AIBU in thinking a drunken 18 year old boy should not be called to account for behaviour 35 years later?

I'm conflicted. Brett Kavanaugh, nominated by Trump as a Supreme Court judge, has been accused of locking Dr Christine Blasey Ford in a bedroom and sexually assaulting her. This happened in the early 1980s when they were teens at a party and he was very drunk, she hadnt been drinking. She says she is 100 percent certain he did this. He says wasn't me guv.
Her televised evidence was upsetting and convincing. I believe what she says and feel she should have whatever she needs to help her. BUT. Drunken 18 year old boy/man. All these years later? Is that fair? To wreck his career now? Personally, I loathe Trump and all his works, so politically I'm glad to see a fail. But this is not sitting well with me. I feel I should feel better about this. Convince me please.

Yes, exactly.

I honestly think they could've been presented with video footage of him raping someone, and he'd still have been confirmed.

It's sad that we live in a world where we must "convince" people that sexual assault is not okay.

Someone so high in the law should have personal integrity shouldn’t they? I’d question whether he is the right person for the job.

Also it would be quite easy to disprove a malicious allegation by some random. Conversely, It is more difficult to prove if the victim knew the defendant. This woman did know him, did attend parties with him and his group but it’s her word against his. He’s an obnoxious prat who now has a lifelong post sitting in judgement on others.

NarcolepticOuchMouse · 08/10/2018 03:08

What a bloody ridiculous thing to say. Of course he should held accountable, this kind of nonsense isn't helpful in the slightest in clamping down on repulsive behaviour such as his.

He should be tried for attempted rape but he won’t be. Why would this woman have come forward there is no gain for her. I read last week that he would be appointed and that nothing would derail his appointment. Sickening.

Well with luck a lot of other women will come forward and there'll just be too many to ignore. Or maybe Melanie will have word with the Pres.

He should absolutely be called for account.
If 90 odd old year old Nazis can be searched for and prosecuted then he can.

Erm - he's got the job now guys.

The only way to get him out is to impeach him, which could happen if it was proven that he lied to Congress, and is pretty unlikely.

As for Melania - she chose to marry an admitted sexual abuser. I very much doubt she's been warning Trump off Kavanaugh.

And the reasons they want him there as a Conservative judge are also horrifying
