to be seriously considering giving up on GBBO?

FancyPantSusan · 26/09/2018 17:18

I've always been a devoted GBBO fan.

However, I'm really struggling to cope with the C4 version.

I absolutely hate the adverts and I don't think the programme is gripping enough to cope with adverts. I find myself chatting with DH during the adverts then carrying on our conversation over the top of GBBO when it comes back on. When it was on BBC with no adverts, me and DH never uttered a word Grin

I find Noel Fielding very tiresome. He's just not particularly funny and his childish "I have no idea what baking is, I'm just going to stand near you and make jokes" interactions with the contestants I'm finding quite hard to put up with. Having said that, I always found Sue Perkins to be a bit of a knob so I guess I can't be too harsh on Noel.

I'm also finding this year's crop of contestants very challenging. It seems to be edging towards a typical C4 "personality parade" and I can't help but feel that some people are putting on a bit of a show for the cameras. We have:
Kim Joy's "Oh I'm so crazy and whacky but also a little bit adorable";
Ruby's "I'm completely gorgeous look at my pout. Oh a little swear word slipped out accidentally on purpose. Aren't I naughty and foul mouthed and hilarious";
Jon's "Look at my loud Hawaiian shirt, I'm clearly crazy and a really good laugh. Oh and I love my daughters, aren't I just swell?";
Karen's "I'm also hilarious. I'm an older woman very painfully and performatively not giving a shit. Wasn't it hilarious when I sat shoveling crisps into my gob when everyone else was still cooking that one week? See, told you, hilarious";
Briony's "Oh look, I'm so lovely and mumsy"
Rahul's "I'm still learning lots about the UK and, conveniently, fitting into the cultural stereotype of the acceptable immigrant. I'm very quiet and apologetic and that makes me adorable"

I really need to give up on this programme I think. Who's with me?!

OP posts:
LARLARLAND · 26/09/2018 17:38

I didn’t like the woman from Yorkshire.

Holidayfromreal · 26/09/2018 17:39

I also record it and watch it 10 mins later so don't get adverts.

Rahul pisses me off. I'm sorry but you can't be that good at something and believe you are completely shit. Not buying it.

Don't mind any of the others. Hope John wins but that's probably the Welsh in me

GerdaLovesLili · 26/09/2018 17:39

Oh yes! The space turtles!

Fatasfook · 26/09/2018 17:39

I love it! And your character assassination on each of the contestants was a bit mean and brutal. I think Noel and Sandi are way better than sue and Mel.

Astella22 · 26/09/2018 17:41

I agree with you OP, I’m a huge fan but find myself talkin over it or looking up something on my phone so it’s not holding my attention. I’m also very bored by the saga of the overheated tent fgs just get some aircon or hold it in a more suitable location. It’s like to win GBBO now you have to prove you can pipe a cream cake in 40 degree heat. Some of the challenges are just getting ridiculous aswell, a biscuit chandelier Hmm I miss seeing people just back nice home made recipes... it’s all starting to go a bit ‘professional’

Feefeetrixabelle · 26/09/2018 17:41

When I’m sad I watch clips of val to cheer me up. She’s so pure. And now I’ll be adding Rahul to the list because there isn’t a bad thing about him. He’s has zero self confidence it must kill him to get up in front of the judges when he clearly thinks he’s crap. And yet up he gets. He’s adorable.

ShannonRockallMalin · 26/09/2018 17:42

I was unsure when it first moved to C4 but have been completely won over. I love Noel and Sandi and Prue has grown on me. I think it’s got anew lease of life and will probably keep on going for longer now.

Agree that Rahul is adorable! Just want scoop him up for a hug when he gets all worried!

Cryingwithlaughter · 26/09/2018 17:42

Agreed OP, I tried with the first few episodes, but I just cannot get into it. I lose focus around the first ad break (even when it’s recorded and I skip the ads, and I watch other channel 4, 5, itv etc with adverts fine)

It’s just something has changed about it. Or it’s run it’s course. Either way I didn’t bother this week, and YANBU

ajandjjmum · 26/09/2018 17:43

I didn't want to like it when it moved, but I did.

