to be seriously considering giving up on GBBO?

FancyPantSusan · 26/09/2018 17:18

I've always been a devoted GBBO fan.

However, I'm really struggling to cope with the C4 version.

I absolutely hate the adverts and I don't think the programme is gripping enough to cope with adverts. I find myself chatting with DH during the adverts then carrying on our conversation over the top of GBBO when it comes back on. When it was on BBC with no adverts, me and DH never uttered a word Grin

I find Noel Fielding very tiresome. He's just not particularly funny and his childish "I have no idea what baking is, I'm just going to stand near you and make jokes" interactions with the contestants I'm finding quite hard to put up with. Having said that, I always found Sue Perkins to be a bit of a knob so I guess I can't be too harsh on Noel.

I'm also finding this year's crop of contestants very challenging. It seems to be edging towards a typical C4 "personality parade" and I can't help but feel that some people are putting on a bit of a show for the cameras. We have:
Kim Joy's "Oh I'm so crazy and whacky but also a little bit adorable";
Ruby's "I'm completely gorgeous look at my pout. Oh a little swear word slipped out accidentally on purpose. Aren't I naughty and foul mouthed and hilarious";
Jon's "Look at my loud Hawaiian shirt, I'm clearly crazy and a really good laugh. Oh and I love my daughters, aren't I just swell?";
Karen's "I'm also hilarious. I'm an older woman very painfully and performatively not giving a shit. Wasn't it hilarious when I sat shoveling crisps into my gob when everyone else was still cooking that one week? See, told you, hilarious";
Briony's "Oh look, I'm so lovely and mumsy"
Rahul's "I'm still learning lots about the UK and, conveniently, fitting into the cultural stereotype of the acceptable immigrant. I'm very quiet and apologetic and that makes me adorable"

I really need to give up on this programme I think. Who's with me?!

Love Noel and I watch it on recored 10 mins in to avoid the breaks

Rahul is pure goodness

Elllicam · 26/09/2018 17:20

I feel the same it isn’t holding my attention at all this time. I miss Mary Berry.

AuntBeastie · 26/09/2018 17:20

YABU for hating on Rahul who is a sweet baby angel and the first thing that’s made me feel cheerful since brexit

Hillarious · 26/09/2018 17:20

On your own, I'm afraid.

Poodles1980 · 26/09/2018 17:21

I’m with you op. I am finding myself very bored this year, it really hasn’t Caught my attention at all and I’ve been reading the news on my phone and chatting through it as well.

icannotthinkofauser · 26/09/2018 17:21

@AuntBeastie agreed.

Magicstar1 · 26/09/2018 17:25

I agree with you, except I don't mind Noel, but detest Sandy.
I record it and start 20 minutes in so I can forward through the ads, but I find I'm so easily distracted this year.
In fact, they were talking about bread week in last week's episode and I said to DH that we must have missed it. I check the Sky planner and scanned through it...turns out we had already watched it and totally forgotten!

Crackedvase · 26/09/2018 17:25

I'm loving it. Love Prue, and think Noel and Sandy are funny and warm. I think this years bakers are really endearing too

Lindy2 · 26/09/2018 17:27

I pretty much only watch tv I've recorded on the sky box. That way I just zip past all the adverts. It would drive me mad not to be able to do that.
I'm still enjoying GBBO. The contestants are always a bit of a steriotypical line up though aren't they? Even when it was BBC.

hodgeheg92 · 26/09/2018 17:27

I've watched the first 2 and then forgotten to download the next. It's just not as engaging as it used to be Sad

Sweetpea55 · 26/09/2018 17:30

I wonder if Rahul will win,,hes a good baker but all this apologetic shyness reminds me of Nadia who won last year,,she cried most of the time.

Padparadscha · 26/09/2018 17:30

I’m one of those (rare) people who refused to watch it once it moved to C4. Between the adverts (we’ve only just got a Virgin Media box back, so on All4 we couldn’t skip) and the shitty way they treated Mel and Sue/the BBC, I decided not to watch it. I was thinking of relenting with this series, however Hollywood has become as big a twazzock as Morgan/Clarkson/Jeremy Kyle/Insert Man in Constant Mid-life Crisis Here that I really cant bear to look at his smug stupid face for even a moment.

I really wish there was a decent replacement somewhere. That singing show on the BBC a good few weeks back was quite good in the ‘gentle but fun’ viewing, despite Geri Spice Girl being in it

Cheeeeislifenow · 26/09/2018 17:31

Sophie won last year.... And I won't hear a word said about Noel.. I love him

ProfessorMoody · 26/09/2018 17:31

Don't watch it then?

I'm still finding it as good as before, if not better. Completely disagree about Noel, he's fantastic. As is Kim Joy. You don't like that people are different /quirky? That's real life.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 26/09/2018 17:33

Paul Hollywood is reason enough TBH.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 26/09/2018 17:33

To give up!

Theweasleytwins · 26/09/2018 17:34

Don't like the terrible Mary berry replacement. Apparently she has done many books but she isn't a sweet lovely grandmother type like Mary- she seems like a disapproving mil

Noel is okay- don't like the other presenter

Does seem to be based on personality

Kim-joys makeup really irritates me (pregnant and hormonal)

I don't like the French ladies earrings- they look painful (she is beautiful though)

Don't like Raol with his 'humble' attitude

Actually don't like anyone this year🤔normally like someone

londonmummy1966 · 26/09/2018 17:35

I can cope with GBBO its the Extra Slice that gets me - Jo Brand is great but that unfunny, full of himself sub-Graham Norton type they've saddled her with is really annoying and they seem to have stopped having a balanced panel of a cook/chef, a celebrity fan and a comedian which is a pity as it would be nice to think that someone actually knew what they were talking about. I can only assume C4 think that a woman is not able to sustain comedy by herself for 40 minutes....

RebootYourEngine · 26/09/2018 17:35

I am not feeling a huge fondness for it this year. I am struggling to warm to a lot of the bakers.

Rahul is so annoying. I think he is putting on an act. He bakes to make friends?!
Also he is really good at baking but pretends that he isn't. Just drop the act.

I like Jon and brionny and that's about it. Noel and Sandy could be funnier though, they need to have more banter.

SistersOfPercy · 26/09/2018 17:35

If Rahul doesn't win the DC's and I vowed to boycott channel 4 for life.
I also rather love Kim Joy

I'm probably not the target audience for this thread. Blush

Clionba · 26/09/2018 17:37

Rahul is a sweetie and I love KimJoy! The space turtle thingy was inspired! I also prefer Noel and Sandi because I like their whimsy and find it non intrusive. All very subjective, if it's not for you, then fine.

IGiorni · 26/09/2018 17:37

I completely get you OP. There’s usually a few that I really like and an odd one that I dislike but this year I’m a bit ‘meh’ about all of them. Don’t really care who wins or who goes home. Your descriptions are spot on as well, especially Kim-Joy. It’s very ‘look at me, look how quirky I am’. I find a few of them very fake.

LARLARLAND · 26/09/2018 17:38

I like Rahul.

RebootYourEngine · 26/09/2018 17:38

London I agree with you about Extra Slice. It used to be the best part of GBBO but that 'comedian' has spoilt it.

GerdaLovesLili · 26/09/2018 17:38

I love Noel and Sandi. I thought I loved SP more, but now I"m conflicted.

I wanted to hate Kim-Joy but she's such a good baker...
