into the story

@GlennKesslerWP
There was even a detailed fact check of "Da Nang Dick" in the Washington Post just two days earlier, so no excuse: (link: www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/10/05/brett-kavanaughs-testimony-what-was-misleading-what-was-not/?utm_term=.6ff75d301222) washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/… (link: twitter.com/ddale8/status/1048929868010930176) twitter.com/ddale8/status/…

I should note that the NYT, specifically @YLindaQiu, is doing some excellent, regular fact-checking of Trump: (link: www.nytimes.com/spotlight/fact-checks) nytimes.com/spotlight/fact…. I just don't think it should be left to fact-checkers to clean up later - should be a hallmark of the main coverage.

They may 'dislike it' but I suspect that they like to know it's there and that the government is following it. Smile

I know this is late, but the Fresno Bee endorsing a Democrat is, well, EPIC. The Central Valley is notoriously red.

I've just been watching Kamala Harris collar Christopher Wray (on the Kavanaugh 'investigation') followed by Nielsen (on detained children).

Wray looked a little squirmy and Nielsen rattled.

I'm trying to remember the advice from a media analyst a few months ago about how to report when Trump – or anyone else – tells barefaced lies.

Sometimes reporters feel they have to report on an incident, because it's the POTUS speaking.

So rather than leading with the content of the lie, which just amplifies it, IIRC the advice was:

  1. lead with the actual fact ("It rained during the inauguration.")

  2. follow with a comment on POTUS's choice to lie about the fact ("How weird, POTUS has been saying it didn't rain,")

  3. repeat the actual fact ("but in reality, it rained during the inauguration").