But this year I haven't warmed to any of the contestants - and yes, as a PP says, Paul Hollywood has morphed into Jeremy Clarkson Mk. 11.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 26/09/2018 17:44

I'm in Forrin Parts and if you think you have problems .... they take out the Technical Challenge here so they can get more ads in. We only get two rounds Shock

Proper fucks me off.

Love Sandi though. Not got the current season - we only just finished the first channel 4 season.

Satsumaeater · 26/09/2018 17:46

I like it but I agree with your description of all the contestant stereotypes.

Bumbumtaloo · 26/09/2018 17:50

I didn’t think I’d like it on channel 4 but watched it because Noel is my weird celebrity crush. I found I actually prefer it to the old version. We also record and fast forward the breaks, it actually fits in well with Master Chef Australia (which is much better than the UK version).

bluesky45 · 26/09/2018 17:53

Rahul just seems so fake to me. He's clearly good at baking, has won star Baker at least twice and still he's like 'I don't know if this is any good, I'm so nervous for my feedback, it looks incredible but what if they say it looks messy?' Ugh. You can bake, just own it!

ApolloandDaphne · 26/09/2018 17:55

I am loving it. The people I wasn't so keen on have gone now so it is all good from here in for me. I like Sandi and Noel too.

MemoryOfSleep · 26/09/2018 17:56

I really enjoy it. Poor Terry though.

Buster72 · 26/09/2018 17:56

Don't like ruby annoying person.
How did Terry last this long couldn't bake at all
Rahul is wonderful
Mamon is the most gorgeous thing since sliced bread.

Amummyatlast · 26/09/2018 17:56

I think there is very little difference between the channel 4 version and the BBC version. And since I record 99% of what I watch nowadays, the adverts are no bother.

Oysterbabe · 26/09/2018 18:02

I love it.

Wigeon · 26/09/2018 18:02

I boycotted it last year because of the whole move to Channel 4/ loss of Mel and Sue, then relented this year. OP, you have basically summed up what I’ve been feeling.

How can anyone enjoy Noel’s presenting style? He’s not in the least bit interested. He’s clearly just there for the pay cheque. Not at all funny. Wearing a quirky shirt doesn’t make up for unfunny.

I am also finding it really tedious that they are making a big joke of how Prue loves her booze every time someone bakes with alcohol, just like they did with Mary Berry. It’s probably not true for either and it’s just not funny.

And how they say “ready steady BAKE” exactly the way Mel and Sue did, as if they can’t think of anything else to do.

Faffandahalf · 26/09/2018 18:03

I’m enjoying but Rahul pisses me off (I’m from a background of immigrants to this country). This whole almost subservient bowing and scraping soft spoken immigrant thing grates me.
I know that may just be his personality but it’s bloody annoying. How can anyone who think they are that shit apply to be on a national tv show. It’s bollocks. The way he screws up his face and holds his head in his hands during the judging makes me cringe so bad.
Just grow a fucking backbone Rahul. You know youre are good. Stop your nonsense

Nenic · 26/09/2018 18:03

I didn’t watch it when it was on bbc as I can’t stand Mel and Sue. Love it now. I think people refusing to watch it on ch4 is down to snobbery even though it’s basically the same just different presenters.

MistressDeeCee · 26/09/2018 18:04

Spot on OP you'd make a great TV critic 😁

I abandoned watching last month, mostly for the reasons you outlined

formerbabe · 26/09/2018 18:05

I've pretty much given up on it too.

scottishlovely · 26/09/2018 18:06

I didn't want to watch it when it moved to Channel 4, as I thought they would have ruined it, and though I love Noel in other stuff, I had no idea how he was going fit in to GBBO.
Then I gave in and started to watch it, and I love it! Prue and Mary, pah, can't tell the difference, apart from Prue wears brilliant jewellery. And Noel is INSPIRED!!! He's so gentle and whimsical, absolutely adorable to the contestants. And very very funny. The contestants are all fine, usual mix that you see on the GBBO (and there is always one that is amazing but absolutely cannot see it themselves). It makes me so happy!!!

WheresMyAlex · 26/09/2018 18:08

@auntBeastie are you a murderino?
